Description
J. R.NELSON. Burial-Gasket.
No. 212,565. Patented Feb. 25,1879.
N.PETERS. PHOTd-LITMDGFAPHER. WASHWGTON, D O.
UNITED STATES JOHN R. NELSON, OF
BURLINGTON, IO WA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BURlAL-CASKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 212,565, dated February 25, 1879; application filed March 9, 1878.
Tovall whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN R. NELSON, of the city of Burlington, in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burial- Oaskets, of which the following is a specification:
My improvement consists in providing a peculiarly-shaped rim-piece of metal to fit over and bind the upper edge of the wooden body, and also to receive a closely-fitting lug cast upon the metal rim-piece of the cover, and in securing the cover to the body by means of screws passing through the cover and rimpiece into the wooden body of the casket.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the casket, with a corner of the lid broken away. Fig. 2 is a View of the inverted cover, and Fig. 3 a transverse vertical section through the casket.
The bodyA of the casket is formed of wood, the sides, ends, and bottom being joined together in any well-known manner, and is bound around its lower edge by an electroplated metallic band, B, that serves as a trimming, and also helps to secure the sides and the bottom of the body firmly together. A rim-piece, 0, formed of sheet metal, H-shaped, forming a gutter above and also below the connectingweb 0, rests upon the top of the body and fits over its inner and outer edges at c c, forming a gutter around the rim of the body, with beveled walls, making the upper gutter wider at the top than at the bottom thereof. The rim-piece is secured to the body by screws passing through the web 0 of the gutter, that hold it firmly in place. The lower gutter of the rim-piece, overlapping the upper edges of the body, serves to strengthen the joints and bind the side pieces securely together. The top or cover of the casket I make of cast-iron, in one piece, and am thereby enabled to secure various advantages. A tapering rib, d, of exact shape and dimensions to fit snugly into the gutter of the rim-piece, may thus be cast upon the cover, the face of which may be planed to form a more perfect joint upon the bottom of the gutter. y
The edge alone of the cover may be made of cast metal when formed with a bead to fit into the guttered rim-piece without departing from this portion of my invention.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a burial-casket,the double-guttered metal rim-piece O, fitting over the upper edge of a metal plate of the cover, formed with a rib, d, cast upon it, to fit the upper gutter of the rimpiece and receive the securing-screws, which pass through the cover and web of the rimpicce into the body of the coffin.
JOHN R. NELSON.
