IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED DIVIDERS, KNIFE, AND SCREW-DRIVER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 215,282, dated May 13, 1879 application filed January 28, 1879.
use of mechanics, inasmuch as it comprises several very useful and necessary tools, all of which are connected together bya single pin in a manner which will readily admiti of an adjustment whereby any one of the many devices may be brought into position for actual use.
On the drawings, Figures -1 and 2 represent the invention in different positions. Fig. 3 is a view of the inner side of the solid leg of the dividers; Fig. 4, the locking side of the knife and screw-driver and Fig. 5, the pin and nut whereby the several parts are held together.
The tools comprised in this device are a screw-driver, a, knife b, square 0, rule 0?, and a pair of dividers, E. One leg, f, of the latter is slotted, as at g, in order that it may be adjusted for wheelwright as well as ordinary uses. The nut H is provided with a short stem, i, through which a hole is bored and tapped to receive the threaded stem ofa thumb-screw, K. The stem 2' is turned so as to neatly fit in eyes :10 a" that are drilled in the solid leg h and in the knife and screw-driver portion L, the said pieces h L being held thereon, in either a parallel or cross position, by means of the ridges or keys m m and grooves n n, the for mer constructed on the knife and screw-driver portion, and the latter on the inner side of the solid leg, as shown.
A certain portion of the nut-stem z'is out on opposite sides, so as to produce flat surfaces,
*upon which is fitted thelegf, the slotin which permits of its being shortened, whenever desired.
The solid leg h of the dividers is stamped with a scale or rule, as at d, and the square is formed by one edge of the aforesaid leg and the back of the knife, the latter being secured for the said purpose at right angles to the former, as shown at c, in Fig. 2. y
The different tools are brought into position for use by loosening the thumb-screw until the ridges m m have been raised clear of the grooves in the leg h, when the central section, L, is turned in the desired direction, and the aforesaid screw again tightened.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desre to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with thumb -screw K and nut H, having cylindrical stem 1', provided with a prismatic screw-tapped extension, a blade having grooves n 72, arranged at right angles to each other, another blade, L, having longitudinal ridges m m, and a third blade or leg, f, having longitudinal slot g, the said parts being so constructed and arranged as to serve for a combined knife, screw-driver, square, compass, and wheelwrights compass, all substantially as set forth.
