1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a folding brush. Its primary object being to devise a folding brush that may be conveniently carried in the pocket.
A further object of the invention, is to provide a folding brush that may be readily opened and made ready for use and that will remain open until actuating mechanism is manipulated to close the same.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a folding brush having a compact case included in the frame thereof.
With these and other objects in View that may appear while the descriptiton proceeds the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically set forth, and shown in the accompanying drawing forming part of this application and in which:-
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the improved folding brush showing the action mechanism exposed to view.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the brush in the opened position.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail showing a fragmentary portion of the mechanism.
Fig. 4 is a detail view of the connecting arm and position retaining device therefor.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary view at right angles to Fig. 3.
Referring more in detail to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views it will be seen the invention comprises a rectangular frame Ill having a plurality of bristle holders ll positioned laterally therein. Said holders are provided with bristles l2 secured therein in the customary manner and are rotatably mounted on trunnions l3 and M, the latter being extended and forming a crank 65. Said trunnions are engaged in apertures 16, in the said frame I0, and are connected together for simultaneous action by a connecting bar l'l wherein are apertures l8 to receive the cranks l5. One end of the connecting bar I! terminates in a thumb lever l9 by means of which the device is manipulated and which protrudes through any covering that may be constructed over the frame and operating mechanism. A protrusion 20 is formed in the connected bar and two depressions 2! are formed in the frame in relation thereto. The bar is arranged for spring engagement of the protrusion 20 with either of the depressions Z! to thereby retain the brush in an open or closed position.
In one end of the frame one or more compact cases 22 are formed for added convenience for feminine users. Said compact cases will occupy the otherwise empty space in the frame which must be provided to accommodate the bristles when the brush is folded.
From the foregoing it will be seen we have pro- 10 vided a novel folding brush which may be provided with an outer envelope or metal case as desired. The bristles of the brush when not in use are folded over to lie upon adjacent bristles and thereby provide a compact and inexpensive toilet article.
It is believed that the construction and advantages of the structure shown may be apparent from the foregoing paragraphs taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing without further detailed description.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been disclosed it is understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of co-operating parts may be resorted to within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
We claimz- In a folding brush as described comprising a rectangular frame, a plurality of bristle holding bars extending transversely of said frame in spaced parallel relation, trunnions on the ends of said bars journaled in the side members of said frame, said trunnions at one end of the bars being extended and bent to form cranks and a 35 connecting bar extending longitudinally of a side member of the frame having spaced apertures to receive the free ends of the cranks, one end of said bar being off-set inwardly into close parallel relation to the side member of said frame and ter- 4 minating in a thumb lever protruding above the side member for reciprocating the connecting bar to raise or lower the bristle holding bars, said off-set portion of the connecting bar having a protrusion on its inner side for resiliently engag- 45 ing one of a pair of spaced depressions formed in the side member of the frame for retaining the connecting bar in its adjusted position.
