This invention relates to window construction v and has special reference to a preassembled unit ready for installation within the frame structure of a building from the interior thereof.
The principal object is to provide a combination of combined principal and auxiliary window frame, the auxiliary frame, carrying the window sash, being swingable or otherwise adjustably attached to the principal frame, and the latter is ultimately fixed in the building structure.
Another object is to provide a window structure that will permit of all adjustment, application, cleansing, etc., of storm window or screen as wellas the cleansing and caring of the window itself from the interior of the building.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will apr in the following description thereof.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, and wherein like reference characters indicate like parts:
Figure l is an elevation of one of the improved window units from the interior thereof and illustrating the window sashes partly open, but the auxiliary frame in closed position.
Figure 2 is a transverse section of Figure 1, however illustrating the auxiliary window frame in opened position.
' Figure 3 is an enlarged section of one modified form of one side oi the auxiliary frame.

i represents the lambs of the window frame proper which carries the complete and finished lower sill i as well as the top jamb d, all of these being inclined and converging outwardly in respect to the unit so that freedom is provided for the action of the auxiliary window without jeopardizing the tightness of the joint between it and the principal window frame, though the j ambs t of the auxiliary frame carrying the window sash are formed as shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, necessitating the sashes being of different widths and their edges also being inclined to coincide with that of the lambs d; the lowermost sash being illustrated at 5 and the uppermost sash at 6. 1
In this construction, as seen in Figure 2 of the drawings, I have provided T-shaped metal weather strips illustrated at i with the viewof tightening the joint between the sash and the jambs as v well as the various stops, and thus dispense with the necessity of weights to counteract the gravi tatlng eflect of the sash.
The principal frame structure carries the outer trim l of the window and the inner edge of which projects inwardly of the inner face of the jambs I providing a corner between it and the jamb and in which is installed the sponge rubber or other suitable gasket 9 extending along both sides and across the top thereof. Outwardly of this gasket installation I have shown the edges of the trim as being stepped as at l2 for the reception of the storm or screen sash, it preferably being removably carried by the narrow trim l I of the auxiliary frame, and which attachment to the auxiliary frame may be accomplished as by screws, hooks, or any other suitable means.
It is to be noted that the sill it carried by the auxiliary frame surmounts the sill 2 of the main frame, permitting of the inner auxiliary sill of the window as indicated at it being installed beneath the sill 2 and thus provide ample clearance between the upper surface of said auxiliary sill and the lower portion of the swinging auxiliary frame. It will also be noted in the preferred construction, of the device I have illustrated the straps, for example, of the hinges i5 as being mortised into and extending inwardly and engaging both the inner trim it of the principal frame and the jamb i, there being a. similar installation of the locking member if covering both the Jamie and the edge of the trim i6 so as to result in as sturdy and substantial unit as possible for the purpose. Thus this unit,
having the full length of outer sill 2 attached thereto, may readily be placed within the wall of a building from the interior thereof without engaging the studs ill of the wall of the building, as only the inner trim of the unit extends laterally to a greater width than the space intermediate of the studding, but inasmuch as the jambs of the principal frame are sufficient in length to provide room for the sheathing of the building as shown at it and the lath and plaster finish til of the interior, a secure and weather tight installation is readily accomplished.
In Figure 3 is illustrated a modified form of sash carrying frame in that the side jambs ii of this frame are disposed at right angles to the sash carried therein. In this frame the sashes 22 and 23 areof the same width, and the inclined outer jamb 2 of this type of frame is spacedsufllciently from the jamb 2! to provide vertical channels 25 and 26 for-.the weights 2i and 28 respectively for the window sash and avoid the "necessity of friction stops, as previously described, these weights being hung and functioning identically with that in common practice, and there may be other modifications that would bespeak practicability of the invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
From the foregoing it is evident that I have devised an exceedingly simple and practical construction which avoids the necessity of any attendance being given same from the exterior of the building, and which installation thus overcomes the very dangerous practice of washing or otherwise caring for windows from the exterior of a building, which results in so many accidental deaths and injuries to human lives.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A preassembled window unit for installation within the frame structure of a building from the interior, thereof comprising in combination a principal frame structure and an auxiliary sash carrying structure hingedly carried by said principal structure and characterized by having means intermediate of said structures PETER DELICH.
