Description
A. OHLSOIN. Horse-Detacher.
Patented May 18, 18. 80.
NZF'ETERS. FHOTD-UTHOGRAPKER. WASHINGTON. D. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW OHLSON, OF GANTRALL, ILLINOIS.
HORSE-DETACHERI SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 227,821, dated May 18, 1880. Application filed February 20, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW 011LsoN,o-f Gantrall, in the county of San gamon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Detachers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form 'a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a front elevation (upside down) of a double-tree embodying myinvention. l i g. 2 is a top or plan view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a rear elevation, upside down.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
This invention has relation to devices for the instantaneous detachment of the traces by which the team is hitched to a vehicle, and thus prevents runaway accidents; and it consists in the detailed construction and arrangement of operating parts of a device of this class, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the drawings, A is the double'tree, and B B the single-trees, which are pivoted upon each end of the double-tree by bolts to a, inserted through the eyes b b b b, as seen in Fig. 3, of brace-loops O 0, consisting each of a rod bent to overlap the middle of the single-tree and the end of the double-tree with their upper and under eyes I) I), through which bolt a is inserted. Each of the braceloops 0 is twisted to form an additional eye, I), 011 its back part, where it bears against the rear side, near the end of thedouble-tree, for
I the double purpose of preventing the brace from chafing or cutting into the wood of the tree and giving it sufficient spring or elasticity to hold the bolts to a firmly in their place.
The two single-trees being exactly alike in construction and operation, a description of one will suffice for both.
It is provided at each end with sliding bolts bolt D and a. parallel projecting perforated I arm, g, which receives the end of the trace bolt. Thus by withdrawingthe bolts the traces are released.
The withdrawal of the bolts is efi'ected by cords or chains h h, secured in the inner ends of the bolts, and passing over sheaves The chains are inserted through the eyes a a of the pivot-bolts a a, and fastened to thebent 1 arm E of a rod, E, hung in staples back of the double-tree and operated by a lever, F, and connecting cord or chain G, the end of which is within convenient reach of the driver.
By pulling cord G the bolts are withdrawn instantly and simultaneously from the traces in both single-trees, thus severing the connection between the runaway team and the vehicle.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination of the double-tree A, provided with the hinged rod E, having arms E E and lever F, bolts a a, having eyes a a, brace-loops 0, having eyes I) b I), and singletrees B B, provided each with sliding springbolts D D, sheaves M, and operating cords or chains h h, passing over said sheaves and inserted through the eyebolts a a, all constructed and combined to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein shown and described.
In testimony that. I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANDREI/V OHLSON.

DAVID G. JENs, R0131. COUNCIL.
