2 Claims.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pistol holding devices and is of the general character disclosed in patent granted to J. R. Sander on October 13th, 1925,
Patent No. 1,557,339, and embodies improvements in the art thereover.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a pistol holding device that isI capable of attachment to an appropriate part of a trucky bus, aeroplane, motorcycle or other vehicle, it being understood however'V that the same may also be used in stores, banks, the offices of theatre cashiers, railway cars and the like, the holder being concealed from view with the exception of a locked door therefor that when opened permits automatic projection of the pistol handle into position for ready grasping by the user.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pistol holding device of the foregoing character wherein the tensioned support for the pistol is adapted to be latched within a casing with a closure door for the casing adapted when moved to its closed and locked position to release the tensicned support for the pistol for automatic 26 projection from the casing when the door is opened and into position for ready grasping for use.
With the above and other objects in view that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of l parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed.

While the pistol holding device may find use in many different arts, the same is illustrated as associated with the instrument board I0 of an automobile, the pistol holding device comprising a -10 casing I I of elongated construction and substantially rectangular in plan view with parallel side walls I2 connected by arched Vtop and bottom walls I3, the forward end of the board Ill being closed by an end wall I4 while the inner open end 16 of the casing has a frame I5 suitably anchored therein and carrying a closure door I6 having a spring hinge connection I1 with the frame I5 at one side thereof to effect automatic opening of the door when the latch and lock mechanism 20 associated therewith is released. ,D
A frame structure within the casing I I includes a pair of longitudinally extending rods I8 and i9 respectively arranged adjacent the top and bottom walls I3 of the casing, the inner ends of 25 the rods being anchored in the frame I5 While the outer or forward ends of the rods I8 and I9 are anchored in a spider frame 29 to brace the rods I8 and I9 and maintain them in parallel relation to each other.
A plate 2i curved in the plane thereof as shown in Figure 3 is slidably mounted upon the rods I8 and I9, the upper end of the plate 2| as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, terminating in a bar 22 projecting from opposite ends of the plate 2I and carrying 35 upon its upper side collars 23 slidable upon the rod I8. Collars 24 depend from the lower side of the plate 2l and are slidable on the lower rod I9.
A lubricated leather or fabric sleeve 25 surrounds each rod I9 for a certain length thereof 40 and is confined in position by means of the collars 23 and 24 to facilitate sliding movement of the plate 2l on the rods I8 and I9, the sleeve 25 being shown in section in Figure 'l as a sheet folded upon itself with laterally projecting side 45 edges 25a to facilitate the placement of a lubricant within the sleeve. A 4holster 26 of leather or other suitable material is carried by one side of the plate 2l With'the upper end of the holster riveted as at 21 to the bars 22 of the plate 2| 50 and as shown more clearly in Figure 1, the plate 2| adjacent the low-er end thereof carries an arm or bar 28 directed toward the open side of the casing I I that terminates in a plane substantially alined with the adjacent end of the bar 22 at the 55 upper end of the plate 2| for purposes presently to appear. A pistol is illustrated in Figure 1 as mounted within the holster 26 with the handle 29 disposed exteriorly of the holster and located adjacent the open end of the casing II.
The plate 2| is normally iniiuenced in a direction toward the open end of the casing II by spring devices including a coil spring 39 anchored at one end as at 3| to the upper side of the frame I5 at the open end of the casing I I while the other end of the spring 30 is anchored to a lug 32 Y projecting laterally of the end collar 23 as shown in Figure 3. A pair of coil springs 33 is anchored at their forward ends as at 34 to the lower side of the frame I5 while Vthe other ends ofthe springs 33 are anchored to lugs 35 projecting laterally of the end collar 24 as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3. Projecting movements of 'the plate 2| under influence of the springs 3|! and 33 is limited by the adjacent collars 23 and 24 on the upper and lower edges of the plate 2| moving into engagement with theabutment'collars 36 slidableA upon the rods I8 andIS with said collars 36 cushioned by the coil springs 31 surrounding the rods AI8 andv I9 between said collars 36 and the frame I5.
Latch devices are provided for holding the tensioned plate 2| in its retracted position within the casing I| while the door is in open position for the placement of a pistol in the holster 26 and said latch devices include a block 38 carried by the skeleton frame 20 adjacent the lower side of the casing II and the forward end of the lower rod I9, the block 38 having an arm 39 pivotally mounted at one end thereon as at 49 with the other end of the arm 39 longitudinally slotted as at 4| to receive a pin 42 carried by the adjacent end of an elongated latch rod 43, the opposite end of which projects through an opening 44 formed in a wall of the frame I5 at the open end of the casing II. Allatch shoulder 45 is formed on the upper side of the latch rod 43 adjacent the free end of the latter and is adapted for engagement with the wall 46 of the frame VI5 at the top of the opening 44 through which the adjacent end of the latch rod 43 extends. A latch shoulder 41 is also formed on the latch rod 43 adjacent the pivoted end thereof and is adapted to be engaged by a latch lug 48 projecting laterally of the plate 2|. The latch rod 43 is normally retained in its retracted position within the casing by means of the coil spring 49 attached at one end as at 59 to the spider frame 20 with the other end of the spring 49 attached as at 5| to the latch rod 43. As shown in Figure 2, a leaf spring 52 carried by the frame I5 in the open end of the casing I I is engaged With the latch rod 43 for normally positioning the latch shoulder 45 on the latch rod 43 for engagement withv the abutment wall 46 of the frame I5. f
When the closure door I6 of the casing II is open, as shown in Figure 4, a pistol isinserted in the holster 21 with the holster and plate 2| pushed into the casing II against the tension of the springs 39 and 33, the latch lug 48 on the plate 2| being moved into engagement with the abutment shoulder 41 on the latch rod 43.while the spring 52 engaged with the freeV end of the latch rod 43 positions the same so that the abutment shoulder will engage the wall 46 of theA frame I5, the pistol holster and plate being then conned within the casing, with the springs 39 and 33 tensioned so that when the latch rod'43 is released, the springs 39 and 33 automatically project the plate V2| and holster 26 toward the lock barrel 54.

When the door I6 is closed and latchedl in closed position, by mechanism to be presently described, a cam lug 53 projecting inwardly from the innerY face of the closure door I6 moves into engagement with the adjacent free end of the latch rod 43 to slightly push the same further into the casing II and to lower the free end of the latch rodto position the abutment shoulder 45 on the latch rod laterally of the abutment Wall 46 of the frame I5 as shown in Figure 2 so that when the 'closure door I6 is later opened, the plate 2| and holster 26 carrying the pistol are automatically projected through the door opening. With the door I6 in closed position, the cam 53 holds the latch rod 43 in its released position against the tension of the spring 52, the parts being so related that when the closure door I6 is opened, the .spring 52 will be uneffective for positioning the abutment shoulder 45 for engagement with the Wall 46but will permit the shouldered portion 45 of the latch rod to pass through the opening 44 in the frame I5. The bottom wall of the recess 58 is of arcuate formation to receive an upstanding arcuate lug 63 rising from the marginal edge of the inner face of the disk 52a and a finger 64 projecting laterally of the lock barrel 54 has a link connection 65 with the nger 62 so that when the lock barrel is moved to locked position, the free end of the arm 55 is moved toward the lock barrel for positioning the lug 63 in the recess 58 between the shoulders 59 and 66 with rotation of the disk by the handle 53a prevented. From the above detailed description of the invention, it is believed that the construction and operation thereof will at once be apparent, it being noted that when the closure door I6 is in open position, the plate 2|, holster 26 and pistol 29 are partially moved through the open end of the casing as illustrated by dotted lines in Fig, l. To conne the pistol 29 Within the casing Il, the plate 2| is slid into the casing on the guide rods I8 and I9 against the tension of the springs 30 and 33, the latch shoulder 41 on the latch rod 43 being engaged with the abutment 48 on the plate 2| while the latch shoulder 45 adjacent the free end of the latch rod 43 is engaged with the wall 46 of the frame l5, the spring 52 laterally shifting the free end of the latch rod 43 to accomplish such engagement. When the door |6 is closed against the tension of the spring hinge connection I1 therefor, the cam 53 upon the inner face of the door engages the adjacent free end of the latch rod 43 to laterally shift the same and also slightly move the latch rod further into the casing Il to position the latch shoulder 45 laterally of the abutment Wall 46 as shown in Fig. 2. The latch bolts 61 automatically engage the keepers 65 and operation of the lock barrel 54 by a key moves the free end of the arm 55 against the tension of the spring 51 for positioning the arcuate lug B3 in the bottom of the recess 58 to restrain the disk 52a from rotation by the handle 53a and thereby maintain the latch bolts 61 in locked engagement with their keepers 15. When it is desired to place the lock mechanism in set position for ready release and automatic projection of the pistol 29, the lock barrel 54 is rotate'd by means of a key and by means of the arm and link connection 64 and 65 between the lock barrel 54 and arm 55, the latter is shifted to displace the arcuate lug 63 from the bottom of the recess 58 in. said arm so that when the handle 53a is moved to rotate the disk 52a the arcuate lug 63 may move a distance controlled by the abutment shoulder 6| on the arm 55 and during which movement, the latch bolts 61 are retracted for disengagement from the keepers 15. When the door I6 is automatically opened by the spring hinge connection I1, the plate 2| together with the holster 26 and pistol 29 are automatically projected through the open end of the casing by means of the springs 30 and 33. When. the door I6 is closed the latch mechanism within the casing is shifted to a set position to permit automatic projection of the pistol when the closure door I6 is opened.
While there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:-
1. In a device of the character described, a casing, a closure door for the casing, a tensioned pistol support slidable in the casing, latch mechanism for retaining the support in the casing during placement of a pistol therein when the door is open and a part of the latch mechanism lying in thev path of closing movement of the door whereby the door relea'ses the latch mechanism when the door is moved to closed position for automatic projection of the holder and pistol when the door is thereafter opened.
2. In a device of the character described, a casing, a closure door for the casing, a tensioned pistol support slidable in the casing, latch mechanism for retaining the support in the casing during placement of a pistol therein` when the door is open including an elongated latch rod having a tensioned pivot-link mounting at one end adjacent the closed end of the casing, latch means for the latch rod intermediate the ends thereof and at the end adjacent the door respectively cooperating vvith the holder and casing, and means on the door for releasing the latch device at the end of the latch rod from the casing when the door is closed to-permit automatic projection of the holder when the door is opened.
