UNITED .STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
HENRY A. THOMPSON, OF FARMINGTON, MAINE.
IMPROVEMEN' IN HEEL-STIFFENERS FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 215,184, dated May 6, 1879; application led March 21, 1879.
To all whom t may concer/n:
Be it known that I, HENRY A. THOMPSON, of Farmington, in the county of Franklin and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heel Stil'eners for Shoes, rSte.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art. to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference heilig had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation, showing my improved metallic counter in position un- Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the counter outside the upper; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the counter detached.
This invention has relation to that class of metallic counters for boots and shoes in which the counter itself is so constructed that it may readily be secured Vinside or outside the upper without the intervention of tack, screw, or sewing, whereby the leathermay be weakened; and to that end it consists of certain improvements in the construction of the same, hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings accompanying this invention similar letters of reference indicate like parts of the invention.
A is the upper, and B the insole, of any ordinary boot or shoe. The metallic counter O has its flange c of the usual height; and its y base D extends inward about half an inch, the end being bent back upon itselt'in such a manner as will form a projection extending entirely around the hase D, thus forming in a simple and effective manner a ready means of securely attaching the counter to the inside or outside of the boot or shoe without perforating or punctu ring, and thereby weakening, the leather.
I am aware that metallic counters for boots and shoes have been used, and that they have been applied both to the inside and outside of them, and such l do not desire to broadly claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is the following:
As an improved article of manufacture, a metallic counter for boots and shoes consisting, essentially, of the counter G, having the flanges c and base D, the inner edge of which is bent hack upon itself in such a manner as to form a continuous projection or ledge, E, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereby affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY A. THOMPSON.
Witnesses:
DAVID H. CHANDLER, B. A. HIGGINS.
