I which ma therefore be sold so cheaply that all can we afford to throw it away after one use. A further objectIis to provide a construction embodying a minimum number of parts which may be readily stamped out or otherwise cheaply formed, 'and may then be quickly and automatically assembled by simple machinery with the necessary bristles in place and firmly held by such assembly. With the above and other ends in view, the invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims, refer ence being had to the accompanying drawing, in whichigure 1 is a side elevation of a brush embodying the invention;
Fi 2 is an end view of the head end of said rush; Fig. 3 isa top plan view of Figure 1; Fig. 4 is a detail of the top or cap member of the brush showing the same partly in lon itudinal section;
ig. 5 is a top plan view ofthe bottom or l base member;
Fig. 6 is a detail of the base member, showing the same partly in edge elevation and partly in longitudinal section;
Fig. 7 is an enlarged view of the head end of the brush, showmg the same partly in eleation and Ypartly in longitudinal section; an
Fizg. 8 is a transverse section through Figure As the main object of the present invention is to form a tooth brush of the fewest number of parts for the purpose of cheapness of construction, and at the Sametime provide 'a construction in which the bristles" are firmvly held, the head portion A and handle portion B, comprise but two parts, preferably thin stampin s formed of a paper or other easily molde or stamped composition, the upper or cap member 1 and the bottom or base member 2 being both stamped or pressed out from a thin sheet of material, and these two members then placed face to face, onel upon the other, and then glued or otherwise firmly united throu hout their contacting surfaces to form the head A for holdin the bristle tufts 3 and the handle portion of the brush.
In order that the bristle tufts may be firmly held in the brush head, the base member'l at its head end, is formed with two parallel longitudinally extending rows lof holes 4, the holes in one row being directly opposite the holes in the other row, and where each hole opens through the upper side ofthe basel member, it is cut laterally to form a groove 5 leading from the holes in one 4row toward the holes in the opposite row, to,` provide a `curved seat for the connecting portions 6 of the bristles forming two tufts and which connecting portions extend across from one row 4. of holes to the other row with the free ends of the bristles projecting through these openings and forming the two rows of tufts 3.
The ase member 2 isa thin flat stamping having the proper outline to conform to the shape of the head portion A and to form the handle ortion B, andthe cam member 1 is also a t 'n flat stamping having an outline corresponding to that of the base member, but
. in the head portion of this cap, a recess or depression 7 is formed by pressing the'central portion of the head of said cap member,'up wardly, forming a recess in its lower side to receive and fit closely over the loop portions 6 of the bristle tufts, and a smooth rounded] 'upper side over these loops the marginal rounded upper surface, the cap covering and snugly inclosing the'loops 6 of the bristles,
securely A holding the tufts 'in place and strengthening both head and handle portions -of the brush when glued or otherwise 'rmly secured inplace'upon the base. .The cement, glue, or other material used to secure the cap upon the base, may also fill the recess 7 Y and thus securely hold the loops 6 ofthe. bristles marginal portion around said recess tolis together and against getting out of place ilat upon the upper surface of said base in this recess in the head. member.
The brush thus comprises but two stamped In testimony whereof I aix m sisgnature. or otherwiseJ formed members, outside of the FREDERICK W. J N SEN. 7o
several bristle tufts and loops, and ma be very cuickly and cheaply manufacture so cheap y manufactured that the user may well aiford'to throw the brush away after 1 one use, and, if found desirable, the cap and 75 base members maybe formed from a paper composition which will absorb water during useA and make thebrush unfit for use a seeond time. As the cap encloses the bristle i loops and presents a smooth rounded upper so surface, the brush may be used in the usual way without irritating the mouth of the user, f y Havin thus fully described my invention, w what I c aim is':- v e5 1. AY tooth Ybrush comprising a at base member forming a head portion and a handle y portion with aplurality of pairs of holes in said head portion, a bristle tuft assedY v through the holes of each pair and ormed o0 with a loop portion at the upper side of said base, and a cap member secured flat upon said base member throu hout the length of said head portion thereo and formed with a .3 hollow rotuberance to receive said loop por- 95 tions o said tufts. E.
2. A tooth brush comprising a ilat base member forming a head rtion and a handle ortion anddprovided with parallel rows of cles in sai head portion, bristles assedV 100 through the holes of one row` and ooped across to the holes of the VYother row with the end portions of said bristles projecting from both rows of holes and forming tufts, and a o cap member forming a head portion and a n 105 lhandle portion and conforming to the outlinel of said Ybase member and secured in face i contact therewith, said head portion of said cap member being formed with a central v 5 raised portion forming a recess in its lower 10 side to receie said loo 's of said bristles and a marginal portion to ie flat upon said base member around said recess. i
3. A tooth brush comprising a iiat base member forming a head portion and a handle 115 portion and provided with parallel rows of oles in said head portion with grooves in the upper 'side thereof leading from each-hole m eacn row toward a hole -in the other row, .5 -bristles looped intermediate their ends with 12 their end portions gojecting from said holes and forming tu and with their loop portions lying in said grooves, and a cap member forming/ a handle portion and .a
'. 0 head portion vconforming in outline to the 125,
outline of said base member, the head portion of said cap member being formedl at the central portion of its head to provide a ress at its lower side to receive said loop portions of said bristles andto provide a 13 l i. I l
