Description
l'NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN L. OASE, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
IM PROVEM ENT IN FENuC'E-POSTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,378, dated J une 10, 1879; application iiled April 16, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN L. OASE, of Denver eity,Golorado, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fence-Posts; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 represents a fence-post with my improvements attached. Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional vieWs of the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in posts suitable to be used for fences7 gates. telegraph-wires, and other similar purposes; and it consists in a molded block of artificial stone as a base, with a longitudinal groove for the reception of the post proper, and in other details, Which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the exact manner in which I have carn ried it out.
In the drawings, A represents ablock of artiticial stone molded with the longitudinal groove a, extending about half of its length, and with suitable metal rods, al al, passing ,through it to strengthen the composition, and
also with a number of rods or bars, a2 a2, eX- tending across the opening at the side of the post, as shown in the drawings, bent at both ends and fastened within the block to the rods lirst mentioned. These bars are to prevent the block from cracking and hold the post proper in position.
A11 inclined groove or gutter, a3, is molded in the bottom of the groove a, (see Fig. 2,) for the purpose of alfording a means of escape for water which might get into the groove, and thus protect the post proper against decay from dampness.
On putting the base-block into the ground the groove a should be left slightly above the surface of the ground, to afford good drainage.
The post proper may be made of woodV or other suitable material, and is to be inserted in groove a and within the transverse bars a2, and, not being in contact with the damp earth, is protected against rot. It can easily be replaced by another when desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The post constructed as described, and consistin g of the block or base A, provided with a longitudinal groove, a, having the transverse groove or gutter a3, longitudinal rods al, and the bars a? a2, iu combination with the post proper, substantially as described.
EDWIN LUMAN oAsE.
