Description

March 7, 1939; s. A. HARRISON BUTTON FASTENING MEANS Filed Oct. 15, 1937 fivelmr: W
Patented Mar. 7, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 4 Claims.
This invention has to do with fasteners for securing buttons or button-molds having metal shanks, to a garment and is adapted particularly for securing such buttons or button-molds to a garment on which button backers of the type described in my Patent No. 2,100,103, Nov. 23, 1937, are used.
Buttons for fur garments are usually secured to such garments by means of a piece of tape threaded through the eye of the shank and having the ends of said tape sewed to the under side of the garment. Buttons thus secured to a garment soon come off due to the breaking of the tape which is rapidly worn through by the metal shank of the button.
Fur buttons are usually made by covering ordinary button-molds with fur and said buttons are also attached to a garment by means of tape. Various methods are employed to secure the tape to the button-mold without the use of a shank but such methods are not satisfactory, as a rule, for'reasons well known in the art. And the securing of tape to a garment, particularly a fur garment, is difiicult and requires considerable time and effort.
It is therefore the object of my invention to provide button fastening means whereby a button or a button-mold having a metal shank may be quickly and easily attached to a garment and which will secure the button for substantially the life of said garment.
Another object of my invention is to provide button fastening means of the above character whereby buttons may be quickly and easily removed from the garment should replacement thereof be required for any reason such as breakage or injury thereto.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure l is a front view of a portion of a fur garment with a button-mold, having a metal shank, secured thereto.
Figure 2 is a view of the underside of a portion of a fur garment with a button backer sewed thereto and showing a fastener in place in the eyelets of the button backer and securing a button to the garment.
Figure 3 is a view of the same showing the fastener in position for insertion in the eyelets of the button backer.
Figure 4 is a section of a portion of a fur garment with a button backer secured on the rear side thereof and a button-mold with a metal shank secured by means of the fastener, said section being taken on line 44 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a section of a button-mold having a metal shank taken on line 55 of Figure 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing 5 reference numeral l0 indicates a portion of a fur garment having an opening I l in the leather part 12 thereof. A button backer I3 such as described in my Patent No. 2,100,103, Nov. 23, 1937, is sewed to the under side of the garment 10 over opening H by means of stitches l4. Said backer is provided with a pair of openings I5 reinforced by metal eyelets [6, said openings being spaced slightly apart adjacent the opening II in the garment and on opposite sides 16 thereof.
Figure 4 shows a button or button-mold l'l without a covering, and with a metal shank 18, secured to the garment, the eye 19 of the shank being received in opening ll of the garment be- 20 tween the eyelets I6 where it is received on the central V-shaped portion 20, at the apex thereof, of a fastener 2|, the apex of said V-shaped portion being on the forward side of the backer. The sides 22 of said V-shaped portion extend rearwardly through respective eyelets l0 and have end portions 23 which extend oppositely outward therefrom substantially parallel with the rear of the button backer and along substantially a common axis.
The button-mold illustrated in the drawing is of wood and is uncovered though in the finished form it is covered with fur or other suitable material. The metal shank I8 thereof is secured in the mold by bending over ends 24 into channels provided therefor in the upper surface of the mold. Buttons for garments such as fur coats and the like usually have a metal shank having an eye and such buttons are adapted for attachment to garments with my button fastener.
In attaching a button to the garment the button backer is sewed to the under side of the garment beneath the point of attachment of the button, with the eyelets adjacent the opening H in the garment and on opposite sides thereof. 5 The eye of the button or button-mold shank is inserted in the opening ll between the eyelets of the backer and one end of the fastener is inserted in one of the eyelets 16 of the backer I3 and inserted. in the eye I9 of the shank. The garment may be folded forwardly over the button sufiiciently to permit the inserted end of the fastener to be run through the other eyelet of the button backer. The V-shaped portion of the fastener is held in the position shown in Figure 3 in inserting said fastener through the eyelets l6 and the eye I9 of the shank I8. A slight downward turning or rotation of the fastener is necessary to bring said fastener into the position shown in Figure 4 wherein the button is secured firmly to the garment. Once the fastener is inserted in the eyelets with a button secured thereon said fastener will stay in place and will not work out of the eyelets but said fastener may be removed from said eyelets by reversing the steps employed in inserting same into the eyelets. Removal of the fastener may bev necessary to remove buttons that have been injured or broken.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. In button fastening means, the combination of a garment with an opening for a button shank eye and having a button backer secured to the under side thereof over the opening, said backer being provided with a plurality of reinforced openings adjacent the opening in the garment and at opposite sides thereof, and a button having a shank eye received in the opening in the garment, with a fastener having a V-shaped portion adapted to receive thereon at the apex there of the shank eye of the button, the sides of said V-shaped portion extending rearwardly through respective reinforced openings in the button backer, and end portions extending oppositely of each other along a common axis and substantially parallel to the back of the button backer.
2. In button fastening means, the combination of a garment with an opening for a button shank eye and having a button backer secured to the under side thereof over the opening, said backer being provided with a plurality of eyelets adjacent the opening in the garment and at opposite sides thereof, and a button having a shank with an eye therein, said shank eye being received in the opening in the garment, with a fastener having a V-shaped portion adapted to receive thereon at the apex thereof the shank eye of the button, the sides of said V-shaped portion extending through respective eyelets of the button backer, and end portions extending oppositely outward of each other.
3. In button fastening means the combination of a button backer having a plurality of reinforced openings therein, with a fastener having a V-shaped central portion adapted to receive forwardly of the button backer the eye of a button shank, the sides of said V-shaped portion extending rearwardly through respective openings of the backer, and free end portions on the V- shaped portion extending from the open ends of the said sides outwardly of each other along a common axis and substantially parallel to the back side of the button backer.
4. In button fastening means the combinatio of a button backer having a plurality of openings therein, with a fastener having a V-shaped portion adapted to receive thereon forwardly of the button backer a shank eye of a button, the sides of said V-shaped portion extending rearwardly through respective'openings in the button backer,
each other from the open ends of the sides of the V-shaped portion.
