NZPETERS. PHOWLHHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WILBER PEGK, OF MAOOMB, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT INYHANGINGS FOR FARM-GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 211,585, dated January 21, 1879; application filed November 11, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILBER PEOK, of Macomb, in the county of McDonough and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hangings for Farm-Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in which my invention is shown in perspective, the post being cut away to more fully show my improvement.
The object of this invention is to provide a hanging for farm or other gates that is simple and cheaply constructed, and efficient in operation; and its novelty consists in suitable cleats, pivoted at their lower ends to the gate, the upper ends of the cleats pivoted to a swivel-joint at the top of the post, in combination with an adjustable weight for keeping the gate evenly balanced.
In the drawing, A represents the base; B, the gate, which is made in the usual manner, except the top rail, which extends back a sufficient distance, so that the weight y, when adjusted to the proper place, will evenly balance the gate. The weight g is held in the proper place by means of a bolt passing through the weight and through one of the series of holes in the rail, which are for the purpose of getting the proper adjustment of the weight. a
a represent two cleats, the lower ends of which, by means of the bolt 01, are loosely attached to the lower rail of the gate B. The upper ends of the cleats are loosely pivoted to the swivel O, which passes loosely through. the cap d, and is held to its place by means of a pin passing through the round part above the cap d, which allows the gate to turn to any required position.
When the gate is to be opened it is run back out of such fastenings as may be arranged at the front of the gate, then turned around parallel with the roadway, as shown in dotted lines. The gate being evenly balanced between the cleats a a to the lower rail makes it so easy to operate that a child can open and close a large farm-gate with ease.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim. as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The suspension of the gate by rods or chains attached to a swivel-support above the gate, and attached at their lower ends to the lower rail of the gate, by virtue of which 'the gate is more easily withdrawn from the latch-post and turned parallel with the road, substantially as set forth.
WILBER PEUK.
