C. L. PFERSCH BOOK MATCH Filed April. 23, 1920 11%171072 CZaWliPfmch I Patented June 19, 1923.
CLARENCE L. PFERSCH, OF BARBERTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOB TO THE DIAMOND MATCH COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A COBPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
BOOK MATCH.
Application filed April 23, 1920. Serial No. 375,953.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE L. PFnRsoH,
a citizen of the United States, and resident of Barberton, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio,,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book Matches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to matches, and more especially to that variety of matches commercially known as book-matches wherein matches in card formare associated with a flexible book-like cover having at its respective ends relatively long and narrow folds, whereof the narrow fold, provided with an external coating of ignition mate-, rial, is bent upon and fastened to the marginal portions of the match cards, and whereof the longer fold constitutes a cover flap which is designed to be folded upon the matches and to be temporarily retained in folded position thereon by tucking the free end of the flap under the corresponding dge of the narrow fold. To use'the matches they are individually torn from the marginal portion of the card and their heads then struck, by a sharp stroke, on the exposed ignition surface of the cover. This striking operation frequently results in the accidental breaking of the match splint, and also in the accidental i ition of the heads of the attached mate es (if the cover flap be carelessly left open) by the spark or fiare from i the ignited match. vThe ignition material,
being unprotected, is frequently detrimentally affected by its absorption of moisture when the package is carried in the pocket of the user, especially during warm weather; and when two books are loosely carried in the same pocket the exposed ignition material of one book is liable to accidentally ignite by rubbing friction, the match heads of the other book in the event of the cover flap of the latter being or becoming released and thus exposing the match heads.
The principal object of my invention is to overcome the objections above mentioned, and to that end I provide the coated cover fold with a flexible protective flap between which and the underlying coated surface, the head of a match to be ignited can be readily inserted, and pressure then applied by the fingers to such flap in such a manner that when the match is pulled out the head thereof will be efiectually ignited bythe ignition material; the attachment ofl'the "protective flap to the ignition cover fold being such as to permit the main cover fold to be tucked beneath the free edge of the ignition fold, all as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a form of match package embodying my invention, the main cover flap being represented as open, and the operation of striking a match being 5 indicated.
Fig. 2 is a side View, enlarged, of the closed package.
In the form of book-match package illustrated in the drawings, the match cards (two of which are usuall superposed) comprise groups. of match sp ints 4 having ignitible heads 5 and basal connecting or marginal portions 6, and the cover comprises a strip of cardboard or thick paper whereof oneend is folded pas at 7) upon and secured to the margins o the match cards to constitute, in effect, a pocket fold therefor, and whereof the other end is extended beyond the heads of the matches to constitute a flexible cover 90 flap, as 8, which may be folded over upon the match cards. The pocket fold 7 is fastened to the margins of the cards, usually by a clenched staple 9, and such fold is provided with an external coating of frictional ignition material, as 10. The cover flap is, or may be, temporarily held in folded position by tucking its free end under the stapled fold.
In pursuance of my invention I impose o and fastento the upper or coated surface of the fold 7 a supplemental strip 11, usually of cardboard or relatively thick paper, which strip is preferabl secured in place by the same staple, 9, t at unites the cover and as cards. The staple is applied to the body of the -strip, s1ightly below the inner longitudinal edge of the latter, in order that the attached strip shall present a protective flaplike member between which and the coated its surface of the cover, the head of a match can be readily inserted, as illustrated in Fig.
1. With its head thus inserted, and the flap pressed down thereon by the thumb or fin- I ger of the user, the match can be longituits dinally pulled in such a manner as to. efiect easy ignition of the head, without liability of bending or breaking the match splint.
' The staple 9 is applied a suflicient distance below the free edge of the coated fold in no order to permit the end of the main cover flap to be tucked under the stapled fold, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
Although the device above described is exceedingly simple, I am enabled thereby to attain the beneficial object of mv invention hereinbefore mentioned. In addition, the protective strip improves the appearance of the package and affords thereon additional space for advertising or other printed matter.
I claim- 1. In a match package having a cover portion including an integral end fold provided with an external coating of ignition material, a flexible protective flap mounted on said fold and constituting a permanent part thereof, said flap overlying the said ignition material and having a free lower portion whereby the said flap can be flexed and,
matches having a marginal portion, a cover having an end portion folded upon and secured to the marginal portion of the card and-having also an extension adapted to J0 flexed about the match heads and tucked beneath the marginal fold of the cover, said fold having on its exterior surface a coating of igniting material, and a strip imposed on and permanently secured slightly below its inner longitudinal edge to said marginal fold to provide a flexible flap overlying the coated surface with the outer longitudinal edge and both ends of the flap free.
4., A match package comprising a card of matches having a marginal portion, a cover having an end portion folded upon and secured to the marginal portion of the card and having also an extension adapted to 'be flexed about the match heads and tucked beneath the marginal fold of the cover, said vfold having on its exterior surface a coating of igniting material, and a strip imposed on said marginal fold to provide a flexible flap overlying the coated surface, said strip and fold, together with the marginal portion of the card, being united by a common staple which penetrates the strip intermediate its longitudinal edges, whereby the outer longitudinal edge and both ends of the strip are free, and whereby also the cover extension can be tucked beneath the free inner lon itudinal edge of the marginal fold of t e cover. i
Signed at Barberton, in the county of Summit and State of Ghio, this 19th day of April, A. 111920.
