This invention relates in general to brushesv and methods of making them and more particularly to so-called full row brushes as contrasted with tufted or knotted brushes. v
Heretofore, f`ull row brushes-have consisted of rows of bristles which have had one end dipped into a plastic composition such as vulcanized rubber and then secured in a metal ferrule or frame by rivets or nails passing through said ends. of the rows of bristles and the ferrule, the ferrule being connected to a wooden head by nails or the like. Another form of full row brush is shown in Patent No. 1,642,974 where the rows of bristles after having been dipped in the plastic composition are clamped in channels in a metal plate which is secured to the head of the brush. 'I'hese known methods and structures are complicated and expensive, requiring complex and expensive apparatus, machines and tools and large amounts of time and labor.
One object of the present invention is to provide a novel and improved full row brush which shall be simple and inexpensive in construction and can be manufactured at low cost.
Another object is to provide such a brush which shall be strong and durable wherein the bristles shall be rmly and directly connected to the back or head of the brush without the necessity for rivets` or the like fastening members or specially formed complex holding plates.
Another object is to provide a .novel and improved method of making a brush of this character, and vparticularly novel and improved method for assembling the rows of bristlesand inserting them into the brush back, whereby a great saving in time and labor over known methods shall be possible.
Other objects are to provide novel and improved means i'or separably connecting a handle to the brush back; to provide a novel and improved structure whereby the brush can be made entirely of metal except the bristles and the handle; and to obtain other advantages and results *5 tion.

Speciiically describing the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the brush includes a` cuplike back A preferably formed of sheet metal and including a bottom I and an upstanding perimetral flange 2 which has an inturned edge 25 3. As shown, the brush back is generally rectangular in plan view and'centrally of 'the back is formed a handle attaching boss 4 which has a handle-receiving opening 5. Obviously the back may be of other shapes, for example, round or 30 oval. f
In making the brush, an interiorly screwthreaded socket shell 6 having an outturned perimetral flange 'i-is set on the inside of the bottom I of the back Vwith the ilange resting on the inside of the boss 4 and the socket aligned with the opening 5 and a liquid plastic composition, -for example liquid rubber which may be hardened upon vulcanization, is placed inthe back A as shown in Figure 2. Rows of bristles 9 are ar- 40 ranged within an annular ferrule I0 with'one or more spacers II, depending upon the type of brush, extending longitudinally of the ferrule and between the rows of bristles and inwardly of the l ends of the bristles. 'I'he ferule is preferably of 45 approximately the same size as the open side of the back, and certain rows of bristles are disposed between the ferrule and the next adjacent spacers ii, while other'rows are disposed between the spacers a's shown in Figure 1. .Preferably the 50 spacers are atleast partially insertedl within the ferrule so as to rmly clamp the rows of bristles in position. If desired, the ends of the bristles the completed 5 may be dipped in liquid composition althoughl this is not necessary. After the bristles and spacers have been so arranged in the ierrule the ferrule is set upon the edge of the back and the bristles and spacers are forced into the back as by means of a-knife blade or tool C inserted between the bristles and pressed against the tops of the spacers. 'I'he spacers and the ends of the bristles are thus embedded in the composition 8, the spacers squeezing the composition around the bristles. Preferably the spacers II are channelshaped with their bases I2 adjacent the bottom of the brush back and openings I3 are formed in the bases of the spacers to permit the liquid composition to ow into the channels as shown in Figure 2.,; Thereafter, the plastic composition may be vulcanized or hardened in any known manner. The ferrule I0 may be slipped from the 'opposite ends of the bristles any time after the bristles and spacers have been inserted into the composition.
When the plastic composition has become hardened the bristles and spacers are firmly embedded in the composition, and the block of composition is firmly held in the back by the inturned flange 3 in addition to the adhesive contact of the composition with the metal of the back. Also, the handle socket 6 is firmly secured in the back so that a handle D having a screw-threaded portion E corresponding to the socket B may be threaded into the socket. Preferably the handle has a shoulder F at the inner end of the threaded' portion E to abut the outside of the bottom I of the back, whereby said bottom is clamped between the shoulder and the socket shell. With this construction, the handle, bottom of the back, the hardened composition ill and the socket shell mutually reenforce each other to prevent bending of said bottom and cracking f the hardened composition.
A modification of the handle socket is shown in Figures '1 and 8 where the socket is formed by inserting a screw threaded mold plug I4 through the opening 5 in the back prior to placing of the plastic composition into the back, so that after hardening of the composition the mold block may' be removed and leave a, screw threaded socket I5 in the composition to receive the screw threaded handle I6. Preferably the mold block would be scaped before insertion into the composition so as to facilitate removal of the block after the compositionhas hardened. A further modication is shown in Figure l0 where the handle socket is shown in the form of a wooden bushing Il inserted into the back and the composition like the socket E and having a screw threaded opening iB to receive the handle.
Et is desirable that the spacers II and back A be so proportioned in size that the bristles are firmly clamped between adjacent spacers and between the outer spacers and the flange 2 of the back to supplement thecomposition 8 in binding the bristles and spacers in the back. Furthermore, it is an important feature of the invention that the spacers are embedded in the composition so asto provide substantial reenforcement for the composition block and the back of the brush when the composition has hardened.

A brush comprising a cup-like metal back having a bottom and an upstanding perimetral flange, said bottom having a handle receiving opening, a sheet metal interiorly threaded socket shell having` an outturned perimetral flange mounted on the inside of said back with its socket registering with said opening, bristles, and a hardened plastic composition in said back embedding said bristles and said socket shell. l
4. A brush comprising a cup-like back having a bottom and an upstanding perimetral flange with an inturned edge, a plastic composition in the back, and a plurality of rows of bristles and spacers embedded in -said composition, said spacers having openings through which the composition extends whereby the spacers are held in position in the back solely by said plastic composition, certain of said rows of bristles having their ends arranged between adjacent spacers while other rows are arranged between certain spacers and the ange of the back.
