DOLLS EYE Filed May 5, 1934 mmuum INVENTOR Zlewfily m BY W W ATTORNEY Patented Aug. 2, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Ohlbaum & Son, Inc.
, New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application May 5, 1934, Serial No. 724,052
2 Claims.
This invention relates to dolls eyes. It is particularly directed to a dolls eye adapted to roll within the eye socket of a dolls head.
An object of this invention is to provide a neat, compact and strong dolls eye construction, which shall be comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, comprisefew and simple parts, and which shall nevertheless be practical and eflicient to a high degree.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible embodiments of this invention,
Fig. 1 is a sectional, elevational view of the dolls eye construction embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of the structure shown in Fig. 1, with a part broken away to show the interior construction;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the structure shown in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a rear elevational view thereof.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, lll designates a dolls eye embodying the invention, here shown for the purpose of illustration, in the form of a dolls eye adapted to be rotatably mounted within the eye socket of a dolls head.
The dolls eye may be mounted within a dolls head for rotation within the eye socket of the dolls head in any suitable manner, for example, as shown in my co-pending application, Serial No. 684,163, filed August 8th, 1933. Said dolls eye l0 comprises a substantially semispherical shell ll made of thin sheet material, such as metal, and may be formed with diametrically disposed parallel rearwardly extending ears l0a adapted to be perforated or formed with any suitable openings for receiving the usual axle employed in mounting the dolls eye within the head. The front face of said dolls eye may be suitably colored and formed with a representation of an iris Ila, substantially centrally disposed with respect to said shell ll. Said shell I I may be formed with an elongated, transverse, inwardly indented portion I2, disposed above the iris Hot and substantially in a plane parallel to the horizontal diameter of said shell. The indented portion l2 thus forms a channel, recess or pocket for the purpose hereinafter appearing.
The dolls eye I0 is provided with an eyelash member I! comprising an elongated strip to which there is attached a plurality of eyelashes l8, extending from said strip in the same direction. In attaching the eyelash member I! to the dolls eye, the strip portion is placed within the recess formed by the indented portion [2 and cemented or attached in place with any suitable glue, adhesive or cement.
There is further provided an eyelid member [3 comprising a part spherical piece of metal or other suitable material concentrically fitted over the shell I l and having a lower edge l3a located beneath the indented portion l2 for covering the strip of the eyelash member IT. The member l3 may be attached to the shell by means of glue or cement interposed between said members and also by an eyelet l5 preferably disposed adjacent the rear edge I31) of said member 13 and at the mid-section thereof. The eyelet is preferably flattened to the outer surface of the member 13 whereby the dolls eye may smoothly roll within the eye socket. The member l3- thus clamps the eyelash member in position for firmly attaching the same to the shell II and covers the channel I2 making for a neat and durable construction.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is Well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing, is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A dolls eye comprising a substantially semispherical shell having the representation of an iris on the outer surface thereof, said shell being indented above said iris, an eyelash member comprising an elongated strip to which there are attached a plurality of hairs, said strip being received within the recess formed by the indented portion, and attached therein by adhesive, and a part spherical eyelid member fitted on said shell and covering said indented portion and said strip, and an eyelet attaching said eyelid member to said shell.
2. A dolls eye comprising a substantially semispherical shell having the representation of an iris on the outer surface thereof, said shell being indented above said iris, an eyelash member comprising an elongated strip to which there are attached, a plurality of hairs, said strip being received within the recess formed by the indented portion, and attached therein by adhesive, 2.
part spherical eyelid member fitted on said shell and covering said indented portion and said strip, an eyelet attaching said eyelid member to said shell, and adhesive received between the said eyelid member and said shell.
