Description

O-T- SUNDIN ARTICLE HOLDER July 17, 1923.
yFiled July 25. 1922;
Sii
OSCAR T. BUNDIN, OF PVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOB T DAVID E. ZELL, IN- COBPOBA'IED, A CORPORATION 0F NEW YQBK.
ARTICLE HOLDER.
Application filed July 25, 1922. Serial No. 577,317.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that l, OSCAR T. Spinnin citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful improvements 1 n Article Holders, ot which the following is a s ecification.
y invention relates to a holder adapted for retainingarticles such as memorandum ads, checlr books, match books, and the l' e.
The essential objects of my invention are to enable the substitution or renewal of the article in the holder at will; to render initial bindin of the articles unnecessary; to insure against accidental ,escape o t t ie article from the holder; to facilitate insertion of the article therein and to attain these objects in a simple and inexpensive structure..
'llo the above ends essentially my invention consists in such parts and in suchcombinations of parts as fall within the scope of the appended'claims.
In the accompanying' drawings which form a part ofthis specification,
Figure 1 is a perspective view oi my holder in closed position engaging a book of aper matches7 a I igure 2, a view of the saine open,
Figure 8, a section 'the on line Figure ll, l-l of Figure clampii Lilie 'i terence characters indicate like parts tn Jtwhout the views..
of my invention herein illustrated a semble casing is provided comprising a hacking portion 8, a short flap portion 9, and a longer flap portion 10. The casing may be of leather or other tough protective `lienible material which will facilitate bending or folding; at the bases otD the deps, as at 11 and 12. The flaps overlap and are engageable with each other to form a front wall by means of a separable or snap fastener 1a in the flap margins.
f the holder on line 'view of the A metallic clamp or clip member cut and` shaped by suitahle tools from a single sheet o metal comprises an oblong plate or base 16 with end folds 17 forming inturned ears 18 terminating in inturned prongs 19. lntegral with one side of the base is a back wall 20 provided with a resilient inturned flange 21 substantially parallel with the base. Formed in an intermediate portion of the forward edge of the flange is a downwardly directed lip 23. There are unbent flat portions 24 of the flange 21 at each side of the lip?,
The descri d member is permanently engaged with the casing as follows. ,The
base or strip 16 rests transversely of the latter upon the inner face of the back 8 adjacent the foldable portion 11 of the flap 9. The originally unbent ends 18 of the base strip are inwardly bent around the lateral edges of the casing so that the resultant ears or lugs bear against the outer face of the back 8 at its lateral margins, with the prongs 19 embedded inthe casing, as shown in Figure d. It will be noted that not only is the metallic member a singie integral piece. but that it is engageable with the casing with speed and facility.
The article to be carried in the holder A does not require to have aflixed thereto any binding strip 26, staple 27, and cover 30.
rllhe portion 26 of the book is slid edgewise `into the clamp from either side, beingJ guided in its travel over the base 16 by the flat guide portions 2d pressing downwardlv from above. Vtfhen thc book reaches the depending lip 23 the pressure of the lip upon thc bool; increases as greater stress is exerted on the resilient flange 21, and thus the book is tightly clamped after its complete insertion.
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a flexible casing, of a lat metallic base strip dsposed transversely upon an intermediate portion of the casing, folded lugs 'on the ends of the strip embracing the lateral edges of the casing, an upright back upon the strip, an overhanging flange on the back, and a depending lip on the flange.
2. lin a device of the character described the combination with a flexible casing of a dat metallic base strip restinpr on the inlil@ n ner face of an intermediate portion ofthe on the back above the strip, and a down- Wardly directed lip formed in the forward edge of the flange.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.`
OSCAR T.V SUNDIN.
