B. WHEELER, Jr.
FENCE POST.
Patented Oct. 13, 1885.
WITNESSES ATTORNEYS.
N4 PETERS. Phcto-Lillwgnphlr. Washington. nfc.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN WHEELER, JR, OF ZANESVILLE, OHIO.
FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.328,264, dated October 13, 1885.
Application filed April 21, 1885.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN WHEELER, Jr., of Zanesville, Muskingum county, Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Fence- Post, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved fence-post which is strong and durable and cannot corrode.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fence constructed with my improved fence post. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the post. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of a modification of the same. Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line :0 00, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is asectional plan view of the same on the line y 3 Fig. 2.
The fence-postA is made of cement or other artificial-stone composition, formed around a square or other core, B, of wood or metal, eX- tending to within short distances from the ends of the post or through the same.
In the back of the post one or more pockets,
Serial No. 162,935. (No model.)
C, or mortises are formed for receiving the ends of rails D, which abut in the said pockets.
The post is also provided with one or more transverse grooves, E, in the front for receiving the fence-wires F, which are held on the posts by wires G, passed around the post and having their ends twisted around the wires F.
The post may be made square, polygonal, or round in cross-section, as may be desired.
The core A prevents the stone from being broken by a blow or a transverse strain, and also prevents its falling to pieces in case it is cracked.
I The core within the post cannot rot or decay, as the slot Ocommunicates therewith and serves as a vent to let out fire-gas, damp, &o., thereby preventing dry-rot.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, a fence-post made of artificial stone in a continuous piece, having a wooden core, transverse grooves for the fence-wires, and a mortise for the abutting ends of fence-rails, one wall of the mortise communicating with the wooden core, substantially as set forth.
BENJAMIN WHEELER, JE.
