WHHEES v I IHVEHTOT? I Q/M gheofiefe-l efer 0n f-f I @7 18 ATTQ HEY UNITED STATES PATENT @FFICE'.
THEODORE PETERSON, OF AKRON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE HOlVARD MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
NECK-EXERCISING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,188, dated April 14, 1891.
Application filed November 26, 1890. Serial No. 372,711- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THEODORE PETERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Neck-Exercising Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to that class of gymnastic appliances called neck-exercising apparatus. Heretofore these have ordinarily consisted of a continuous strap or band arranged to pass around the back of the operators head, with a cross-band to pass over the top of the head, the ends of said strap being connected with a weighted cord and separated by an interposed transverse stick to keep them from contact with the face of the operator.
The object of my invention is to providea new improved simple neck-exercising apparatus that shall embody a new form of harness for the head, having side straps pivotally connected with the ends of said harness, so that their line of draft shall not move the harness on the operators head as it is changed, and which side straps shall be provided with clips by which they may be readily connected with and disengaged from the ordinary handle or stirrup of a chest-weight or other similar gymnastic exercising apparatus.
To this object my invention consists of the peculiar construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and then specifically pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
' In the accompanying drawings, in which similarletters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 represents a person using my improvement; Fig. 2, an enlarged perspective View of the handle or stirrup with the ends of the side straps attached; Fig. 3, a detached perspective of one arm of the stirrup with one of the clips-in the first position of attachment; Fig. at, a perspective of the end of one of the side straps, showing the attaching-clip; Fig. 5, aside elevation of one of the stirrup-arms, showing the position of the clip arranged to fit the back of the head of theoperator, angularly united at their ends, from which points of union extend straps B B, pivotally connected therewith. On the inner face of the outer ends of these straps are attached clips C. These clips are preferably made of sheet metal, as brass or steel, having elasticity and rigidity, bent to form aflatten ed tapering tube having one side open, with outwardly-turned edges, and arranged to be connected with the straps B by rivets, as shown, orotherequivalentdevioe. Thus constructed, the clips 0 are readily fitted on and detached from a handle or stirrup D of achest-weight without removing or changing any parts.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a neck-exercising apparatus, a harness for the head, composed of two straps angularly connected at their ends and having side straps pivotally connected with and extending from the points of union of said straps, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a neck-exercising apparatus, the com THEODORE PETERSON.
In presence of- O. P. HUMPHREY, O. HUMPHREY.
