COMBINED CANE AND STAND Filed Dec. 14, 1956 Patented Aug. 23, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE COMBINED CANE AND STAND Philip Y. K.-Hwat, Baltimore, Md.
Application December 14, 1936, Serial No. 115,862
10 Claims.
The invention has for anobject to provide a novel combined cane and stand structure capable of being normally carried as a cane and, at will, adjusted to a condition for supporting the user in standing position at anelevation 50 like structure, but the sections may be adjusted above the ground, the better to enable the user to observe parades, athletic events or the like.
In its more detailed nature the invention resides in the provision of a combined caneand stand structure comprising a cane body or shank portion and a handle portion, said shank portion being formed of articulated sections capable of being relatively positioned to provide a base or supporting section, a horizontal foot support section, and a vertical or stand support section. Another object of the invention is to provide a structure of the character stated in which the base section includes a plurality of supporting legs and means for automatically spreading and positioning the legs upon adjustment of the structure to its stand supporting condition.
Another object of the invention is to provide, in a structure of the character stated, a handle portion vertically adjustable to suit the needs of use of various users.
With these and other objects in view which will more fully appear, the nature of the invention will be more clearly understood by'iollowing the description, the appended claims, and the several views illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:'--
Figure 1 is a side 'elevatiomillustrating the invention adjusted for being carried as a cane.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 illustrating the structure adjusted for use as a supporting stand.
Figure 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 33 on Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a horizontal section taken on line 4-4 on Figure 1.
the
Figure 5 is a horizontal section taken onthe line 5-5 on Figure 1.
V Figure 6 is a rear elevation. 1 My combined cane and stand support comprises a base section A, a foot support section B and a stand support section C. When in their normal end-to-end or aligned relation, shown in Figure 1, the sections together form a caneto the condition shown in Figure 2 in which the structure can be used as a stand support for comfortably supporting a user in an upright position elevated above the ground. I
The base section includes a body portion 5 connected by a knee joint 6 to the foot support section B. Hinged to the lower extremity of the body portion, as at I, is a plurality of leg members 8 shaped at their lower ends as at 9 to meet, when collapsed, in a perfect solid end cir-' cle, and having their upper ends cut away at the inner faces, as at III, to provide a central space II.
A slide guide I2 is formed in the body portion 5, and a slide member I3 is slidably mounted in said guide and link-connected, as at I4, with the foot support section B. A plunger member I5 is movable with the slide member and extends into the space II between the upper ends of the legs Where it is link-connected, as at It, with the leg members 8 for a purpose that will soon become apparent.
The section B comprises a body portion I! which is preferably rectangular in cross section and connected by a knee joint I8 with the section A. An elongated foot support platform member I9 is pivotally secured to the body member as at 20 so that it may be shifted to present its longitudinal. axis in line with the aligned sections when positioned as shown in Figure 1, or transversely as shown in Figure 2 when the sections have been positioned in stand supporting relation.
Section C likewise includes a body member 2! preferably secured, as at 22, to the lower extremity of a tubular stand support member 23. A handle member 24 is telescopically, or vertically-adjustably mounted in the upper end of the member 23, as at 25, any suitable means 26 being provided for securing the handle member in various degrees of projection from the end of said member.
Normally the structure may be carried as a cane with the sections A, B and C aligned as shown in Figure 1. Should the user be desirous of obtaining a point of vantage at a parade, athletic event or the like, where it is found difficult to see because of massed crowds, it is only necessary to adjust or reposition the sections of the structure as shown in Figure 2 whereupon the user can place the base upon a good ground It Will be obvious that as the sections A and,
B are moved relatively between the positions shown respectively in Figures 1 and 2, the link connection It will impart sliding movement in one direction or the other to the slide member I3, and this movement will be transmitted to the plunger I5 and links I6, causing the leg members to move to their extended positions or from their extended to their collapsed positions depending upon the direction of said relative moment.
.It is to be understood that the component parts of my improved device may be constructed of various materials and in any suitable dimensions, also that the details of construction may be variously changed without departing from the spirit of the invention as particularly pointed out in the appended claims;
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a handle portion, and a shank portion, said shank portion being composed of articulated sections adjustable to position for providing a supporting base section, a horizontal foot support section, and a vertical hand support section.
2.
