Description

, screw-driver projecting.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT P. PEARSON, OE PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR 'IO CHARLES HASSENEORDER, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINATION-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 285,304, dated September 18, 1883.
` Application filed May '1, 1883. (No modelj) I .To a/ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT P. PEARsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inOombination- ,Iools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view with screw-drivingV bit retracted. Fig. 2 is a side view with Figi?) is a side view of the bit. Fig. 4. is a side view of the tool with boring-bit projecting. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the tool.
My invention has for its obj ect to provide a combination-tool which shall comprise the following parts: a screw-driver, gimlet, socketwrench, and rule.
My invention consists in the peculiar construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully set forth, comprising a stock or handle having a longitudinal bore or passage which receives a bit, one end of which is formed as a screw-driver blade, the other as a gimlet, said handle having also a longitudinal slotfor the passage of an adjusting-screw which holds the bit, and having also wrenchsockets at each end and a straight rib or edge with rule-marks on one of its sides.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,A indicates the stock or handle, which is formed with enlargements or heads a a at each end. In these heads are angular openings or recesses B B', respectively, of different sizes, adapting the device for use as awrench. rIhe stock A has a longitudinal bore or orifice, a?,
vin which is located a bit, C, one end of which is shaped to form ascrew-driver blade, D, the
other end being a gimlet, E. rlhis bit may be freely moved lengthwise of the stock and secured in any desired position therein by means of a set-screw, F, which passes down through a longitudinal slot, a3, in one side of the stock and enters a central opening, c, in said bit.
Said bit is of the same or may be of less length than the stock, so that it may be wholly withdrawn within the latter, as it is when the setscrew occupies a position midway between both ends of said stock. To project the screwdriver or the gimlet the set -screw is first loosened, then moved in the direction necessary to project the desired end of the bit, and then turned to fasten the latter. OneV side of the stock is formed with a rib, G, which has a straight edge with divisional marks g g, adapting the device for use as a rule or measure.
What I claim asmy invention is as follows:
l. The stock A, having a longitudinal bore or opening, a2, made through one end for the reception of a bit, C, and a longitudinal slot, ai, for the passage of a set-screw, F, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with stock A, having bore a2 made through one end, and slot a3, of bit C, having opening c, and set-screw F, substantially as shown and described.
3. The bit C,- havng a screw-driver blade at one end and gimlet at the other, substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination, with stock A, of sliding bit C, having a screw-driver at one end and gimlet at the other, and set-screw F, whereby said bit may be fastened with both ends withdrawn within or with either end projected from said stock, substantially as shown and described.
5. The stock A, having an open-ended bore for the reception of a sliding bit, and having enlarged ends a c,with wrench-sockets there in, substantially as shown and described.
6. The combination-tool herein described, comprising a screw-driver, gimlet, wrench, and rule, the several parts being constructed and combined substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing Ihave hereunto set my hand this 3d day of May, 1883.
ROBERT P. PEARSON.
