' Claims.
The invention relates to burning apparatus for combustible fluids such, for example, as fuel oil, and utilizing the kinetic energy of a gaseous medium such as air to effect atomization and mix- 5 ing, the mixture being discharged for ignition in a highly atomized state through a tip of the burner provided with suitable orifices.
A burner, somewhat similar to the burner forming the subject matter of the present invention,
and designed for mixing oil or other liquid. fuel with a gaseous medium in two stages. is disclosed in a prior U. 5i.v Patent #1495331 granted to applicants assignee; and the same embodies means for altering the physical characteristics of the flame. It is an object of the present invention, while retaining the feature of two-stage mixing of liquid fuel with gaseous medium, to provide adjustment means whereby a predetermined ratio of primary to secondary outlets for,
30 gaseous medium is maintained; and, within the limits of the burner capacity, between the oil or other liquid fuel and the gaseous medium to be mixed therewith under constant inlet pressure of the latter, so as to maintain a constant velocity of gaseous medium across the fuel delivery member outlets irrespective of the quantity of fuel delivered.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for effecting simultaneous adjustment of a valve supplying fuel to the novel burner and the means for adjusting the supply of gaseous medium to be mixed therewith in the burner.
In carrying out the invention, an elongated casing is provided at its tip with adelivery opening, the said casing being further provided with an opening for receiving a gaseous medium.
Mounted axially within the casing and terminat ing in proximity to its said delivery opening is a stationary nozzle member embodying circularly disposed radial outlets for delivery of fluid fuel;
and about these openings is located an axially adjustable sleeve having peripheral ports to admit the gaseous medium to the interior of said sleeve.
The latter is located between the casing and the outer end of the nozzle member, its periphery forming with the delivery end of the casing an annular and primary orifice, and its outer end being open and located in juxtaposition to the delivery opening of the casing.
Axial movement may be imparted to the said sleeve to vary the area of opening of the annular orifice; and this movement may be effected in accordance with the supply of fuel from a valve associated with the burner through intermediate 55 mechanism linking the valve and burner controls 1936, Serial No. 85.854 1 (Cl. 158-76) to each other. Within the sleeve a further annular and secondary orifice is formed about the stationary nozzlev member adjacent its radial outlets and through which gaseous medium under constant pressure is delivered to afford constant velocity of the gaseous medium across the fuel ports or radial outlets irrespective .of the position of the sleeve relative to. the nozzle and easing, whereby the volume of fuel flow, within the fuel capacity of the burner, may be varied without affecting the degree of atomization and at the same time maintaining a predetermined proportion of gaseous medium to fuel.
The nature of the invention, however, will best be understood when described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig.1 shows the novel -burnerand associated fuel valve in end elevation.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the burner and adjusting mechanism, with the associated fuel valve shown in elevation.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary vertical section illustrating a modification in the adjusting means for the burner.
Referring to the drawings, the burner is shown to consist of a suitable elongated casing or body having a longitudinally disposed chamber l0 into which the atomizing gaseous medium, as air under requisite pressure, is to be supplied. The casing is provided with a removable tip ll having the delivery outlet l2 located axially with respect to the casing.
Fitting coaxially within the body is the fuel supply nozzle l3 which extends from the rear of the casing to the outlet end thereof, terminating in a head it provided with radial outlets IS, the nozzle being bored axially through to these outlets and designed to connect, for example, through a pipe i6 or the like with a fuel supply valve ll which may be rigidly attached to the top of the burner casing, as indicated.
Intermediate the casing and nozzle member and axially adjustable therein is a sleeve 20 having peripheral openings 2| to admit air from the interior of the casing to the interior of said sleeve and about the nozzle outlets IS, the sleeve extending beyond said outlets and being provided with an outlet 22 for mixed fuel and air. The said sleeve outlet 22 flares toward the delivery outlet [2 of the casing and terminates in juxtaposition thereto. The inner surface of this sleeve provides a constricted annular portion or throat 23 aifording a secondary orifice about the neck of the nozzle, the surface immediately in advance of and succeeding said constricted portion flaring in opposite directions.
The periphery of the said sleeve, furthermore,
is separated from the casing and forms with the delivery end thereof a tapering annular or primary orifice 2| contacting toward the outlet l2,
which orifice may be varied in cross-sectional area in' accordance with axial adjustment of the said sleeve, which, tothis end, has a sliding on a trunnion Ill fixed to the body. To eflect its rotation, the collar carries a lower arm or lug 21 from which extends inwardly and parallel to the axis of oscillation of the collar a pin 25. This pin in turn fits into a correspondingly dis- "posed arm 29 projecting radially from a further collar 30 or indicator member bearing over a portion of its periphery graduations 3| located in proximity to an indicator point or finger 32 secured to the casing. Thereby the oscillation or angular movement of the handle 25 may conveniently be read to afford a measure of the amount of opening of the fuel supply valve I'I. Collar is fixed to the sleeve 20, as by means of a screw 33, so that rotation transmitted from the collar 26 through pin 28 and arm 29 will be correspondingly imparted to the said sleeve. The latter is to be advanced or retracted axially in conformity with such oscillation, which at the same time controls the volume of fuel supplied, as hereinbefore set forth. To this end, a helical slot is cut through a portion of the sleeve 20 about the trunnion Ill, and from the latter extends radially outwardly and into said slot a pin 36. By this expedient it becomes possible to advance and retract the sleeve without causing lateral displacement of the stem 25 which might be objectionable in the present embodiment, as the same is also to be connected with valve II to operate the valve simultaneously with the adjustment of the said sleeve 20.
' To eifect this oscillation of the sleeve in conformity with the oil supplied, as from valve H, the stem 40 of the latter may be connected to the stem 25 through a link 4| and arm 42, the latter being secured to the said stem 40. An ad justable swivel connection between thearm and link, as indicated by the screw 43, serves in the initial setting of the fuel valve. Operating handle 25 may be extended above the valve, and when oscillated will operate both the valve and the burner sleeve 20 to increase or decrease the supply of fuel from the former and to slide the end of the sleeve respectively away from or to ward the outlet l2 of the burner.
In Fig. 4 a modification is indicated in connection with the sliding or axial adjustment of the sleeve relatively to casing 48, and this modification relates more especially to an embodiment not involving simultaneous control of both the fuel valve and said sleeve position. Thus, there is no connection provided from the operating handle 41 to a fuel supply means. The collar 48 to which this handle is attached is, therefore, connected directly to the sleeve 45, as by means of a screw 49, to cause the sleeve to partake of its angular movement upon the trunnion 50. The sleeve, as in the previously described embodiment, is similarly provided with a eral openings for and the casing.'

A set screw 53 may be provided topass through the collar and sleeve and bear upon the periphery of trunnion 50 when the desired adjustment of the sleeve has been secured.
We claim: 7 v 1. A burner, comprising an elongated casing closed at the rear and open at the front to af ford a delivery opening, said casing being provided with an intermediate unrestricted inlet opening for a gaseous medium, a stationary nozgle member longitudinally disposed within the casing and having in proximity to the delivery opening radial outlets for delivery of liquid fuel, a sleeve adjustably mounted coaxially about the nozzle member with a portion intermediate the casing and outlets of said nozzle member spaced from both to afford passageways between the casing and said sleeve and between the latter and the nozzle member, said sleeve having peripheral openings for admission of the gaseous medium to' its-interior, the construction and arrangement thus providing for flow thereof through both passageways and in all positions of said sleeve about the nozzle member outlets, and the periphery of said sleeve at the delivery end of the casing'forming therewith an annular orifice for the discharge of the gaseous mediu'm flowing about the sleeve, and means to adjust axially the said sleeve relatively to the nozzle member outlets and the casing.

A burner, comprising an elongated casing closed at the rear and open at the front to afford a delivery'opening, said casing being providedwith an intermediate unrestricted inlet opening for a gaseous medium,'a stationary nozzle member longitudinally disposed within the casing and'having in proximity to the delivery opening radial outlets for delivery of liquid fuel, a sleeve adjustably mounted coaxially about the nozzle member with a portion intermediate the casing and outlets of said nozzle member spaced from both to afford passageways between the casing and said sleeve and between the latter and the nozzle member, said sleeve having periphadmission of the gaseous medium' to its interior, the construction and arrangement thus providing for flow. thereof through both passageways and in all positions of said sleeve about the nozzle member outlets, and the periphery of said sleeve at the delivery end of the casing being tapered and forming therewith an annular variable orifice for the discharge of the gaseous medium flowing about the sleeve,"and means to adjust axially the said sleeve relatively to the nozzle member outlets 3. A burner, comprising an elongated casing closed at the rear and open at' the front to afford a delivery opening, said casing being provided with an intermediate unrestricted inlet opening for a gaseous medium, a stationary nozzle member longitudinally disposed within the casing and having in proximity to the delivery opening radial outlets for deliveryof liquid fuel, a sleeve adjustably mounted coaxially about the nozzle member with a portion intermediate the casing and outlets of said nozzle member spaced from both to afford passageways between the casing and said sleeve'and between the latter and the nozzle member, said sleeve having -peripheral openings for admission of the gaseous medium to its interior, the construction and arrangement thus providing for flow thereof through both passageways and in all positions of said sleeve about the nozzle member outlets, and the periphery'of said sleeve at the delivery end ,of the casing forming therewith an annular orificev for the discharge of the gaseous medium flowing about the sleeve andv its inner wall forming with the outlet portion of the nozzle member a variable annular orifice, and means to adjust axially the said sleeve relatively to the nozzle member outlets and the casing.

A burner, comprising an elongated casing closed at the rear and open at the front to afford a delivery opening, said casing being provided with an intermediate unrestricted inlet opening for a gaseous medium, a stationary nozzle member longitudinally disposed within the casing and having in proximity to the delivery opening radial outlets for delivery of liquid fuel,
