UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PAPER-CLIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 11, 1908.
Application filed October 29. 1906- 8erial No. 341016.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN SHERMAN Roo'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Paper-Clips, of which the fol owing, taken in connectlon with the drawing, is a specification.
The primary object of my invention is to produce a device for holding papers to ether, so that they may be readily detache without being defaced, torn or mutilated, and one i that will have greater grippin surface than clips as heretofore constructe Another object ofmy invention is to provide what I shall term a reversible clip. One of the difficulties with paper clips now in use is that the spring tension is soon exhausted and the clip is practically worthless. With my construction it is simply necessary to pass one circle over the other to restore the original tension, thereby prolonging the usefulness of the device.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, and in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, I have illustrated one form of device embodying the principle of my invention, althou h the same may be carried into efiect in ct or ways without departing from the ipirit of my invention, and in this drawing igure 1 illustrates its ap lication to ,a number of sheets of paper. ig. 2 is a perspective view of my paper clip.
In the construction of these clips I employ wire sufficiently stron to provide the necessary tension, which is st coiled into a complete circle A, and continued in a similar manner until approximately one half of a second circle a 1s formed, which fits closely upon the first circle after the manner of an extension spring. After the half circle is completed the end of the wire a is bent at a proximately right angles to a tangent to t e coil and extends part wayacross the diameter of the cli Pressure against the extended end a wil facilitate the opening of the circles for the admission of apers B, or other articles, which it isdesire to hold together. The clip is then turned around until the papers, or articles to be held together are directly between the coils A and a, when an even contact or gripping force between the two coils is had whic securely holds the articles together, with the end a of the wire, pressing said papers closely together and affordin a convenient means of removing the \clip' wien it is desired to.
I claim:
A pa er clip com rising a single piece of wire coi ed upon itseif to form a gri ping contact between ap roximately one alf of the circumference 0 said coils, the half of the coil formin the grippin contact adapted to be reversed from one si e to the other of the 'main coil, and one end of the wire extendintg diametrically t0 the opposite end thereo substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN SHERMAN RooT.
Witnesses:
O. S. OORNING, G. W. JOHNSTON.
