Description

G. P. JEWETT.
Horse-Detaohing Apparatus;
No. 213,574. 7 Patented Mar. 25,1879.
ATTORNEY N-PEI'EHS. PHOTO-LHHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D O.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE P. JEVETT, OF WADLEY, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-DETACHING APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,574, dated March 25, 1879 application filed December 9, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, G. PIERCE JEWETT, of Wadley, in the county of J eiferson and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Detachin g Devices; and I do hereby declare that the followin g is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The figure in the drawing is a plan view of a single-tree having my improvements attached thereto.
This invention has relation to devices for detaching horses quickly from vehicles when the animals become unmanageable, and thereby place the occupantiu danger; and to that end it consists of improvements in the construction of the same, hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Both ends of the single-tree are provided with similar devices.
A is a single-tree of ordinary construction, the trace B being attached in the manner shown. A casting, O, is forked at its outer end to receive the lever D, which is pivoted to it, as shown. The inner end of the casting O has a"rectangular opening, in which is journaled the pulley c.
The shorter arm of the lever D is bent downward, and forms a journal for the roller. E. This roller is a little longer than the width of the trace, and is smaller in the center than at either end.
The longer arm of lever D is S-shaped, and to the end of it is connected a cord, F, which passes through the pulley c, and through a corresponding pulley, and terminates at the rear end of a lever, similar to D, at the other end of the single-tree. Another cord is attached to the cord F at its center, and terminates within reach of the driver.
The operation of the device is as follows: When from any cause it becomes necessary to detach the horse, the cord attached to the lever D is-drawn. The roller E is thrown outward against the trace B and forces it clear of the single-tree.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In a horse-detaching device, the frame or casting 0, provided with the lever D, having roller E, cord F, and pulley c, in combination with the single-tree A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEO. PIERCE JEWETT. Witnesses:
W. O. DAVIS, W. M. SPEIR.
