The invention relates to mixer and burner apparatus suitable for the intimate mixture and combustion of various fluids, particularly as fuels in a gaseous, liquid, or even powderedsolid state, for example, as in the mixing, or
atomizing, of a combustible oil or gas or powdered fuel with air or steam or with a further combustible gas.
V The invention has for an object the provision of apparatus of this nature whereby, within the range of action of the same, a predetermined mechanical regulation of the mixer apparatus in a manner whereby the selected ratio'between the fluids is not changed throughout the range of variation of the total supply or output; also to permit of a change inthe initial supply of the one fluid to alter the characteristic of the discharge.
In carrying out the invention, for example as embodied in burner apparatus, there is combined with a suitable burner member having an adjustable discharge opening and means for varying the eflective area thereof in a mannerto afford a predetermined flow characteristic of the discharge of one fluid therethrough, a valve for supplying fuel to the discharge means, said valve being of a nature to afford a similar flow characteristic.
Provision is made, also, for manually establishing the desired port area ratio between the valve and the burner discharge openings, and to insure the maintenance of a constant pressure upon the fluids to be mixed, as in securing ample capacity in the medium supplying mains to substantially the point of use. Regulating means for two separate fluids are so controlled that a predeterminedratio between the fluids is constantly maintainedthroughout the range of operation of the apparatus; and the combination permits, also, of initially setting the flow of one of the fluids to aflord the desired volume, thereof. e
The nature of the invention, however, will best be understood when described in connection with the accompanying drawings. in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan-view of the novel apparatus: and Fig. 2 is an elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the apparatus with connecting head omitted; and e. .Flg. 4 is a transverse section thereof, 'takenon the line 4-4, Fig. 3 of the drawings, and looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring to the drawings, the burner memher is shown to consist of a suitable elongated casing or body having a longitudinally disposed 5 chamber in into which the atomizing gaseous medium, as air under requisite pressure, is to be supplied. The casing is provided with a removable tip ll having the delivery outlet I2 located axially with respect to the casing. 10
Fitting coaxially 'within the body is the fuel supply nozzle l3 which extends from the rear of the casing to the outlet end thereof,-terminating in a head It provided with circularly disposed radial outlets IS, the nozzle. being bored 15 axially to afford communication to these outlets'and designed to terminate at the opposite end in a head It or the like provided in its outer surface with a varying area valve port II in I communication with the bore of said nozzle. 20
Intermediate the casing and nozzle member and axially adjustable therein is a tubular mem-' ber 20 having peripheral openings 2| to admit air from the interior of the casing to the interior of said-tubular member and about the nozzle 25 V outlets ii, the tube extending beyond said outlets and being provided with an outlet 22' for mixed fuel and air. The said tube outlet 22 flares toward the delivery outlet I! of the casing and terminates in juxtaposition thereto. 3
The inner surface of this tube provides a constricted annular portion or throat 23 aifording a secondary orifice about the neck of the nozzle, the surface immediately in advance of and succeeding said constricted portion flaring in oppo- 35 site directions. The design of the orifice, together with a further air orifice hereinafter described, is such that a predetermined flow characteristic, for example a straight-line flow char-. acteristic, will be attained in the delivery of the 40 gaseous medium. a The periphery of the saidtube, furthermore, is separated from the casing and forms with the delivery end thereof a tapering annular or primary orifice 24 contracting toward the outlet 45 I2, which orifice may be varied in cross-sectional area in accordance with axial adjustment of the said tube, which, to this end, has a sliding fit at the rear portion of the casing and about the corresponding end of the nozzle member, or 50 rather an intermediate sleeve element 2U. Provision is made for axially displacing the tube it as through the angular movement about the longitudinal axis of the casing of rockable means such as an arm it extending radially from a connecting member or bracket 21 whose one arm 21' -is radially connected with the said sleeve.
' This bracket with rocking member is adapted to be secured, also, through a further radially disposed arm'll" of length equal-to that of the a the effective area of opening of the port beingdetermined by the position of said valve piece relatively thereto, which valve piece is shaped to aflord therewith a predetermined flow characteristic conforming to that of the other fluid. The
amount of fuel fed through the valve will thus be determined by the position of the operating handle or rocking member 26, fuel being introduced to the chamber 34 through a suitable connection 36 extending externally of the 'head It. The position of the said valve piece relative to port Il may be initially adjusted to the desired location 'by loosening the nut 28 and manually turning the head ll, which adjustment may be indicated on the scale 31 provided on cover 33. A further scale 38 cooperates with the arm 2! to indicate volume being discharged by the apparatus.
' With the angular movement imparted to the valve piece through turning of the spindle 2| by the member 26, which may be accomplished either manually or mechanically, provision is made to also correspondingly reciprocate the tube 20 in a mannerto vary the area of the primary orifice 24 in the same sense. For example, the sleeve 25 which is mounted intermediate thetube 20 and the casing I 0 at the rear end of said tube, has provided therein a peripheral longitudinal slot 40 extending inwardly from its inner edge and de- 40 signed to receive a pin 4| secured to said tube.
This pin extends also into a helical slot 42 of the casing so that if the-said sleeve be turned, the tube will be accordingly reciprocated axially of the nozzle member I3 and outlet 12, and will be displaced with respect to the said outlet to vary the area of opening of orifice ll.
Angular motion is communicated to the sleeve 2| by connecting the. same through radial arm 21' to the bracket 21 which eflects movement also of the valve spindle 20, so that both the valve and the tube will be simultaneously actuated for regu-. lating the volumes of .the two fluids supplied by the burner apparatus; and the proportion of the one to the other, as initially set, will be substantially maintained throughout the range of the burner as the operating member 20 is accordingly moved.
We claim:
1. Apparatus of the nature set forth, comprising a cylindrical casing having atone end a tubular conical discharge tip with axial outlet for fluid, said casing having connection with a source of fluid medium, a movable tube mounted coaxially in the casing, its one end aifording with the outlet thereof an annular discharge area, means rockably mounted on the casing" to oscillate about its longitudinal axis, together with mechanism including an element disposed radially of the longitudinal axis of the casing intermediate the rockable means and the movable tube to displace the "latter longitudinally for adjusting the eflective discharge area; a valve mounted at the opposite end of the casing, means for varying the eifective port area of the valve, said valve communicating Spindle 28 passes through a stufling-box 32' with the interior of said tube and with a further source of fluid supply; means including an element disposed radially of the longitudinal aids of the casing to transmit movement to the port varying means of the valve from said rockably mounted means to regulate the eflective port area of the valve simultaneously with the regulation of said annular discharge area and in the same sense, and adjusting means cooperating with said second radially disposed element and the valve to change selectively the relative effective area of said port with respect to said annular discharge area.
2. Apparatus of the nature set forth, comprising'a cylindrical casing having at one end a tubular conical discharge tip with axial outlet for fluid, said casing having connection with a source of fluid medium, a movable-tube mounted coaxi-.
. mounted at the opposite end of the casing; means for varying the effective port area'of the valve,
said valve communicating with the into... of said tube and with a further source of fluid supply; means including respective elements disposed radially of the longitudinal axis of the casing and connecting the valve with said sleeve to regulate the effective port area thereof simultaneously withv the regulation of said annular discharge area and in the same sense, means cooperating with one of theradially disposed elements to adjust the eflective port area of the valve and including 'a flanged spindle for rotating the latter, and a nut threaded over the outer end of the spindle, together with .an intermediate spring washer adapted to bear upon the end of one radially disposed element rotatably fitted to the spindle between its flange and the said nut.
3. Apparatus of the nature set forth, comprising a cylindrical casing having at one end a tubular conical discharge tip with axial outlet for fluid, said casing having connection-with a source of fluid medium, a movable tube mounted coaxially in the casing, its one end aflording with the outlet thereof an annular discharge area, a sleeve fitting over the end of the tube opposite its outlet end and between said tube and the casing, the sleeve having a longitudinal slot from its inner edge, a pin secured to the tube, passing through the slot of the sleeve and fltting a helical slot of the casing; a valve mounted at the opposite end of the casing, communicating with the interior of said tube and with a further source of fluid supply and provided with means for varying its efl'ective port area; a valve-operating spindle in the longitudinal axis of the casing; and bracket means including two arms oi equal length disposed radially of the longitudinal axis of the casing and respectively connected with the said spindle and with the said sleeve, and an. operating arm for rocking said bracketto regulate thereby simultaneously the said port area and the said annular discharge area and in the same sense.
