PORTABLE FENCE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Pat-ent No. 381,306, dated April 17, 1888.

Be it known that I, ALBERT WHEAT, of Reading, inthe county of Schuyler and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Portable Fence, of which the'following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to an improvement in fences, and has for its object to provide a portable fence which may be built in. sections, which will' be rmly supported, and which obviates the employment of posts.

The invention consists in afence constructed and arranged as hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this'speciication, in which similar iigures of reference indicate correponding parts in both views. y

Figure 1 is a perspective view representing a portion of a fence constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is an end view showingthe means forsupportingandstrengthening the fence. 4,

In carrying out this invention the fence is constructed in sections, as indicated by 1 2 3 in Fig. 1. In constructing a' section two or more posts, 4, are provided, secured to hori zontalrails 5. In lieu of using posts, each section is braced by means of braces 6, which rest i`n an inclined position against the section of fence just described, tilted so as to form a V with the inclined braces 6. 1

In order to brace and strengthen the fence and hold it securely in position, the inclined braces 6 and the posts 4 are provided with staples 7, which clamp a wire, 8, passing over theposts4 and braces 6, and secured at the ends to apeg or pin, 9, or other suitable retaining device driveninto the ground, the pegs or pins also serving as support-s and braces against which the ends of the fencesect-ions and inclined braces rest. This construction, which Vvirtually acts as a brace, holds the fence securel y in position against action ofthe elements or any other` force, and by reason of dispensing with posts, and not being located in the ground, the fence will not get out of plumb, the only part liable to be affected by moisture and becoming. rotten and weak being the pegs 9, which may be easily replaced from time'to 5o time.

The fence'constructed as above describedv can be made of any number of sections 1, 2, 3, Src., and can be easily taken up and removed and located in another position. 55

While I have described a particular means for trussing or bracing the fence, I do not intend to confine myself thereto, as other material thanwire may be nsedto brace the section, y such as transverse bindingstrips secured 6o thereto by other means than the staples 7, the lower ends of the binding-strips being secured to supports or braces locatedin the ground.
