Description
' ATTACHMENT F OR DRINKING VESSELS I Filed May. 21, 1937 ATTORNEYfi Patented Ma 3, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,116,418 I ATTACHMENT FOR DRINKING VESSELS Willard w. Smithson, Norfolk, Va. Application May 21, 1937, Serial No. 144,055
1 Claim.
This invention relates to attachments for drinking vessels, and its general object is to provide a lip shield that is primarily designed for use with a drinking glass for disposal about the rim thereof, to render the same sanitary, in that the shield is in the form of a ring, to cover the entire periphery of the rim, and extends interi'orly and exteriorly of the glass for a portion of the wall thereof, thereby making it impossible for the lips of the user to contact the glass while drinking the contents, with the result my shield will prevent spread of disease as will be apparent.
A further object is to provide a lip shield for drinking vessels, that can be easily and expeditiously applied and removed with respect thereto, will not interfere with drinking the entire contents thereof, and is made from some very inexpensive material such as waxed paper or the like, to be discarded after use.
Another object is to provide a,lip shield of the character set forth, that is-simple in construction, and, extremely eiflcient in use and service.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be here- Y inafter fully described, illustrated in theaccomof one form of panying drawing and specifically pointed out-in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure l is a view illustrating the application like, but of course it will be understood that it can be applied ,to any kind of drinking vessel,
and is made from any material suitable for the The shield in the form as shown in Figures 1 to 1 inclusive, is preferably made from a single strip of waxed paper folded as shown in Figures 3 and 4 to provide pleats I, and is thence shaped in channel ring formation to provide a bodyincluding 'an annular rim receiving portion 2 having outer and. inner flanges} and 4 respecmy attachment to a drinking tively depending therefrom, for disposal about the outer and inner surfaces of the wall of the glass for a portion thereof below the rim, as
' clearly shown in Figure 2.
The outer flange is shown as being wider than the inner flange, and the outer flange likewise preferably has the lower portion thereof outwardly flared as at 5, to facilitate the application of the attachment to the glass, as will be apparent.
.- outwardly flared portion 5, to enable easy application of the attachment to the glass, as well as set up a binding fit therewith, to prevent accidental removal therefrom.
In Figure 5 I have illustrated a slightly modified form of the attachment which is likewise preferably made from a single strip of material the annular rim receiving portion, inner and outer flanges and the outwardly flared portion for the outer flange, as shown.
While my attachment can be manually applied to glasses and the like, I preferably provide a dispensing apparatus for applying the same so that the attachment is not touched by the hands until it is removed from the glass.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood'that changes may be made in the construction and'in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within'the scope of the appended claim. What I claim is:
An attachment for a drinking glass comprising a waxed paper channeled ring like body ineluding-a rim receiving portion, inner and outer flanges depending from the rim receiving por-' tion and cooperating therewith for disposal about the rim portion of the glass to provide a lip shield therefor, the outer flange havingan outwardly flared lower end, and said body being pleated transversely throughout the circumference there- 5.
of to set up a resilient action for fitting association with the glass.
WILLARD W. SMITHSON.
