IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-DETACHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,361, dated October 23, 1877; application filed September 1, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN L. KELLUM, of Salem, (Maxwell Station P. 0.,) county of Franklin, and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Whiffletrees, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a rear view of a whiffletree to which my improvement has been applied. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same, partly in section to show the construction.

The object of this invention is to furnish whiffletrees which shall be so constructed that the horse may be instantly detached should he become frightened or otherwise unmanageable, which will enable the horses to be easily attached and detached, and which shall be simple in construction and reliable in use.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, A represents the Whittletree, to the ends of which are attached rods or pins B, to receive the ends of the tugs or traces. O are two iron straps or plates placed upon the rear side of the arm of the Whittletree A, and secured in place by screws or bolts D, which pass through short longitudinal slots 0 in said straps or plates, and into or through the said whiffletree A. Upon the outer ends of the straps or plates 0 are formed flanges c and hooks c. The flanges c extend across and fit upon the ends of the whiffletrees A, and have holes formed through them to receive the pins B, so that when the straps or plates 0 are moved outward, the flanges 0 may push the tugs or traces oi the pins B, and thus detach the horse. The hooks c are so formed that their forward ends may reach to, or nearly to, the pins B at their outer ends, to keep the tugs or traces from slipping off the said pins B while in use.
The rear sides of the arms of the whiffletree A have grooves a formed in them to receive the rubber bands or other springs E, the outer ends of which are attached to inwardly-projecting pins 0 secured to the straps or plates 0, and their inner ends are secured to pins a attached to the whiflletree A at the inner ends of the grooves a The springs E hold the straps G drawn inward.
In the straps or plates G are formed short longitudinal slots 0 to receive the inwardlyprojecting hooks, points, or pins f, formed upon or attached to the outer ends of the straps or bars F.
The inner ends of the straps or bars F are pivoted to the lever G upon the opposite sides of and equally distant from its pivot. The lever G is pivoted to the center of the rear side of the whiflletree A, and its upper end projects above said whiffletree, and has the end of a cord, H, attached to it. The cord H passes around a guide-pulley, I, pivoted to the whiffletree A, or to a bracket attached to said whiffletree, and extends back to the carriage, where it is secured in such a position that it may be conveniently reached and operated by the driver when required.
This device also enables the tugs or traces to be conveniently attached to and detached.

In case the device is applied to a pair of whiffletrees, the two levers G should be connected by a rod, and the cord H should be attached to the said rod.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with the lever G and straps F F, of the pin B and spring-held slide-bars O,
the latter being provided with end flanges c 1 0 as and for the purpose specified.
