ment having cam locking means included therein wherein points may be set to dimensions and readily locked in the positions to which they have been set.
In the conventional type of compass and divider points or a point and a pencil or pen are accurately adiusted to a dimension and it is diiiicult to lock the points or the point with the pencil or pen in the adjusted position. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a combination drawing instrument having three members pivotally mounted on a common pin with points adjustably mounted in two of the members and with a bar having a drawing pen on one end and a pencil point on the other removably mounted on the third member, and with the members provided with hubs having cam surfaces positioned to lock two of the members as a third member is moved upwardly.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide, in a combination drawing instrument having three legs, means for locking two of the legs by a third leg.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combination drawing instrument that may readily be converted from a pencil compass to a compass having a pen therein whereby lines described by the pencil may be inked with the same instrument.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combination drawing instrument having divider and pen and pencil compass elements with locking means incorporated in the elements, which is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a center leg having a point adjustably mounted in one end with a hub having cam surfaces on the ends thereof positioned on the opposite end, a coacting leg also having a point adjustably mounted in one end and having a hub with a cam shaped inner sur- The invention also includes a. drawing instruface on the other positioned to coact with the cam surface on one side of the hub of the center leg, and a compass leg having pen and pencil points on opposite ends of a bar carried thereby also having a cam surface on a hubat the upper end positioned to coact with the cam surface of the hub of the center leg, and a pin pivotallyl retaining the legs in assembled relation.
vOther features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken,
in connection with the drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of the combination instrument with part of one of the legs thereof broken away showing the adjustable mounting of a point in the end thereof.
Figure 2y is a similar elevational View showing thedivider points extended for use with the pen and pencil mounting bar removed.
Figure 3 is a detail illustrating an elevational.
t view of the pen and pencil point mounting bar.
Figure 4 is a detail on an enlarged scale showing the mounting of the pen nibs in the end of.
the bar.
Figure 7 isa cross section taken on lline I-I of Figure 3 showing the collar for securing the` pencil point in the end of the pen and pencil mounting bar. y
Figure 8 is a detail showing an exploded viewV illustrating the hub at the upper end of the leg and showing the hub separated.
Figure 9 is a detail illustrating a section-` through the hub of the legs showing the pin ex-l tended through the hub and showing the partsin the free position.
Figure 10 is `a 'similar view showing the side leg moved upwardly to the locking position.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the combination drawing instrument of this invention includes a center leg I0, a coacting divider leg II, a compass leg I2, a pin I3 for pivotally connecting the legs `and a mounting bar I4 having a pen I5 on one end and a pencil point I6 clamped in the opposite end.
The center or rst leg Il) is formed as illus;
trated in Figures 1 and 8 with a point I'I adjustably secured in a socket I8 by a set screw I9..
Iand with a hub 20 on the upper end, the ends of which are provided with cam surfaces 2| and 22. The hub 20 may also be provided with a knob 23 by `which vthe, instrumentmaybe held in use, and the intermediate part thereof is provided With 'an opening 24 through which the pin I3 extends, as shown in Figure 9.
The divider leg II is provided with =a similar socket 25 in the outer end inywhigha poinug is adjustably held by la set screw 21, and the opposite end is provided with' ahubn28-having a cam 'surface 29 thereon havin-ga peri-t ing 30 extended therethrough for receiving the' pin I3. The compass leg I2 is also provided with a hub, as indicated by the numferalmSI andA thehinner surface of this hub is provided with a cani surface 32 and an opening 33 extends through the hub for receiving the pin I3.
