dated July 12, 1938;
The object of the invention improved and simplied binding. device formed of relatively thin sheet metal or of plastic or other suitable material. S l0.
on the accompanying drawing, in which:
view of a sheet material blank from which thebinding device is formed; Figure 2l is anv end ew of the completed bindl5 ing device; f L `v Figure 3 is a plan view of a sheet blank showing a modied arrangement; and f.
Figure bis a perspective view 'of the binding device formed from the blank shown on Figure 3. 20 Referring to Figure 1, the sheet blank may be of metal or of plastic material and comprises a base portion or strip I0 having arms il extending at right angles fromone edge thereof and spaced apart' longitudinally ofthe base portion or strip.J
The base `portion or strip mayv have one or more armsy so as to form a single ring when bent into shapey or a binding device having several rings.
Referring to Figure 2,-the base portion or strip I0 is tolded together longitudinally to be of 1 3o vS-shape in cross section vto provide an "outer wall I2, an intermediate wall I'3,` and an inner w'all lil, the intermediate and outer walls being preferably in contact with each other, but the intermediate and inner walls being spaced apart toprovide a recess I5. In other words, the base portion or strip is bent to S- hape to form a closed loop deiined by the outer and intermediate walls I2 I and I3, and the open loop I5between the intermediate and inner walls. The recess I5 provided free Vends of theA arms Il which are bentaround to ring clearly shown by Figure 2.v Before the rings are closed, they are extended through the perforatins in the sheets tov be bound and then the ring ends are extended into the recess I5 to be retained in closed position. The
be so gauged that the therein will-be frictionally'held, or the walls of is to produce an The binding device of my invention is disclosed form, as
-the other end of width of the recess I5 may arm ends after insertion the loop may be pressed together into frictional engagement with the ring ends.
When comparatively light vsheet material is used, the ring-forming arms may be strengthened portions I I which and stiiened by being provided with ilangeor tab 5 are folded over against the inner facesof the arms, as clearly shown by Fig-i ure 3, .the anges terminating of the arms so as single thickness for of the base portion short of the ends' to leave the arm ends of projection into the recess I5 '10 III, as clearly shown by Flg- Il' may extend to the ends of the` arms and the recesses I5 then' made of sufilcie -f While I have shown and nt width to receive the 'ring ends.
described certain embodiments of my improvement for the purpose of illustration,
I do not desireto be limited thereto,
as changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim:
1. A bindingdevice comprising a longitudinal strip bent and folded together longitudinally to be of S-shape in cross section to 'provide an outer wall, an intermediate wall, andan inner wall, said intermediate and inner walls being'spaced apart to. provide va recess, arms extending from lone edge of said strip and bent to surround said strip for insertion of their form closed binding 2. A binding strip,
arms -extending'from one edge vand bent to surround said strip to form binding rings, the intermediate longitudinal said strip being bent free ends into said recess to rings;
device comprising 4a longitudinal ofsaid strip` portion of inwardly against said strip and the in ner longitudinal portion of the strip 35 being bent outwardly into parallelism with the intermediate portion but lto leave a longitudinally extending recess into being spaced therei'rm ,which the ends of said ring forming arms are inserted to be frietionally held therein. o
3. A binding device comprising a ring formed by bendinga being bent to Jfiat strip, S-shape to form a closed loprand said ring at one end an open-loop, said openv loop/ adapted to receive hold the-ring closed.l
Said ring t0 thereby irlctionally CrrARLEs n. Emma.
