Description

June 27, 1939. v P. L. vERNHEs GLOVE Filed Dec. 10, 1938 Patented June 27, 1939 UNITED STTES "ATENT oFFlcE 4 Claims.
My invention particularly relates to a glove and to a method of fabricating the same.
I-Ieretofore, in the glove industry, it has been customary, when making ladies gauntlet gloves,
for example, to provide a glove blank formed from a sheet of flexible material, such as leather, which comprises portions forming a covering for the hand including the back and front of the fingers and the back and front of the gauntlet portion 10 of the glove, and to overfold the blank along a line extending longitudinally thereof and substantially centrally of the blank. The edges of the blank, therefore, lie in superposed positions and form a side edge of the glove. In finishing 15 the glove, the usual thumb piece is sewn in the thumb opening provided therefor, fourchettes are sewn between the front and back finger-forming portions, and the glove, throughout the entire length thereof, is sewn along its side to fasten 20 the superposed edges of the blank together. In making a gauntlet glovein this manner, the edge of the glove lying along the line upon which the blank is folded must necessarily be straight and, therefore, it has been necessary to produce the 25 flare in the gauntlet by flaring the edges of the blank. Hence, the flare of the gauntlet lies wholly on one side of the finished glove thereby rendering it asymmetrical. Furthermore, the appearance of the side stitching or seam is, generally 30 speaking, undesirable.
It is, therefore, a primary object of my invention to provide a glove comprising integral finger, hand and gauntlet portions which is symmetrical in form and which, additionally, is of 35 such pattern that it provides a better fit, particularly about the wrist, than gloves formed in the customary manner above set forth. Another object resides in providing a gauntlet glove formed from a blank which is so arranged that 40 the glove may be completely sewn without any stitching or seam extending along either side thereof. Another object lies in providing a glove of the foregoing character wherein the blank employed in forming the same is so shaped that 45 substantially no greater waste occurs when a plurality of blanks are cut from a trank of material than is experienced in cutting glove blanks of the character heretofore employed.
A further object resides in the novel method of fabricating gloves of the character herein contemplated; and, with the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention includes the novel constructions and arrangements of parts and 55 the steps in the method of fabricating gloves,
described below and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Fig. l is a plan View of a preferred form of glove blank;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the back of a finished glove formed from the blank of Fig. l; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken through the glove of Fig. 2 in about the plane 3-3 thereof.
In the drawing, I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention wherein I indicates generally the glove blank formed of suitable, flexible material. The central portion of the blank l comprises the finger portions 2, 3, 4 and 5 which are, adapted to form the fronts of the glove fingers. Contiguous to the finger portion 2 is a finger portion 5, substantially conforming to portion 2, and. adjacent said portion 6 is a finger portion 1 which substantially conforms to the finger portion 3. The finger portions 6 and 1 are adapted to be overfolded along the dot-dash line 8 upon the finger portions 2 and 3, respectively, whereby to form the fronts and backs of the glove fingers. Likewise, a finger portion 9, substantially conforming to finger portion 5, lies contiguous thereto and a finger portion H), which conforms to finger portion 4, lies adjacent the portion 9. Portions 9 and I0 are adapted to be overfolded about the dot-dash line ll upon the portions 5 and 4 respectively, to form the backs for said finger portions. As illustrated, the blank is slitted, of course, to the correct depth between adjacent finger portions except between the portions 2 and 6 and 5 and 9, respectively, which serve to form the fronts and backs of the first and little fingers. .35
Beneath the finger-forming portions above described and intermediate the length of the blank is a central portion l2 which lies between the fold lines 8 and II and is provided with the usual opening l3 for a thumb piece, the portion i2 forming a covering for the palm of the hand. Contiguous to and along both sides of the portion I2 extend side portions l4 and [5 which comprise the finger-forming. portions for the back of the glove and which are adapted to be folded over upon the portion l2 to form the covering for the back of the hand. The free edges of the lateral portions I4 and I5 preferably extend substantially in parallel relationship and, from the points l6 and H, the sides of the blank preferably diverge to provide the gauntlet forming portion of the glove blank. For purposes of illustration, the edges of the flares so formed on each sideof the lower central portion of the blank are shown as generally sinusoidal or scalloped for decorative purposes.
At the points l6 and I1, the lateral, side portions of the glove blank are slitted as indicated at l8 and H), the slits extending approximately to the lines of fold 8 and H and divide the lateral, side portions of the glove blank into the upper, side portions l4 and I5, above described, and the lower, side portions 20 and 2|. The portions 20 and 2! are adapted to be overfolded, about the dot-dash lines 22 and 23, respectively, and upon the lower central portion 24 of the blank, which forms the gauntlet covering for the front of the arm and wrist while the portions 28 and 2| are adapted, in part, to form the gauntlet covering for the back of the wrist and arm.
In forming the glove, the lateral portions l4 and E5 of the blank are folded over about the lines of fold 3 and II with their free edges in abutting or slightly overfolded relationship. The lateral, side portionslfl and 2! of the gauntlet forming portion of the blank are also folded over and, in order to form a flaring, symmetrical gauntlet, the slits l8 and iii are opened while maintaining the respective lateral, side portions of the blank, which lie on opposite sides of said slits, substantially in the same plane. In other words, the slits l8 and I9 permit the portions 25 and 2| to be overfolded along lines extending at an angle to the lines of fold 8 and I I or along the lines of fold 22 and 23 whereby, in part, to form the gauntlet, indicated generally at 25 in Fig. 2, which is flared outwardly from both sides of the glove and is symmetrical.
In overfolding the lateral, side portions of the glove blank in the foregoing manner, the sides of the slits l8 and i9 are spread apart thereby forming substantially V-shaped, oppositely disposed notches. A gore element 23 is sewn within the opening formed between the V-shaped notches and the gore preferably extends between and is stitched to the edges of the overfolded portions 20 and 2|, as illustrated. The stitching 21 which fastens the gore element in position may be of a decorative nature.
The meeting edges of the lateral portions I4 and i5 are also sewn together as indicated at 28 and the stitching employed in so doing, as in the case of stitching 21, may also be of a decorative nature and may resemble the stitching employed in forming the decorative ribs 29 on the back of the glove.
Of course, in completing the glove, fourchettes are stitched between the finger-forming portions in the ordinary manner and the usual thumb piece is sewn in the thumb opening l3 therefor.
It will be observed that the integral blank, above described, is of a width substantially suincient to extend around the hand and the base of the wrist and of a length sufficient to form the desired glove and that the overfolded, lateral side portions are so arranged that the blank, except for sewing in the gore, fourchettes and thumb member, need be sewn only between the base of the wrist to the bottom of the fingerforming portions of the blank. In other words, it is only necessary to stitch along the meeting edges between the points l5 and ll which, when the blank is folded are substantially coincident, and the bottom. of the slit between the middle and third fingers and, of course, this stitching may at the same time serve to decorate the back of the glove. Although I have shown the preferred arrangement wherein the line of stitching, which serves to unite the lateral, side portions forming a covering for the back of the hand, as extending longitudinally of the glove and generally parallel to the sides thereof, I may, of course, so form the blank that said line of stitching will extend from. adjacent the V-shaped notches and gore, as illustrated, to a point between any two adjacent finger-forming portions of the glove.
It will be noted that by forming a glove in the foregoing manner, the slits permit the gauntlet portion thereof to be of symmetrical form because the gauntlet may be made to flare outwardly from each side of the glove substantially to the same degree. This not only produces a pleasing and desirable effect but, by so forming the glove,
plurality of blanks of the character herein described from a sheet or trank of material.
While I have described my invention in its preferred embodiment, it is to be understood that the words which I have used are words of description rather than of limitation. Hence, changes :1
within the purview of the appended claims may be made without departing from the true scope and spirit of my invention in its broader aspects.
What I claim is:
l. A glove comprising a blank of flexible material having centrally disposed portions forming a covering for the palm of the hand, the front of the fingers and the front of the wrist, and side portions overfolded said central portions and forming a covering for the backs of the fingers and the back of the hand; said side portions being provided near the wrist with slits extending inwardly from the edges thereof substantially to the lines of fold, and having the portions of said blank adjacent said slits spread apart; and a gore secured between the edges of said slits and the edges of said side portions to form a flaring gauntlet for said glove.
2. A glove comprising an integral blank of flexible material forming a covering for the front and back of the fingers, the palm and back of the hand and the front and sides of the wrist; said blank having the edges thereof stitched together along the back of said glove from the base of the fingers to the base of the wrist; said edges being provided with inwardly extending slits in the vicinity of the wrist and the portions of said blank at either side of said slits being spread apart to form V-shaped notches in said edges; and a gore element stitched to said blank along said edges and the edges of said notches to form a flared gauntlet on said glove.
3. Those steps in the method of forming a flared gauntlet on a glove which comprise forming a blank of flexible material of a width substantially sufficient to extend around the hand and the base of the wrist, and of a length sufficient to form said glove, slitting said blank inwardly from the opposite edges thereof substantially at the base of the wrist, opening said slits by bending the material of said blank while maintaining the portions thereof at either side of said slits in substantially the same plane, and securing a gore element in position between said edges and the edges of said opened slits.
being provided with oppositely disposed V-shaped notches formed by slitting said edge portions and bending the material of said blank in the plane thereof to open said slits and separate the free 7 edges of said blank; and a gore interposed between and stitched to said edges of said blank and having portions extending into said notches.
