' 2 Claims. (01.312-186) This invention relates to-what may be termeda deskcompact, the device 'beingin the nature of a case or miniature cabinet for use upon a desk for holding writing materials, ink bottles, pens, pencils, and other material. 1

The invention has for'its object, among others, to provide a device of this character which may be cheaply and economically constructed; will provide a convenient holder for writing instrumentalities, and for holding letters, papers, and the like.

The invention together with its objects. and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:-

Figure '7 is a perspective view of a slide member hereinafter more fully referred to.

Referring to the drawings by reference numerals it will be seen that in the preferred embodiment thereof the case or compact comprises a bottom wall 5, end walls 6, top wall 1, front Wall 8, and rear wall 9.

Walls 8 and 9 are hinged to the bottom wall 5 as at Hllii for vertical swinging movement to opened and closed position.

The walls 8 and 9 are provided with suitable fastening elements H complemental to spring keeper elements l2 provided therefor on the top wall 1 at the front and rear edges of said wall.

Adjacent opposite ends thereof the case or compact is provided with vertical partitions l3 and horizontal partitions M forming with the end walls 6 and top wall 1 pidgeon holes I5 in which are removably positioned shelves It.

To support the shelves It the partitions l3 and end walls 6 are provided with grooves I! that receiv the edges of the shelves I6 in a manner to permit the shelves to be readily removed when it is desired to thoroughly clean the pigeon holes l5.

. Between the pigeon holes I5 there is arranged afile-drawer I! and the latter at opposite side edges thereof is provided with guide ribs l8 that are slidably accommodated on guide rails l9 suitably provided on the partitions l3 in slightly spaced relation to the top wall I.

. Asshown in Figure 3 the drawer I1 is provided with a plurality of partitions 20 providing file spaces 2|. For certain of the file spaces 2l there is provided an inclined false bottom 22, bottom 22 serving to facilitate the placing of envelopes and the like in the compartment. At the front end thereof the drawer I7 is provided with a knob 23.

Provided within the bottom of the case or compact, at each end thereof, are a pair of spaced guide rails 24--25 between which is secured a cross cleat 26 acting as a guide for a rod 27. On one. end of the rod 2! isa crosshead 2'8 that has reducedend portions 29 working in guide slots 30 provided therefor inthe rails 24, 25. The cross dates between the rails of the respective pairs of rails 24, 25 ink wells 32, one of which may be used to contain ink of one color and the other of which may be used for containing ink of another color. The wells 32 are normally urged outwardly to a tilted or inclined position shown in Figures 3 and 4 through the medium of the spring-pressed crossheads 28, and to accommodate the wells 32 in the inclined position mentioned, and to serve to maintain the wells in such a position the front side or closure member 8 for the case is provided at the corners thereof adjacent the hinged edge of the member 8 with trays 33 that are suitably recessed as at 34 to accommodate the wells. 32 in a manner best shown in Figure 4.

A blotter or other suitable absorbing pad 35 covers the inner face of the closure member 8.

Also carried by the closure member 8 is a combination rack 36.

Rack 36 comprises a pair of opposed laterally spaced rack bars 31 which are suitably notched as at 38 to accommodate pencils, pens, and the like, and at their inner ends the rack bars 31 are provided with hook-like formations 39 which serve to receive the pencils or pens on the rack 31 when the member 8 is swung upwardly to a closing position.

Also, pivotally supported between the forward ends of the bars 31 as at Ml is a tray 4| for receiving paper clips, rubber bands, etc.

As will be clear from a study of Figure 3 when the member 8 is swung vertically upwardly to a closed position the tray 4| will be accommodated within the case or compact forwardly of the drawer I! while the wells, 32 against the action of the spring-pressed crosshead 28, will be forced inwardly of the case or compact between the rails 24, of the respective pairs of rails.

The closure member 8, as previously explained, is releasably secured in closed position through the medium of the complemental latch members ll, l2.

It will also be appreciated that with the member 9 in the position shown in Figure 3 access to the case or compact at the rear side thereof may be had. 1

Also completing the assembly is a stamp rack indicated generally by the reference 4|.

The rack 4| comprises a standard or post 42 to which are secured, and from which extend laterally bars or arms 43 each of which is provided with a series of slots or notches 44 for accommodating the handle portions 45 of rubber stamps '46 as suggested in Figure 1.

At one end thereof the post 42 of the stamp rack is reduced and squared as at 41 to flt snugly within a complementa'rily shaped opening 48 provided therefor in the top wall 1 of the case. Also secured to the top wall 1 of the case is a socket plate 49 that registers with the opening 48 and accommodates the lower end portion of the post 42 as clearly shown in Figure 3.

When not in use the rack 4| is accommodated within the case beneath the drawer l1 and compartment I5 and in this connection it will be seen that the post 42 of the rack, when the latter is placed within the case, is accommodated between a pair of guide bars or cleats 41 suitably secured to the bottom wall 5 of the case and extending from the front to the rear side of the case in slightly spaced relation and at opposite sides of the transverse center of the bottom wall 5.

Also, to prevent marring the polished surface of the desk or other support on which the case is placed, the latter is provided with suitable feet or legs 48 of rubber or other suitable cushion material.

From the above it will be seen that I have provided a desk case or compact which will be found especially desirable for use in conjunction with flat top desks, serving as it does as a receptacle for pens, pencils, ink, as well as a file for letters, cards, etc.

It is thought that a clear understanding of the construction, utility and advantages of an invention of this character will be had without a more detailed description.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:-

l. A desk compact comprising a case having at opposite sides thereof hinged closure members whereby access to the case from either of said two sides may be had, said case being provided internally with shelf-equipped compartments and with a drawer slidably supported between said compartments, a pair of fixed guide bars mounted in the bottom of said case for slidably accomm'odating an inkwell between one end thereof, a spring-pressed slide operating between said guide bars and engageable with the ink-well for ejecting the same outwardly with respect to the case incidental to a movement of one of said hinged members to an open position, and a stop element carried by said last-named hinged member to be engaged by the inkwell when moved outwardly of the casing.

2. A desk compact comprising a casing having an open front, a closure member hinged on said casing for opening and closing the front thereof and adapted to assume a horizontal position when opened, a stop plate secured on said member and having a notch providing an inclined face and a straight face, spaced guides in said casing to loosely receive therebetween an inkwell, a cross head mounted for a limited sliding movement on the guides to contact the inkwell, and spring means acting on the cross head to urge the latter in a direction to slide the inkwell onto the stop plate and in engagement with the straight and inclined faces thereof on the closure member moving into an open position.
