Description

Patented Jan. 17, 1939 UNITED STATES T," oFFIcE.
3 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in bathing costumes, playsuits and similar styles of sportswear for women and girls and has reference particularly to garments of this character which are reversible.
The modern sports wardrobe of a women or girl includes at least `two bathing costumes and an equal number of playsuits. It is not always convenient or possible to find accommodations for so many separate costumes either in traveling bags or in the meager spaces provided for clothes in state-rooms or hotel rooms. As a result it is often found necessary to reduce the size of the wardrobe and in doing soit is usually the duplicate sports costume which is sacrificed.
The present invention has been devised to over.- come this condition and has for its principal object to provide a bathing costume or playsuit which is constructed to enable the same to be reversed to present a new pattern o-r material.
A further object of my invention is to provide a reversible bathing costume or playsuit comprising an upper or waist portion and integral skirt or shorts.
A still further object of the invention is to vprovide a reversible costume of this character with integral waist and loose shorts of double layers of material and means interposed between the layers of the shorts in the leg portions. to
cause the layer being worn inside to yieldably embrace the legs and to afford the necessary protection to the wearer without in any way detracting from the fullness and style of the outside layer. v
And a still further object of the present invention is to provide a reversible bathing garment and playsuit which is constructed of two sections separately attached along opposite sides and in the shoulder straps toenable the sections to be separated and turned about so as to bring the reverse sides to the outside, after which the sections are attachably connected together again.
I have accomplished these objects by means of a construction for a reversiblegarment of this character which will be describedin detail inthe following, set forth in the appended claims and illustratively exemplified in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a back View of a model in sitting position, wearing a bathing costume according to the present invention, a portion of the shorts being cut away to illustrate how the inner layer of material is held against the 'wearer;i
Figure 2 is a View ofthe modelv in standing position showing the appearance of the present garment, a portion of the shorts being cut away to again show how the inner layer hugs the leg to give the needed protection;
Figure 3 is a rear view of the reversible garment according to the present invention and 5 showing one half in section to illustrate the arrangement of the two layers'of material which constitute the reversible feature of the invention;
Figure 4 is a substantially transverse sectional view of the shorts taken on lines 5-5 of Fig- 10 ure 3;
- Figure 5 is a sectional view of the closure flap at the back of the garment, the section being taken along lines 6 6 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawing and particularly to Figures 1, 2 and 3 to 5, the reversible garment comprises two layers of material A and B, each thereof having an upper or waist portion` I0, Ill and integral shorts II, II'. Each layer A or B is the same in construction as the other layer so that the garment is virtually one costume within another. In assembling the garment the v inside faces of the layers are placed together and rows of stitching I2 are run along the neck line I3, arm holes I 4 and leg openings I5. Ther 255 neck opening at the back of the garment is deeper than` it is in front and two rectangular placks I6 and I1 project from opposite edges of the opening and are provided with buttons I8 and I9 respectively and button holes 20 and 2| 30 respectively. The placks I6 and I1 overly each other when the garment is on the wearer and may be buttoned together to hold the garment in proper position on the figure.
The shorts to be comfortable must be loosely draped and -in order to retain this feature in a garment of this character and still protect the wearer, a circular band of elastic webbing 22 is loosely disposed between the layers of material A and B in each leg portion and Suspended from the lower ends of the depending elastic straps 23 which project upwardly between the layers and are attached at their upper ends to the waist line of the garment. It will be clear that in the reverse positions of the garment the bands 22 45 will always cause the inner layer of the leg portion of the shorts to yieldably embrace the wearer as illustratively exemplified in Figures 1 and 2.
It will be seen that the present invention enables a person to double her number of changes of costumes with only one half the number of garments otherwise necessary for the purpose. The fabrics of which the separate layers A and 55 B are made may be varied not only as to patterns, but as to materials as well.
Having described my invention and the manner in which the same may be used, what I claim and desire to secure Yby Letters Patent is:
l. A reversible bathing'costume, comprising a Waist portion and short portion attached thereto, said waist portion and said short portion being formed of two layers of materials, the two layers being attached together along the neck, arm and leg openings, and elastic means suspended between the layers of material of the short portion and embracing the leg members thereof to yieldably hold the inside layer against the wearer.`
2. A reversible bathing costume, comprising a portion and short portion attached thereto, such short portion being formed Vof superimposed layers of material .the layers being attached 1 along the leg openings, straps suspended from the mid-portion of the costume and depending between the layers of material,V and circular bands of elastic webbing carried by the straps and embracing the leg members of the sho-rt portion formed by the inside layer of material on the inside to cause the same to cling to the leg of the Vwearer and allow the outside layer Ato hang freely from the waist line. Y Y
3. A reversible bathing costume comprising shorts formed of superimposed layers lof material attached together along the waist line and the leg openingsofl the shorts, straps suspended from Vthe waist line of the shorts and depending between the layers of material, and circulanbands bracing the leg members formed by the inside layers of material to cause the same to cling to the leg of the wearer and.V allow the outside layer to hang freely from the waist line.
