' i 3. Claims. 1 j a The invention relates to improvements in door or window frames. One of the objects of the invention is the provision of a formed strip of metal or other sheet material strong in tension so constructed as to be adapted for rapid installation, functioning to close the counterbalancing weight-well in the case of a window frame bracing the frame from the studding on that "side of the frame and constituting a holder for the lathing material, such as wooden lath: or wallboard, where it adjoins the stile. Another object is the utilization of sheet material means for sealing the joint between the inner wall and the stile to prevent cold air from entering'there in the winter time and to prevent theadmission of dust or soot-laden air which would soil the surface of the wall adjacent the frame.
Other objects and features of novelty will appear as I proceed with the description of that embodiment of the invention which, for the purposes of the present application, I have illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a fragmental elevational view of one side of a window frame and the adjacent portion of a building wall illustrating an embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
In the drawing a window jamb or side stile constituting part of a window frame is shown at l0. Suitably connected with the outer edge of stile I0 there is a blind stop ll. [2 and [3 are wall studs. The outer part of the wall may be of any standard construction, and as illustrated herein consists of sheathing l4, building paper l5 and siding [6. The lower sash ll of the window is arranged to slide between a parting strip l8 secured to stile Ill and a front stop l9 also suitably secured to the stile. One side only of the frame is illustrated, it being understood that the other side may be identical therewith except for rights and lefts. In the case of a window frame the space between stile l0 and wall stud l2 1 may serve as a well in which counterbalancing weights 2| are accommodated.
On one side adjacent its inner edge stile I0 is preferably provided with a rabbet 22 to constitute a seat for a formed strip of sheet metal or other sheet material strong in tension. This strip may be said to be F-shaped in cross-section, the top portion 23 of the F being considerably extended so as to bridge the space 20 and overlie at least a part of the stud l2. Wooden lath, expanded metal or other material for the same purpose could be substituted of course. This lathing material is pressed into the space behind flange 26 and is then secured to the studding by suitable means such as nails 3L Thereafter one or more layers of plaster 32 are applied to the lathing to present a surface flush with the inner surface of stile ill and the rebent edge between portions 24 and 25 of the strip. The holes 9 are spaced two or three inches apart while the screws 2'! are spaced about six inches apart, the holes between screws serving as anchors or keys for the plaster.
A good joint is thereby obtained between the inner wall and the stile Ill. However the joint may be concealed if desired by a finish molding 33 secured to the stile by nails 34 and overlapping somewhat the bent edge of the strip and its joint with the plaster 32.
The formed strip herein disclosed is strong in tension, and being employed on both sides of the frame, ties the same firmly to the studding. The frame is thus well braced. The joint between the inner wall and the frame is also thoroughly sealed, and the lathing material is securely attached to the stile. Furthermore the mounting of the formed strip is quickly and easily effected.
While the rabbet 22 is desirable as locating accurately the right angle portion of the strip and providing a firm seat for the same, it may be omitted in some cases, in which event the right angle portion 24' of the strip would lie against gamma the side stile I0, its front edge being caused to lie flush with the front surface of the stile.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A frame for a window or the like, comprising a side stile, a wall stud cooperating therewith and spaced therefrom to provide a well for counterbalancing weights, a strip of sheet material strong in tension connected with said wall stud and extending to said stile for closing the inner side of said well, said sheet material having a right angle portion attached to said stile and a return bend flush with the inner surface of the stile terminating in a flange parallel with the first mentioned portion of said strip and spaced therefrom to receive lathing material, said flange being spaced from the line of the bend a distance corresponding to the proposed thickness of a plaster coating, and from the main portion of said sheet material a distance corresponding to the thickness of said lathing material whereby the said lathing material may be caused to extend into the angle of said sheet material and may be fastened to said stud, thereby reenforcing that part of the sheet material which extends across said well.
2. A frame for a window or the like, comprising a side stile, a wall stud cooperating therewith and spaced therefrom to provide a well for counterbalancing weights, a strip of sheet material strong in tension connected with said wall stud and extending to said stile for closing the inner side of said well, said sheet materia1 having a right angle portion attached to said stile and a return bend flush with the inner surface of the stile terminating in a flange parallel with the first mentioned portion of said strip and spaced therefrom to receive lathing materia1, said flange being spaced from the line of the bend a distance corresponding to the proposed thickness of a plaster coating, and from the main portion of said sheet material a distance corresponding to the thickness of said lathing material, said stile being rabbeted to receive the said right angle portion of said strip.
3. A frame for a window or the like, comprising a side stile, a wall stud cooperating therewith and spaced therefrom to provide a well for counterbalancing weights, a strip of sheet material strong in tension connected with said wall stud and extending to said stile for closing the inner side of said well, said sheet material having a right angle portion attached to said stile and a return bend flush with the inner surface of the stile terminating in a flange parallel with the first mentioned portion of said strip and spaced therefrom to receive lathing material, said flange being spaced from the line of the bend a distance corresponding to the proposed thickness of a plaster coating, and from the main portion of said sheet material a distance corresponding to the thickness of said lathing material and a vertical molding secured to the inner surface of the stile overlapping said return bend.
