ASHLEY W. HOLLAND AND EDGAR N. MOKIMM, OF LATHROP, MISSDUBI.
IMPROVEMENT IN REVERSIBLE BRlDLE-BITS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 212,935, dated March 4, 1879 application filed January 14, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that we, ASHLEY W. HOLLAND and EDGAR N. MCKIMM, of Lathrop, in the county of Clinton and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Reversible Bridle-Bits, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a front view of one of our improved bits. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, taken through the lineman, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved bridle-bit which shall be so constructed that it may be used with either a hard-mouthed horse or a tender-mouthed horse by simply reversing it, and which shall be simple in construction and convenient in use.
The invention consists in a bit formed of the long straight bar, grooved longitudinally in its end parts, and the two short bars hinged at their inner ends in the grooves of the long bar, corrugated upon their outer sides, and provided with bars or rings, either or both, at their outer ends, as hereinafter fully described.
A is a straight bar, which forms the body of the bit. The end parts of the barA aregroovedlongitudinally upon one side, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and in the inner parts of the said grooves are pivoted or, hinged the inner ends of the short bars B. The inner ends of the short bars 13 are beveled off, to strike against the bottoms of the grooves and serve as stops to limit the inward movement of the outer ends of the said bars. The outer sides of the bars B are rounded off, and are corrugated transversely, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
To the outer ends of the bars B are hinged the bars 0 and the rein-rings D, or the rings without the bars, or the bars without the rings, as may be desired.
When the bit is to be used with a hardmouthed horse it is inserted inthe mouth with the open sides of the grooves in the bit-barA inward. When thus arranged pulling upon the reins will draw the corrugated sides of the short bars B against the lower jaw of the horse, so that he can be readily controlled.
When the bit is to be used with a. tendermouthed horse it is inserted in his mouth with the open sides of the grooves in the straight bar A forward, in which case pulling upon the reins will only draw the smooth side of the said bar A against the lower jaw of thehorse, so that he may be controlled and guided without hurting his mouth.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A bit formed of the long straight bar A, grooved longitudinally in its end parts, and the two short bars B, hinged at their inner ends in the grooves of the bar A, corrugated upon their outer sides and provided 'with bars and rings, either or both, at their outer ends, substantially as herein shown and described.
