Description

H. H. SIBLEY. Malle-Comb.
No. 214,593. Pafented April 22, 1879.
NJETERS, PMDTLLLITDGRA'PHER. WASHINGTON. I)4 c.
. A Amm v said teeth UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
HARVEY H. SIBLEY, OF WORCESTER, ASSIGNOR- OF ONE-HALF HlS RIGHT TO WILLIAM PEARSON, OF SPENCER, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN MANE-COM`BS.
' Specification forming part of LettersIB Patent No. 214,593, dated April 22, 1879 application iiled August 16, 1878.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that l, HARVEY H. SIBLEY, of l/Vorcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mane- Conibs; andI declare the following to be a description of my said invention suciently full, clear, and exact to enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to inake and use the same, referencei being had to the ac companying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a top view of my iniproved inane-comb, one end thereof shown in section; and Fig. 2 represents a side view of the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a convenient and serviceable device for combing the inanes and tails of horses, and for similar purposes, whereby the tangled hairs may be readily straightened or arranged without breaking` or tearing them out; and to this end my invention consists in a revoluble comb, constructed substantially as hereinafter described.
In the drawings, A denotes a cylindrical head-piece, of wood or other suitable material, having a covering, B, of rubber cloth or similar flexible fabric, in which are set wire teeth C, that project radially from the head at all sides, in the manner illustrated, the length of C being about three-quarters of an inch, more or less.
The diameter of the head may be about one inch, and its length some five and one-half inches, though l do not desire to confine inyselt' to these exact proportions as to size.
Metal caps D are arranged over the ends of the head A, having central or axial openings, in which the ends c c of the handle E are inserted, said ends c e forming pivots or journals, upon which the head A can revolve.
The handle E is, in the present instance,
,formed ofwire, with a spring-coil, f, at its outer end, with straight parts g for the hand` f to grasp, and with offsets 7p and curved portions 7c to meet the ends c, as shown, thus forming an elastic or spring handle, whereby the pivots e c will be retained in their lopenin gs without other fastenings.
In combing a tangled mane the head A revolves when the teeth come in contact with a close snarl, thus letting the other teeth take a hold below the snarl, so that the tangled portions are loosened up and straightened by gentle degrees, and without tearing out or breaking the hairs.
If a greater amount of friction is required vto prevent the turning of the head, it can be attained by pressing together the parts g g of the handle within the hand.
VThe teeth C could, if desired, be made rigid with the head A, but l prefer their iiexible setting, as herein shown. The handle E could also be made with loops or eyes, to pass around projecting ends on the head A, in lieu of the ends e e entering the axis of the head; butlconsider the present construction preferable.
WhatI cla-im as of myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The mane-comb hereinbcfore described, consisting of the cylindrical revoluble head, provided with Vprojectin g teeth, and supported at its ends by the double spring-handle, the
two sides lof which are arranged to be together grasped and pressed toward each other by the hand of the operator, substantially as setA forth, whereby greater or less resistance may be imparted to the revoluble head while in use, for the purpose stated.
2. The combina-tion of the revoluble head A, flexible covering B, projecting teeth C, and elastic wire handle E, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
Witness my hand this Sth day of August, A. D. 1878.
