I TYPEWRITING MACHINE Filed April 20; 1955 INVENTOR BSON 5 WILLIAM A. 00
. TTORNEY Patented Mar. 7, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE TYPEW RITIN G MACHIN E William A. Dobson, Wethersfield, Conn, assignor to Underwood Elliott Fisher Company, New York, N. Y., a corporation of Delaware Application April 20, 1935, Serial No. 17,403
7 Claims.
This invention relates to the feet of a typewriter or like machine and with a foot structure for a portable typewriter deals particularly resting on a baseboard of a carrying case.
An object of the inventionv is to provide an eflicient noise-deadening cush ioning foot, preferably of soft rubber, and which may be easily attached to or removed from the frame of the machine.
Another object is a simple, economical connection for removably attaching the foot to the machine.
board.
To these and other ends t he invention comprises features of construction and combinations of parts within the scope of the following description and the appended claims. In the accompanying drawing:
Figure l is a. perspective ponents of the foot structure.
Figure 2 is a cross section, of Figure 3.
of separated comon the trace 22 Figure 3 is an elevation of the feet as attached to the frame and resting on the baseboard, the
latter and one of the feet being shown in section taken on the trace 33 of Figure 4.
Figure 4 is a side elevation of the typewriter and shows the baseboard and part of the carrying-case cover in section.
A typewriter Ill has a paper-carriage H, with a platen l2.
The machine stands on a baseboard !3 associated with a removable cover Hi, partly shown. A round metal post 24 rises from a metal base-plate 25, which is rigidly connected to the baseboard. Machine f such posts. As the foot 53 i set fit snugly upon 5 pressed down on the post and against the base-plate 25, the rubber is. compressed and therefore tends to make the hole 2| smaller and so to exert strong looking or anti-slipping pressure on the post 2 3.
A square or rectangular rubber foot 33 is fastened to the flange 23 of a skeleton-frame 2!! of the machine.
The molded rubber foot has a shape as shown in full in Figure 1 and sectionally in Figures 2 and 3. The
bottom of this foot is hollowed out to give more elasticity to its bottom flange 34. A round hole fitting over the metal post 23 foot 33. A square flange 35 or socket 2| snugly is provided in this at the top of the foot fits in the square eye-hole 36 on the shank 23 of the skeleton-frame 20.
Two grooves 35 on opposing sides of the flange 35 of the rubber foot 33, allow a metal foot locking piece or fastener 3'! of Ushape, see Figure l, to be passed into the grooves 35* of the flange 35 after the rubber foot 33 or its flange: 35 has been pushed up 5 through the hole 36. In this manner said foot is tightly held to the machine.
A protecting washer 38, with a square hole 39, as shown in Figure l, is laid between the rubber foot and the eye or supporting-flange 23. The 10 washer with its square hole 39 fits over the flange 35 of the rubber foot.
In assembling the foot to the machine, the Washer or can 38 is laid over the flange of rubher. The foot 33 is inserted into the holed sup- 15 porting flange or eye 23 on the machine. The locking-piece 31 is inserted through the grooves of the foot, and both legs of the locking-piece enter the holes 40. The latter are cut in the skeleton-frame of the machine, see Figure l, and. the ends of said legs on 31 may be bent over on the outer side of the skeleton-frame, to hold the rubber feet to the machine.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the invention 25 may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a portable typewriter, the combination with a typewriting machine, of a baseboard, a shank provided upon the frame. of said machine 30 and having an eye, a soft rubber foot having a flange whereby it is buttoned into said eye and having lateral grooves above said eye, said baseboard having a fixed post, said rubber foot having a socket whereby it is removably fitted upon 35 said post and a flat annular shoulder extending beyond said eye beneath the surrounding wall of the shank, and a locking-piece having parts engaging said lateral grooves and overlying the top wall of said shank.
2. In a portable typewriter, the combination with a typewriting machine, of abaseboard, a shank provided upon the frame of said machine and having an eye, a soft rubber foot having a flange whereby it is buttoned into said eye and 45 having lateral grooves above said eye, said baseboard having a fixed post, said rubber foot having a socket whereby it is removably fitted upon said post and a flat annular shoulder extending beyond said eye beneath the surrounding wall of 50 the shank, a metal plate overlying said annular shoulder, and a locking-piece having parts engaging said lateral grooves and overlying the top wall of said shank.
3. In a portable typewriter, the combination 66 with a typewriting machine, of a baseboard, a shank provided upon the'frame of said machine and having an eye, a soft rubber foot having a flange whereby it is buttoned into said eye and having lateral grooves above said eye, said baseboard having a fixed post, said rubber'foot having a socket whereby it is removably fitted upon said post, and a flat annular shoulder extending beyond said eye beneath the surrounding wall of the shank, a metal plate overlying said annular shoulder and a part of the side wall of said foot, and a locking-piece having parts engaging said lateral grooves and overlyingthe top wall of said shank. Y
4. In a portable typewriter, the combination with a typewriting machine, of a baseboard, a shank provided upon the frame of said machine and having an *eye, a soft rubber foot having a flange whereby it is button-ed into said eye and having lateral grooves above said eye, said baseboard having a fixed post, said rubber foot hav- .inga socket whereby it isremovably fitted upon said post and a flat annular shoulder extending beyond said eye beneath the surrounding wall of the shank, and a U-shaped locking-piece having parts engaging said lateral grooves and overlying the top wall of said shank.
5. In a portable typewriter, the combination with a typewriting machine, of a baseboard, a shank provided upon the frame of said machine and having an eye, a soft rubber foot having a flange whereby it is buttoned into said eye and frame and having an eye, a soft rubber foot having a flange whereby it is buttoned into said eye, 7
and having lateral grooves above said eye, said rubber foot having an annular shoulder extending beyond said eye beneath the surrounding wall of the shank, and a locking means having parts engaging said lateral grooves and overlying the top wall of said shank.
'7. In a portable typewriting machine or the like having a frame; a shank provided upon the frame and having an eye, a soft rubber foot having a neck whereby it isbuttoned into said eye, said eye and neck being shaped to key the foot against rotation, said neck having an extension above said shank and said extension being laterally grooved above said eye, said foot having a shoulder at the base of said neck extending beyond said eye beneath the surrounding wall of the shank, and a locking means having parts engaging said grooves and overlying the top wall of said shank.
