SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 606,502, dated June 28, 1898. Application filed JanuarylZ, 1898- Serial No. 666,420. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARRIE D. BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nicholasville, in the county of J assamine and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Iin provements in Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved form of gate which may be opened or closed from either side of the gate-openin g and which when opened orclosed will be held securely.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for regulating the pressure upon the gate to hold it in its open or closed position.
The invention consists of a swinging gate, a toggle-lever pivoted at one end to a support and at its other end to the gate, an adjustable weight upon one of the sections of said togglelever, and connections between one of said sections and a pair of operating-levers extending out upon opposite sides of the gateopening.
The invention also consists in other details of construction, combinations of parts,and arran gements of instrumentalities which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved gate and the parts connected thereto. Fig.- 2 is adetail perspective View of one of the brackets in which the operating-levers are mounted.

The gate 1 and the post 2, upon which it is mounted to swing, are both of the usual form of construction. Located in line with the post 2, on the same side of the roadway, but upon opposite sides of the gate-opening, are posts 3 and 4, respectively, having fulcrumed in the upper ends thereof operating-levers 5 6, each having a cord 7 upon its outer free end, by means of which it may be moved upon its pivotal connection with the post, and connecting through chains or cords S with a bar 9, as clearly shown.

The said levers have secured to them bra-ckets 10, consisting of a flat base portion which bears against the under side of said levers, upwardly-extending flanges upon opposite ends, and a loop or eye through which the pivot-pin passes. r
The mechanism I provide for holding the gate in its open or closed position consists of a toggle-lever 11, made up of two sections 12 and 13, the lower end of the section 12 being fulcrumed to a post or support 14 and having an elongated slot 15 in its free end. The lower end of the bar {J is flexibly connected to the section 12 by means of a ring or loop 16. The other section 13 of the toggle-lever is pivoted at one end to the gate 1 and at its opposite end to the section 12 at a point a short distance from the free end of said section 12, the same fitting within the elongated slot 15 at a point near the lower end thereof and adapted to be engaged bythe end of said slot. By reason "of the fact that'the'section 13 is pivoted to the section 12 withinthe slot 15 and at a short distance from the free end of the section 12 it will beobserved that a stop will be provided for limiting the outward movement of the two sections of the toggle- Mounted upon the section 12 is a weight 17, provided with a thumb-screw 18, by means of which said weight may be adjusted at any point desired upon said section.
The operation of my device is as follows: When the gate is closed, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the sections of the togglelever 11 are in their extended positions-that is, they lie in substantially a straight line. To open the gate, one or the other of the operating-levers 5and 6 is depressed by pulling down upon the cord 7, raising the inner free end thereof, and through the cord or chain 8 and bar 9 the lower section 12 of the togglelever 11 is elevated, drawing with it the other section 13 and the gate which is connected thereto. When the section 12 passes beyond its dead-center or vertical line, the weight 17 acts to throw the gate over into its open position. When open, it will be difficult, if not impossible, for the gate to be closed without raising the section 12 of the toggle-lever in the manner just described. A similar operation to that above referred to will cause the gate to be restored to its normal closed position.
By reason of the fact that the Weight 17 is adjustable upon the section 12 of the togglelever I am enabled to regulate the degree of tension or force exerted upon the gate to hold it in its open position. It will be readily understood that if the weight 17 is moved down to a point adjacent to the pivotal connection of the section 12 with the post or support 14 the pressure exerted by said Weight will be much less than it is when said Weight is lo cated at a point near the upper end of said section. This is a material point of advantage, as my invention is designed to be used as an attachment to gates already in use, and as the sizes of the gates will vary it is necessary to provide some means whereby the force exerted thereon maybe regulated.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is The combination with a swinging gate, of a toggle-lever made up of two sections, one 25 of which is pivoted at its lower end to a stationary point, and is. provided with an e1on-' gated slot in its opposite end, and the other is pivoted at one end to the gate and at its opposite end to the first section at a point a 0 short distance from the end of the slot therein, so that the end of said slot forms a stop, an adjustable weight upon one of said sections, operating-levers fulcrumed in posts located upon opposite sides of the gateway, and 3 5 connections between the free end of said operating-levers and one end of one of the toggle-lever sections, as and for the purpose set forth.
