BATHING TRUNK Filed Feb. 20, 1940 nas (4 f .g I I KM INVEN-ron Anreize 31km: Pescara Patented Dec. l5, 1942 linneo srarss- Aram" OFFICE BATHING TRUNK Aurelio Pateras Pescara, Genoa, Italy; vested in the Alien Property Custodian Application February 20,
' 1 Claim.I (Cl. 2-67) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a bathing trunk.
The invention has for an object the construction of a pair of bathing trunks which is characterized by a knitted material body having a front section and a rear section joined Iat their bottom areas with a crotch section defining openings for the legs, and a novel arrangement for securing Vtogether the sides of the front and rear sections.
More specically, the invention contemplates the use of slide fasteners extending from the leg openings to the top edge of the body for joining together the sides of the front and rear sections.
Still further the invention contemplates a ,A novel means for encasing the slide fasteners in' Another object of the invention resides in am novel arrangement of a belt for the bathing trunks, and cooperative means on the belt and the slides of the slide fasteners to lock the fasteners closed. v Y
For further comprehension of the invention,
and of the objects Iand advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:

, Fig. 9 -is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 9 9 of Fig. 5.
The bathing trunks, according to -this invention, includes a knitted body having a front section IIJ and a rear section II joined at their bottom areas Wi-th a crotch section I2 defining openings I3 for the legs. Heavy rib elastic belting material Ill extends along the top portions of the front and rear sections Ill and II respectively. Slide fasteners I5 extend from the legv openings I3 to the top edge of the body and join together the sides of the front and rear sections, IB and I I respectively,
A means is provided for encasing 'the slide fasteners i5. This mea-ns includes a strip of material IS for each slide fastener extending across the inner face of the fasteners and secured along the side by stitches Il to one of the sections of the body of the bathing trunks.
Each slide fastener I5 comprises a pair of adjacent stringers I5a having the usual interengageable hooks. These stringers are secured by stitches I'I to the edge portions of the sections forming the body of the trunks. These stitches I1 are spaced inwards from the edge portions of the body sections so that there are portions of material I6a and I In, respectively, from thefront `and rear sections normally engaging over and covering the front faces of the slide fasteners.
The edge portions of the leg openings I3 are nished by inturned edges I3a formed from the material of the body of the trunks. These edges are secured in inturned positions by lines of stitches I8. The crotch I2 is Vfashioned similar to the conventional crotches of bathing suits, and i-s lset into 4the crotch portion of the body section.
The operation of the bathing trunk is as follows:
In Fig. 1 the trunks are shown as they would appear when Worn. The trunks may be removed by moving the control slides of the slide fasteners downwards to their bottommost positions to open the Stringer Isections form-ing Ithe fasteners. Then the bathing trunks may be pulled 01T, and in developed View appear as shown in Fig. 4I.
In IFigs. 5 to 9, inclusive, a modified form of the invention has been disclosed which distinguishes from the prior form in a novel arrangement for locking the slide fasteners closed, so that they may not be accidentally opened, or playfully opened by mischievous persons. More specifically, a belt 2li of any known construction is associated with the waist portion of the bathing trunks by engaging it through loops 2l mounted on the material of the belt of the body portion of the trunks. These loops 2| are so fashioned that the top edge of the belt 20 projects above the top edge of the belting materi-al I4 as clearly illustrated, for example, in Figs. 6 and '1.
At the sides, the belt 20 is provided with pockets mounted on the inner face of the belt and having their mouths at the bottom. Specically, each pocket comprises a piece of cloth material 22 which is secured upon the belt 20 by lines of stitches 23 extended along the sides and top edge of the material 22. Within these pockets there are several groups of fastening elements 25, preferably of the come-apart type such as snap fasteners. The control slide of each slide fastener I5 is provided with a handle 26. Each handle has an opening 26a (see Figs. 7 and 8)-. Any cooperative pair of the snap fasteners 25 may be interengaged with each other through the opening 26a to hold the control handle 26 of the slide fastener in its raised position. Thus the slide fastener is held against being accidentally or playfully pulled open.
When the belt 20 is engaged on persons having different Waist dimensions, Adifferent ones of .the fastening elements 25 will be located at the sides in positions convenient for engagement with the control slides 26 of the slide fasteners.
The body of the bathing trunks in this form of the invention is provided with an athletic supporter 21 which is in the form of a strip of material extended along the center of the front section ,Ill of the body material. This supporter 27 is secured in position by lines of stitches 28. The leg openings I3 in this form of the invention are provided with elastic tape 29 so as to cause the material of the body of the trunks adjacent the openings to better engage the legs.
The operation of this form of the invention is as follows:
The bathing trunks may be removed by forcing ones finger upwards behind the belt 20 at the side areas so as to pull apart the snap fasteners 25. Then the control handle 26 of the control slide may be grasped and pulled downwards to open the slide fasteners. In other respects this form of the invention is similar to the previous form.
The leg openings may be finished in any sultable manner and provided with elastic material to closely lit the wearers legs.
The slide fasteners may also be so constructed, to close with a. downward pull. In that event, pockets may be provided near the edge portion of the leg openings I3,'to accommodate the handle of the control slide and to secure the same in locking position.
It is to be understood that the slide fastners may be covered both at the inner and the outer sides. At the inner side, the cover will prevent the metallic members from coming in contact with the body of the wearer and the cover at the outer side of the slide fasteners will prevent the sun rays from heating the metallic members, therefore the wearer's body will not be unduly heated from the suns rays.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modications coming within the scope ofthe invention as defined in the appended claim.A
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
A bathing trunk, comprising a knitted material body having a front section and a rear section joined at their bottom areas with a crotch section defining openings for the legs, heavy rib elastic belt material extending along the top portions of said front and rear sections, slide fasteners extending from said leg openings to the top edge of said body and joining together the sides of said front and rear sections, means for encasing said slide fasteners, and a belt for said body, and cooperative means on said belt for holding the slidesof said slide fasteners to lock the fasteners closed, comprising sheet material mounted upon the sides of said belt forming pockets with opening bottom mouths, and said slide fasteners having slide controls with handles engageable into said pockets, and fastening means within said pockets cooperative with said handles to hold said handles therein.
