The subject matter of this invention is an l improved and serviceable hair clasping barrette of the type having a longitudinally curved hollow bar adapted to be initially set on the top surface ofthe hair to be clasped and including a loop swingablyv connected to one end of the bar and adapted to be inserted under the hair and constituting means cooperatingV with a spheroidal shaped protuberance depending from another end of the bar for disengageably locking the loop to the bar. One object of the invention is realized in the provision of a barrette of the character referred to wherein the bar includes spaced and depending rows of teeth adapted to initially divide the hair to be clasped into several strands and wherein 'the teeth of the spaced rows of teeth are disposed in a staggered relation to prevent slippage of the bar vlongitudinally of the hair to be clasped after the bar has been set and applied to the hair. 'I'he invention has as another object the provision of a barrette of the character referred to wherein the loop is formed from wire and comprises an expanded portion for staying the hair, ya reduced portion adapted to disconnectably engage the protuberance depending from the bar, and a terminal eye defined by crossed and superimposed arms of the loop atV one end thereof, the eye being swingably associated with the bar and includes ends pivotally carried by a socket sustained by the bar. 'Ihe invention has as a further object the provision of an improved and ornamental barrette characterized by a longitudinally curved bar having a plurality of perforations each bounded by a plurality of prongs serving as means to hold ornamental effects in spaced relation to the rim of a respective perforation to permit air currents to flow into and out of the bar to facilitate drying of the clasped hair. Other objects, features and advantages of the invention will appear from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing in which:

'I'he hair clasping barrette B comprises a hollow'bar II and a swingable loop I2. Bar I I includes a longitudinally curved top I 3` having downward and inwardly curved edge portions I4 10 eachintegral with a horizontally arranged wall vI5 each provided with a dependingpart I6 having a plurality of teeth I'I, the teeth ofthe depending parts I6 constituting two` spaced'rows of teeth disposed longitudinally of the bar with *l5 the teeth of one of the rows disposed in staggered relation with the teeth of the opposing row` as' Vshown in Figs. 3 and 6.

When the bar is positioned on the head of hair several strands of hair are disposed between the 2`0 adjacent teeth of the opposing rows of teeth and since the teeth'of the opposing rows are staggered, the several strands are in part divided to form ared portions F which in turn cooperate' with the teeth thus preventing displacement of 25 the bar longitudinally of the hair to be clasped.

The wire loop I2 comprises spaced arms I8 having a closed and reduced end I9 and an eye E, and for purposes of specification the part of the loop between the eye E and the closed ree30 duced end I9, may be considered as the normally expanded part thereof.

It will beA noted that the arms I8 are provided with the inclined portions 2| each merging with' a part 22 having an inwardly turned terminal 35 23, that is, arms I8 are bent, crossed, and superimposed to define the eye E characterized by inclined portions 2I, sides or parts 22, and the terminals 23.

The terminals 23 are pivotally sustained in 40 socket 24 carried at one end of the bar and the reduced and closed part I9 of the loop is adapted to be pressed against depending rounded protuberance 25 and over the latter to be received and interlocked with the spaced grooves 26 45 inclined portions 2| which may be secured together by solder if parted to the eye of the loop has normal tendency to urge terminals 23 towards each thus preventing accidental removal of the eye from socket 24 even if the crossed portions 2l were not directly secured.

In assembling the loop to the bar, the arms I8 are moved towards each other, thus separating terminals 23, permitting the latter to be properly positioned in respect to socket 24. Thereafter manual pressure is removed from armspIB-'and the latter areV automatically diverged and the terminals 23 enter the opposed ends of socket 24. Following this step, the inclined and crossed portions 2| may be xedly secured together.

To facilitate drying of the hair clasped between the bar and loop, the bar is provided with a plurality of slots 29. These slots dene a plurality of prongs or fingers 3U which are bentv upwardly and crimped to constitute a setting or seat for supporting an ornamental stone 3l, the seat thus formed holds the widest part of the stones away from the top surface of the bar and .consequently air may flow through or out of the slots 29 and through or out of the openings formed in the bar after the prongs have been bent outwardly and upwardly.

While the principles of the invention have been shown and described in connection with a preferred embodiment thereof, the features of which have also been disclosed in detail, it is to be un- `derstood that this has been done for purposes of disclosure only and that the invention is not limited thereby but is susceptible to various changes in form and detail of its scope. Y

Iclaim:

1. In a barrette, a longitudinally curved bar having spaced and depending rows of teeth with the teeth of said rows disposed in staggered relation; a loop comprising crossed arms and constituting an eye swingably carried by said bar, a closed and reduced part, and an expanded part intermediate said eye and reduced part; and a grooved protuberancerdepending from said bar and adapted to disengageably interlock with said reduced part.

2. In a barrette, a. longitudinally curved bar having spaced and depending rows of teeth with the teeth of said rows disposed in staggered relation, a grooved protuberance depending from said bar, a socket carried by said bar; and a loop comprising a reducedportion for disconnectably desired. 3. In a barrette, a longitudinally curved bar having spaced and depending rows of teeth with the teeth. of said rows disposed in staggered relation, a rounded and grooved protuberance depending from one end of said bar, a socket'carried by another end of said bars; and a loop comprising spaced arms constituting av reduced portion for resiliently interlocking with said protuberance, an expanded portion to prevent downward displacement of hair interposed between said bar and loop, and inwardly turned terminals swingably carried by said socket.

4. In a barrette, a'longitudinally curved barv having spaced and depending rows oi teeth with the teeth of said rows disposed in staggered relation, a grooved protuberance depending from Y said bar, a socket carried by said bar, and a loop comprising spaced and curved arms constituting a reduced and closed portion for resiliently interlocking with said protuberance, anexpanded portion to prevent downward displacement of hair interposed between said bar and loop, and inwardly turned terminals swingably carried by said socket. y
