PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPI-IINE BRETTSCHNEIDER, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
WATER WAVER.
Application filed June 26, 1925.
To all lwhom z'z may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrrrrivn Banr'rsoi-inmune, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful improvements in lVater l/Vavers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a hair waving device.
ln producing an artificial wave in human hair effective results may be obtained by first moistening the hair, and then folding the hair over an object and permitting it to remain in such position until the hair dries. Such a process is known to the art as water waving, and is particularly desirable owing to the absence of injurious after effects on the hair ofthe user.
An object of the present invention is to form a wave in human hair by means of a device contoured to conform with the shape of the head of the user, whereby a central member is forced upward between a pair of frame members to draw the hair with it and form a wave therein.
Another object is to form a wave in human hair by inserting the tongue of a waving device beneath a lock of hair, and drawing the tongue upward between a pair of side frame members to form a wave in the hair.
In order to attain these objects ,there is provided, in accordance with one feature of the invention, a frame, which may be cut or stamped from a single piece of sheetI metal, the central portion thereof being cut away to leave two side members. Both ends of the frame are turned up to be at substantially right angles tothe side members, and the side members are curved to conform to the curvature of a normal human head. A central member or tongue is pivotally connected to one upturned end of the frame, the free end of the tongue being constructed to seat in an aperture or notch in the other upturned end of the frame.
These and other features of the invention, not specifically mentioned, will be more fully brought out in the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l, is a view in isometric perspective of a hair waving device made in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2, is a view in cross section of a Serial No. 39,696.
device similar to that illustrated in Figure` tion,.respectively, of an end of a frame,`
showing a tongue pivotally connected there.- to; and
Figure 4, is a view in isometric perspective of a portion of a head of human hair having waving devices inserted therein.
Referring to the drawings in detail, a frame A may be stamped from a single sheet of metal, the center portion l being cut away and the ends 2 and 3 upturned to be at substantially right angles with side members 4 and 5 of the frame. An aperture 5 is provided in upturned end 3 to provide a seat for a tongue B to be later described in detail. The side members 4 are curved longitudinally to conform to the shape of a human head, and are also arched transversely as shown in Figure 9..
The portion cut from the center of the frame A may be used to form tongue B, an end 6 of the tongue being bent to encircle the transverse portion of the upturned end 2 of the frame, to mount the tongue B pivotally thereon. The tongue is arched longitudinally to conform to the shape of a human head and is also arched transversely in a similar manner to side members 4. The free end 7 of the tongue is tapered to fit in the aperture 5 in the upturned end 3 of the frame. The tongue being cut from the center of the fra-me would normally ht too closely within the side frame members to permit a lock of hair to pass therebetween. However, by forming the frame and the tongue in a transverse arch the width of the opening intermediate the frame members is increased and the width of the tongue is reduced. This provides a clearance intermediate the members sufficient to permit a lock of hair to readily pass therebetween.
The device is intended to be used in the process known as water waving, wherein a lock of hair is first dampened, as by brushing it with a damp brush, forming a wave in the hair, and permitting the hair to dry while held in a waved position. Hair C is first moistened in a desired manner and the tongue B of the device inserted beneath a loclr of hair, as illust-rated by the lower waving device in Figure 4. The tongue, with the hair overlying it, is then brought up intermediate the side members 4 of the frame to the position shown by the upper waving device in Figure 4. The tapered end 7 of the tongue is then inserted in the aperture 5. The waving device may be left in the hair for a period siiiiicient to permit .the hair to dry, approximately fifteen to twenty-five minutes, depending upon the degree of dainpness of the hair, the condition of the atmosphere, and other causes. Upon removal of the waving device the hair remains in a waved condition.
That I claim is:
l. A hair waving device of the character described, comprising a frame `having a pair of longitudinally curved side members, upturned end portions extending radially outward from the curvature. of said side inembers, a tongue pivotally connected to one of said rip-turned end portions to swing d ownwardly intermediate said side members in spaced rela-tion therefrom7 and fastening means carried by the other of said rip-turned end portions to engage the tongue upon being drawn upwardly between the side members to hold a strand ofv hair looped about said tongue to form a wave therein.
2. A hair waving device of the characterl described, comprising a frame having a pair of longitudinally curved and transversely larched side members, upturned end portions described, comprising a frame having a paix.`
of longitudinally curved and transversely arched side members, upturned end `portions integral with the side portions, and a tongue pivotally connected to an end of the frame to hold the tongue kin upwardly spaced relation intermediate of the side members, andi having means to engage the opposite .upturned end to hold the parts in spaced relatioiito each other.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JOSEPHINE BRETTSCHNEIDER.
