Patented Jan. 17, 1933;
Urrsn s'rATEs PATENT ounce v BERNARD J. DOWD, OF WEST HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNCR TO ROYAL TYPE 7 i WRITER COMPANY, INC., OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK TYPEWBITEB. CABINET This invention relates generally to cabinets for typewriters of the portable type and has for an object to provide novel hold-down means for securing the typewriter to the base section of the cabinet.
Another object ofthe invention is to provide novel means for centering the typewriter in the cabinet and coacting with the hold-down means in securing the typewriter against movement relative to the cabinet during transportation or use.
With these and other objects in view which will more fully appear, the nature of theinvention will be more clearly understood by following the description, the appended claims, and the several views illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan perspective view of a typewriter cabinet embodying my invention, the cover body section being shown open displaying the hold-down devices carried by the base section ready to receive a typewriter,
one of the hold-down elements being shown Figure 5 is a detail vertical cross section taken on the line 55 on Figure 1.
In the drawings in which like numerals of references indicate like parts in all of the figures, A designates the base section and B the cover section of the cabinet, which are hinge-connected in a manner for suitably encasing the typewriter generally deslgnated C.
The base section A comprises the base board proper generally designated 5, which is rectangular in shape and constructed of suitable material, and upstanding flanges 6. I
The cover section includes the cover proper generally Walls 8, one of which is hinge-connected as mounting designated 7 and suitable defining at 9 to the associated flange of the base section A. The base and cover sections A and B are provided with spring lock hardware generally designated 10, and one of these sections is provided with the usual carrying handle 11.
A metal mounting strip 12 is secured by rivets 13 or otherwise at each side of the baseboard 5 serving to reenforce the base section. and forming a part of the means empllloyed for securing the typewriter G upon t e centering pins in alinement.
Each mounting strip 12 is provided with a pair of upstanding centering pins let and a pair of hold-down levers 15, one of which is pivoted as at 16 adjacent each centering pin. Each hold-down lever-includes an upstanding hold-down finger 17 carrying a horizontal clamping lug portion 18 and is extended beyond the pivot in the opposite direction to provide a finger engaged extension 19 terminating in'an upstanding finger piece 20. Each lever also includes a depressed detent 21 adapted to enter space apertures or depressions 22 in the strip 12 and serving to hold the lever in its operative or inoperative position.
-A stop lug 23 may also be provided for limiting the extent of movement of each lever. The purpose for the center pins and the holdbase section A and retaining each pair of down levers will become apparent as the de scription progresses. g
The typewriter generally designated C and otherwise of any approved construction includes side frame portions 24:, and a rear cross beam 25. Hold-down bars 26 are secured as at 27 to the side frame portions and terminate in bent-down securing lugs 28 for cooperating with the clamping lugs 18 of the forward pair'of hold-down levers, and the rear cross beam 25 includes forward end extensions 29 which are dipped as at 80 for cooperating with the clamping lugs 18 of the rear pair of hold-down levers; v
The frame portions 24: and 29 also carry foot lugs 31 having annular grooves 32 for serve to support the legs of the typewriter and each foot lug 31 is equipped with a centhe rubber foot pieces .33 which tering aperture 34 to receive one of the centering pins 14:.
It will be readily understood that when the parts are positioned as illustrated in full lines in Figure 1 the typewriter C may be deposit ed on the base section A with the foot lug sockets 34 engaging and centering on the pins 1 1, and by engaging the finger piece and moving the levers 15 to the position illustrated in dotted lines in the same figure, the hold-down or clamping lugs 18 may be moved into engagement with the securing lugs 28 and 30 for securing the typewriter C upon the base section A. I V
The usual platen operating finger piece is indicated at and the cover section B carries a hold down block 36 of rubber or other suitable material which is brought into engagement with the finger piece 35 when the cover section is closed upon the base section,
thus further cooperating with the pins 14 insuring against displacement of the typewriter within the closed cabinet.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it is thought that the novel details of con- 4 struction, the manner of use and the advantages of my invention will be readily apparent to those familiar with portable typewriters and cabinets therefor.
I claim:
1. In a portable typewriter and the cabinet therefor comprising base and cover sections, said typewriter including in its frame de pressed holddown portions, a mounting strip secured at each side of the base, and a plurality of pivoted hold-down levers carried by each strip and each including upwardly extended hold-down lugs movable about ver tical axes into clamping engagement with the depressed frame portions for securing the typewriter upon the base.
2. In aportable typewriter and the cabinet therefor including a base, typewriter frame portions, tubular lugs secured to and depending from the frame portions and having flanged heads, rubber supporting feet surrounding anddepending from the'fianged heads, said tubular lugs providing pin receiving sockets, centering pins projecting upwardly from the base and receivable in the sockets, and means carried by the base and engageable with frame portions of the typewriter for securing the typewriter upon the base.
3. In a portable typewriter and the cabinet therefor including a base, the combination with the typewriter supporting feet having sockets therein, centering pins projecting upwardly from the base and receivable in the sockets, and means carried by the base and engageable with frame portions of the ty ewriter for securing the typewriter upon t lie base, said last named means comprising holddown levers each pivoted about a vertical axis intermediate its ends and terminating atone end in an upturned fingerpiece and at its other end in a vertically and then a horizontally disposed holddown portion for overlying and engaging a frame por tion. 7
4. In a portable typewriter and the cabinet therefor including a base, typewriter frame portions, socketed foot supporting lugs depending from the frame portions, supporting feet carried by the lugs, centering pinsprojecting upwardly from the base and receivable in the sockets, and means engageable with the frame portions adjacent each foot for securing the typewriter upon the base, said last named means comprising holddown leverseach pivoted about a vertical axis in termediate its ends adjacent one'of the socketed lugs and terminating at one end in an upturned fingerpiece and at its other end in a vertically and then a horizontally disposed holddown portion for overlying and engaging a frame portion.
5. In aportable typewriter and the cabinet therefor including a'base, typewriter frame portions, socketed foot supporting lugs depending from the frame portions, supporting feet carried by the lugs, a mounting strip secured at each side of the base, a pair of centering pins projecting upwardly from each strip and receivable in the lug sockets at a given. side of the typewriter for centeringthe t 1 ewriter on the base and securin it a ainstr lateral movement relative tosaid base, and
means engageable with the frame portions adjacent each foot for securing the typewritor upon the base, said last named means comprising holddown' levers each pivotedab'out a vertical axis intermediate its ends adj acen'r.
one of the socketed lugs and terminating at, one end in an 'upturned fingerpiece and at its other end in a vertically and then a horizontally disposed holddown'portion for overlying and engaging a frame portion.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name.
