CABINET FOR DESK IMPLEMEN TS.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GoNzALo DE LA TORRE, citizen of the United Mexican States, and resident of Mexico city, Federal District, Mexico, (whose post-otlice address is Calle 2, de la Santa Veracruz 43, Mexico city, Federal District, Mexico,) have invented new' and useful Improvements in Cabinets for Desk Implements, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in cabinets for portable use, adapted to hold the materials and the utensils used in writing as for instance, paper, envelops, en and ink and the like so arranged that a l of the materials and utensils may be held in a relatively small space, making an easily portable cabinet.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved cabinet open; Fig. 2 is a similar view on a reduced scale of the cabinet closed; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the drawers; Fig. 4 is a similar view of the front cover; Fig. 5 is a par tial perspective view of a portion of the interior of the cabinet; Fig. 6 is a similar View of the top cover; Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the upper drawer; and, Fig. 8 is a longitudinal vertical section of the cabinet.

The present embodiment of the invention comprises a box or casing 1 having feet 2 for supporting the said casing with its bottom out of contact with the supporting surface. The lower part of the cabinet is adapted to contain a plurality of drawers, and is provided with guideways 3 and at for receiving the drawers 5 and 6, each drawer having a handle 7 at its front end, for convenience in manipulating the same.

The upper drawer 5 (Fig. 3) is divided by longitudinal vertical partitions 8 into a plurality of longer compartments at each side of the said drawer, and the central portion of the drawer is divided by longitudinal and transverse partitions 9 and 10 into a plurality of small compartments. A sliding cover 11 is rovided for closing or covering a portion of the compartments at the front of the drawer, the said cover being a plain board which slides in a guideway on the inner face of the front of the drawer, and in another guideway on the partitions.

with the side of the drawer, so that it will not interfere with the withdrawal of the drawer. It will be noted from an inspection of Fig. 3, that the drawer 5 is provided with one compartment that extends the full length thereof at one side, while the compartments covered by the cover 11 extend transversely of the drawer. The guideways for the said cover 11 are under-cut, as shown. The compartments may be used for rulers, pencils, pen holders, pens, stamps or the like, and the upper surface of the cover 11 may be used as a support upon which to place letters during sealing and stamping, or upon which to perform operations of like nature.

The drawer 6 in the lower guidewz is a plain drawer without partitions 0 any character, and may be used for any desired purposes. A long narrow container or drawer 12 is arranged above the drawer 5 and at the center of the cabinet, the said container or drawer sliding through an opening 13 in the front of the cabinet. Above the guideways 3 and 4c, the front of the cabinet is offset inwardly, as indicated at 14t in Figs. 1, 2 and 8, and the container or drawer 12 slides over or above the surface 14 which is above the guideway 3, at the oil'- set end of the cabinet.

The container 12 is divided into a plurality of compartments by transverse partitions 15, and a cover 16 is hinged to one side of the said container. A small rectangular trough or tray 17 is arranged at the front of the container and this portion of the container that carries the tray projects outside of the cabinet when the container is in place.

Handles 18 are provided on the container below the trough or tray 17, for convenience in withdrawing the said container, the handles being formed by cutting the side walls of the container. The compartments in the said container 12 are especially adapted for containing stamps, and a sponge moistener may be placed in the trough or tray 17. A suitable latch 15) is provided at the rear end of the container 12 for holding it in place.

The guideway 20 for the drawer 12 is formed by a pair of laterally spaced parallel vertical plates 21, connected at approximately their center by means of a transverse horizontal plate 22. A plate 23 is hinged to the rear of the cabinet, as shown at 24. on the outer side of each of the plates 21, and each of the said plates is provided on its upper face with a plurality of racks 25. Each of the plates 21 is cut away near its rear end to form a series of teeth 26, and a latch 27 is pivoted at 28 to the under face of each of the plates 23, the free end of the latch engaging the teeth 26, to hold the plate 23 in adjusted position, as indicated in Fig. 1. A button 29 is mounted to slide in a slot 30 near the inner front edge of the plate 23, and each button is connected to the adjacent pawl or latch 27 by means of a rod 31. It will be evident that by sliding the button in the slot, the latch or pawl connected thereto may be engaged with different teeth of the series 26, to hold the said plate in adjusted position. The said plates 23 when in lowered posit-ion rest upon the upper edges of the plates 21, and the racks 25 may be used for any desired purpose. That portion of the cabinet above the guideway 3 at the offset portion of the cabinet, and designated by the reference numeral 14, is continuous to the rear of the cabinet, forming a cover for the upper guideway 3, for the drawer 5, and at each side of the said portion 14 a frame 32 is arranged, each frame being substantially rectangular and adapted to receive an ink stand or the like. The said frames are arranged on each side of the space occupied by the container 12 when in place. Each of the frames is provided with an opening 33 at its front.

A stand 34 is arranged between the plates 21 at their rear ends, and the said stand is provided at each side edge with racks 35, the said racks being adapted for holding pencils or the like. The space at the outer side of each of the plat-es 21, and the space between the said plates above the plate 22, may be used for any desired purpose, as for instance mucilage bottles, perforators or the like, and the racks on the upper faces of the said plates are adapted for holding rubber stamps, as for instance dating stamps or the like. The stand 34 may be utilized for holding a book, slate, calendar pad or other memoranda.

It will be noted from an inspection of Fig. 1, that a pair of guideways 36 is provided at each side of the rear end of the cabinet, the said guideways being vertical and oppositely arranged. The sides of the cabinet are also provided with guideways 37 in the shape of grooves at their upper edges, and the cover 38 shown in Fig. 6 is adapted to be received in either set of the guideways. The said cover is provided at each side with a laterally ext-ending flange 39for engaging the guideways, and with a handle 40 on its outer face for convenience in manipulating the same. The said cover may be engaged with the guideways 37, as shown in Fig. 2, or with the guideways 36, as shown in Figs. 1 and 8. The guideways 37 extend to the rear of the cabinet, while the flanges-39: are of lesser length than the cover. Said cover 38 is also provided near its front with an extension 41, and the side edges of the cover at the extension are notched, as shown at 42, for a purpose to be presently described. The cover is also provided with a button or handle 43 at the offset portion, as shown more particularly in Fig. 6, for convenience in drawing the said cover upward when the cover is in the position of Figs. 1 and 8.

A guideway 44 in the form of a bar having undercut side walls is arranged at'the front of the cabinet, and a trough or holder 45 is provided with a transverse groove 46 having under-cut side walls for engaging the said guide-way. The said tray or holder is provided with a plurality of compartments, formed by longitudinal partitions 46 and the front and rear wall and the partitions for their upper edges being notched, as shown at 47, the said notches being in alinement transversely. This tray or holder 45 is directly above the tray 17, and the said tray or holder 45 may be removed when desired, and may be placed within the cabinet. A cover 48 is also provided for the ofiset portion at the front of the cabinet, the said cover being shown more particularly in Fig. 4 The said cover 48 is approximately triangular in cross section, the outer face, however, being rounded, as shown in Figs. 4 and 2. At each end, the said cover is provided with handles 49 for convenience in manipulating the same, and under-cut ribs 50 are arranged at each side of the front 'of the offset portion, for engaging the slots at the ends of the said cover 48 to hold it in place on the offset portion. Other'undercut ribs 51 similar to the ribs 50 are arranged at one side of the cabinet and the cover 48 may be supported at the side of the offset portion when desired. The said.

cover 48 may also be placed at the rear of the cabinet, as shown in Figs. 1 and 8, or may be placed in dotted line position of Fig. 8, with the rear edges thereof engaging the notches 42. is in position on the ribs 50, the frames 32 and the tray 17 are covered. The tray holder 45 must first be removed before the cover 48 is placed in position.

WVhen the cabinet is in the position shown in Fig. 2, and it is desired to open the same, the cover 48 is first removed by lifting it directly upward. The cover 38 is then drawn forwardly until the ribs or flanges 39 are disengaged from the guideways 37, afterward the said cover may be dropped into position at the rear end of the cabinet,

When the cover 48 as indicated at 52, in order that the stand 34 may be swung forwardly without interfering with the said cover.

I claim:

1. In a device of the character specified, a cabinet having a plurality of guide ways at its bottom, and a drawer in each guide way, a central guide way above the lowermost guide ways, a drawer in the said guide ways a plate provided with racks at each side 0 the said guide Ways, means for supporting the plates in elevated position, a handle for operating each of the said plates, and a connection between each handle and the supporting means for releasing the said supporting means.

2. In a device of the character specified, a cabinet provided with a central guideway and a drawer in the guideway, a plate at each side of the guideway, means for supporting each of the plates in elevated position, a handle slidably connected with each plate, and a connection between each handle and the supporting means of the plate for releasing the said supporting means.

3. A device of the character specified, comprising a cabinet having the upper portion of its front end offset inwardly, a cover for closing the top of the cabinet, the cabinet having guideways at its top and having other guideways at its rear end, the cover having ribs for engaging the guideways to support the said cover at the rear end or in place on top of the cabinet, and a second cover fitting in the offset portion at the front end and removable therefrom.
