Definitions
- This invention proposes to provide means whereby, when a target is hit by a shot, the target will rotate, travel lengthwise of a screw, and give a reading on a scale, it being possible to locate shooters on opposite sides of the target, the target hits of a shooter on one side of the target reducing the score made by the target hits of a shooter on the opposite side of the target.
- Another object of the invention is to provide means for mounting resiliently the frame that carries the target, for two reasons; primarily to prevent the device from being overturned by a shot, and secondarily to facilitate the folding of the device for packing.

'7 Claims.
This invention proposes to provide means whereby, when a target is hit by a shot, the target will rotate, travel lengthwise of a screw, and give a reading on a scale, it being possible to locate shooters on opposite sides of the target, the target hits of a shooter on one side of the target reducing the score made by the target hits of a shooter on the opposite side of the target. Another object of the invention is to provide means for mounting resiliently the frame that carries the target, for two reasons; primarily to prevent the device from being overturned by a shot, and secondarily to facilitate the folding of the device for packing.
l5 Other objects will be made manifest as the description proceeds. A mechanic who keeps within the scope of what is claimed may make alterations Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Fig. 1 is an elevation with parts broken away, Fig. 2 is a vertical section, and Fig. 3 is an elevation of the target, parts being broken away.
'Ihe device includes an elongated plate-like base I,having thinned ends 2.
An inverted U-shaped frame 3 is provided. The frame 3 includes parallel vertical standards 4 connected near their upper ends by a cross rod 5.
The lower ends 6 of the standards 4 are at right angles to the length of the standards, and therefore the frame 3 stands yieldably but vertically on the ends 2 of the base I under the impulse of pull springs I located in grooves 8 in the standards 4, the upper ends of the pull springs being connected to the standards, and the lower ends of the pull springs being connected to the base I.
The ends of a horizontal scale plate 9 are secured in the grooves 8 of the standards 4. 40 Along its upper edge, the scale plate 9 has on each side a scale I 0 reading in opposite directions from a zero point I I, and the device in general is duplicated on both sides.
'I'he cross rod 5 carries a thread which may be formed in any desired way. In the interest of cheapness of manufacture, the thread may be a coiled spring I2, disposed about the cross rod 5, abutting at its ends against the standards 4 and held, within the post grooves 8, against rotation.
The cross rod 5 and its thread I2 extend through a transverse passage I4 in a target I5. The passage I4 is located nearer to the upper end of the target than to the lower end. The target I5 has bulls-eyes I6 on its opposite sides. The target I5 is supplied with a depending flexi- (Cl. .TIS-102.1)

A-latch I8 is vertically movable in a bore I9 in the upper edge of the target I5 and bears against the cross rod 5 under-the impulse of a pressure spring 2Q held in the bore I9 by a screw plug2l.
When the target I5 is hit by a shot, the target rotates about the cross rod 5, the latch I8 cooperates with the thread I2 of thecross rod, the target moves lengthwise of the cross rod and of the scale plate 9, and the index I'I on the target indicates a score on the scale IU. 'I'he spring 20 permits the latch I8 to yield under the effort of an operator, and therefore the target I5 can be set to the zero point I I of the scale I0 by a right line sliding movement.
Rules of play have nothing to do with a patent application, but it may be observed that squads of shooters may be located on opposite sides of the target I5, since the target has a bulls-eye I6 and a scale II) on each of its opposite surfaces.
The score of one squad of shooters will olset and reduce the score of the other squad of shooters, because the target I5 moves in opposite directions with respect to the scale I0, depending on which side of the target is hit by a shot.
The device is a light table game and therefore no secure mounting for the base I is desirable. The article, however, will not overturn when the target I5 is hit by a shot, because the standards 4 are connected yieldably and resiliently to the base I by the springs l, which serve to erect the frame 3 after the target I5 is hit by a shot, should the shot have considerable force.
No shooting-piece is shown, because I know that a gun or pistol and a target cannot be covered in one application for patent, and because I do not wish to be conned to any particular form of arm. It is suggested that a simple pistol (not shown) carrying a springactuated projectile connected to the pistol by a string, will answer the purpose.
Since the frame 3 is connected to the base I yieldably and hingedly by the springs 1 only, the frame can be folded into parallel relation to the base I for convenience in storage or shipment.
The game may terminate when the index II of the target I5 has reached any predetermined limit, whereupon the target I5 is run back to initial position, a new game being begun.
What is claimed is:
1. In a device of the class described a base, a frame yieldably mounted on the base, the upper portion of the frame being provided with a. rod, and a. target rotatably mounted on the rod, the target being held by gravity in a vertical operative position.
2. In a device of the class described, a base, a frame carried by the base, a rod carried by the upper portion of the frame, a two-faced target carried by the rod, the target being held by gravity in a vertical operative position, a twofaced scale member Wherewith the target cooperates, the scale being carried by the frame, below the target, and means for causing the target to travel along the rod, responsive to impact upon the target.
3. A device of the class described comprising a frame, a horizontal member carried by the frame and having a thread, a target journaled on said member' having means for engaging the thread, a scale member carried by the frame, the target having an index cooperating with the scale member, whereby when the target is hit by a shot it will be rotated and moved longitudinally of the scale member and the threaded member.
4. A device of the class described comprising a frame, a member carried by the frame having a thread, a target journaled on said member having means for engaging the thread, in combination with a scale member carried by the frame,
the target having an index cooperating with the scale member when the target is rotated by a shot and moved longitudinally of the scale member by the thread, said thread engaging means being yieldable under force applied Vby an operator to shift the target rapidly by right-line sliding movement to reset position.
5. A device of the class described comprising a frame, a horizontal member carried by the frame and having a thread, a target journaled on said member having means for engaging the thread, said target having bulls eyes on its opposite sides, enabling shooters to be located on opposite sides of the target, the target-hit of the shooter on one side moving the target in one direction, and the target-hit of the shooter on the opposite side moving the target in an opposite direction.
6. A device of the class described comprising a base, a frame, a target rotatably mounted on the frame, and means for connecting the frame resiliently With the base, said means being eiective to maintain the frame yieldably erected.
7. A device of the class described comprising a frame, a horizontal member carried by the frame and having a thread, a target journaled on said member and having means for engaging the thread, said means being yieldable under force applied by an operator, to shift the target rapidly by right-line sliding movement.
