Claims.

This invention relates to a novel and improved form of badge, the novel features of which will be best understood from the following description and the annexed drawings, in which we have 5 shown a selected embodiment of the invention and in which:

Fig. 1 is a face view of a badge constructed according to our invention;

Fig. 2 is a view on a greatly enlarged scale of the rear of the badge;

The back plate 2 is preferably formed of resilient material and is bowed lengthwise of the badge, the high part of the bow engaging beneath the opposite ears 4 and 5, as best shown in Fig. 4.

As best shown in Fig. 3, one end of the back plate likewise engages beneath and contacts with the ear 6, whereas the other end is preferably slit, as shown at I and 8, whereby it is divided into three parts or tongues 9, I0, and II. The two tongues 9 and II have their edge portions bent backwardly towards the edge l2 of the flange at that end of the front plate, whereas the central tongue I0 is bent downwardly towards the front plate I.

The front plate I is provided with a window I3 5 through which may be seen any object which is held in place between the front and back plates.

Preferably, this window is closed by a sheet I4 of transparent material which is heldin place against the back of the front plate by the resili- 55 case of the back plate.

The back plate carries a pin of the safety type preferably formed of a single length of wire having a coil I5 and a guard I6 to receive the point I I of the pin. The other end I8 of the wire forms an abutment contacting with the rear surface of the back plate 2.

The back plate is provided with a slot I9 extending inwardly from one edge thereof and is also provided with a hole 20 spaced from the slot and preferably in line therewith, as indicated. The clear distance 2I between the hole and the closed end of the slot is materially greater than the clear distance 22 between the guard and the coil of the pin, so that when the parts are assembled the end I8 of the wire will be between the slot and the hole, as indicated. The distance 2| is slightly greater than the clear distance 22. The parts may then be assembled, as shown in Figs. 7, 8, and 9, the guard-end of the pin being slipped into the slot I9 and the pointed end of the pin being inserted through the hole 20 until the parts reach some such position as indicated in Fig. 8. When thus being inserted, it may be necessary to straighten out the coil to some extent by bending the pointed end I! away from the guard still further than what is shown in Fig. 8. The parts are then clamped together by pressing the coil I5 through the hole 20, the plate 2 or the pin, or both, yielding slightly to permit this action, when it will be seen that the end I8 will bear against the rear of the back plate 2 and will cooperate with the main part or body 23 of the pin and with the coil I5 to hold the pin and plate firmly together while at the same time permitting ready detachment, if necessary. This portion of the pin is provided with offsets, plainly shown in Figs. 2 and 5, to prevent tilting of the pin, as is known in the art. I

The badge is particularly adapted for use in combination with a license, for example a hunting or fishing license. It has been customary for a State to issue such licenses and for the holder of such a license to carry an identification of some kind on a badge. This identification may correspond to an automobile license plate, but the actual license is often left at home by the hunter or fisherman. At the same time,'the procedure of having a license on a printed form, and another printed form to go into a badge, causes an expensive duplication.

The above drawbacks have been obviated by our invention, in that we have made our badge preferably rectangular so that a rectangularshaped license 24 (Fig. 6) may be conveniently folded and placed in the badge between thefront of the license.

The license is so folded that this summary will appear at the window l3 when the license is placed in the badge between the front and rear plates, and the sizes of the license and the badge are so designed that the license may be readily folded with the summary appearing at the window of the badge.

In operation, and assuming that there is no license in the badge, the license may be first folded, for example along the lines 26 indicated in Fig. 6, so that the summary will be in the,

proper position. Then the back plate may be removed from the front plate of the badge.

After the tongues 9, l0, and H are slid past the edge l2, the entire back plate may be slid lengthwise of the front plate, somewhat as indicated in Fig. 5, iuitil the two plates are entirely separated. Then the folded license may be placed in position with the summary appearing in the window l3, after which the back plate may be slid into position beneath the ears 4, 5, and B, at which time the tongues 9, I0, and II will snap back into some position as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3. The back plate is preferably of resilient sheet metal, as of course will be understood.

This. may be done by pressing rearwardly against the said back plate being resilient, whereby its edge portion adjacent the fourth side of the front plate may be sprung back to clear the flange on that side and being bowed backwards adjacent its center to bear against two of said ears, and a pin on said badge to secure it to a garment.

2. A rectangular badge comprising a front plate and a back plate, rearwardly extending flanges on all four sides of said front plate within which said back plate fits, ears extending inwardly from three of said flanges to hold said plates together, said back plate being resilient, whereby its edge portion adjacent the fourth side of the front plate may be sprung back to clear the flange on that side, said edge portion having two slits extending inwardly from the edge thereof and forming a central tongue which is turned backwardly and two side tongues extending forwardly, and a pin on said badge to secure it to a garment.

3. In a badge or the like, a back plate of resilient material having a slot extending inwardly from one edge thereof and a hole spaced from said slot, -a wire pin having a portion lying adjacent the front face of said plate, with a guard extending through said slot and a coil extending through said hole, said guard being in engagement with the closed end of said slot and said coil being in engagement with the side of said hole next said slot, the clear distance between said coil and the part of said guard engaging said end of the slot being slightly less than j clear distance between said guard and coil being less than the clear distance between the slot and the hole, and one end of said wire occurring at said guard and engaging the rear surface of said plate between the inner end of said slot and said hole.

5. In combination, a rectangular badge comprising a front plate and a back plate, a pin on said back plate to secure said badge to a'garment, said front plate having therein a window and also having rearwardly extending flanges whereby a license or the like may be folded into rectangular form and be received within said flanges with a portion exposed at said window, and means on said flanges adapted to detachably holdsaid back plate against such folded license and within said flanges.
