TU N ITED GEORGE A. COLVIN, OF ARAGO, OREGON.
GATE.
7 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 12, 1907.
Application filed March 4 1907. Serial No. 360.388.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, GEORGE A. CoLvIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arago, in the county of Coos, State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descripin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention has reference to swinging gates, and it aims to provide a simple and readily 0 erated device of that class in which the gate proper is l movable between a pair of posts, one of which carries a lever to which the gate is pivoted, the lever itself being operated through the medium of a rocking frame, movement of which latter in one direction will effect the opening of the gate, and in the opposite direction, its closing.
With the above and other ends in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination, and I arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, specifically claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which like parts are designated by corresponding reference numerals in the Of the said drawings-Figure 1 is a front view of the present invention, showing the gate in closed positionv Fig. 3 Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail I Fig. 2 is a view taken at right-angles to Fig. 1. is a top plan view of Fig. 1. view of the rocking frame. the operating lever.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the reference numerals 7 and 8 designate a pair of gate posts of any ordinary construction, between which the Fig. 5 is a similar view of This gate is hinged at its upper end to the post 8 as at 10, and at its lower end is provided with a hook 11, which extends through an opening formed through one arm of a lever 12, the central portion of which is flared collar-wise, as at 13, to fit around a reduced portion of said post. The opposite arm 15 I of the lever 12 carries a roller movable between a pair of spaced bars 16, which form the lower member of a rocking frame 17, the upper member 18 of which is pivoted to the post 8, at 2.1, at a point a slight distance above the top rail of the gate. The two members of the frame are connected by a rope or cable 19, Whose opposite ends are made fast to the ends 01' the member 18, the said cable passing around a pair of spools or rollers 20, carried by the straps which connect the opposite ends of the bars 16, the cable being further connected intermediate the spools 20 to the roller carried by the arm 15 of the lever 12. g The member 18 of the rocking frame is further providedwith a U-shaped strap 22, upon which an actuating weight 23 is slidably mounted. To this weight the lower ends of a pair of cables 24 and 25 are contion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled nected, the former being led first over a pulley 26, disposed at the upper end of the post 8, then over a pulley 28 carried at the upper end of the post 7, and finally over a pulley 29 carried by a bracket 30, secured to the upper end of a supplemental post 31, disposed a slight distance in front of the post 7. The cable 25 is, in like manner, passed over a pulley 27, mounted upon the post 8, adjacent the pulley 26, and then over a pulley 32 carried by a bracket 33, secured to the upper end of a second supplemental post 34, which is disposed in the rear of the post 8, the posts 31 and 34 being located upon opposite sides of the gate 9, so that the latter in being opened or closed, may be operated from either side.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that in opening the gate, it is only necessary to apply a downward pull to either of the cables 24 and 25, when the rocking frame will be tilted upwardly and caused to swing upon its pivot 21. Such movement of the rocking frame will cause the roller mounted on the arm 15 of the lever 12 to travel between the spaced bars 16, until it contacts with one or the other of the straps which connect the ends of said bars, when the lever will be swung in, a horizontal plane carrying the gate with it into open position. It will likewise be apparent that as soon as the downward pull upon the operating cable ceases, the weight will slide downwardly upon the light portion of the yoke 22, to the opposite end thereof. In closing the gate, downward pull is exerted upon the other cable, thus tilting the weight end of the yoke upward and causing the rocking frame to swing correspondingly, thus reversing the movement of the lever 12 which thus returns the gate to its normal or closed position. It will be seen, therefore, that one cable is used in opening the gate, and the other in closing it, the gate, when once opened, remaining in such position until the other cable is operated. 5
Owing to the position of the supplemental posts 31 and 24 upon opposite sides of the gate, it will be readily apparent that the latter may be operated with equal facility from either side through the corresponding cable, the weight lying at one end or the other of its yoke and tilting the rocking frame accordingly.
Each of the operating cables preferably terminates in a grip or handle portion 37.
Modifications and changes may obviously be made within the scope of the appended claims, as it is not intended that the invention be limited .to the exact details of construction shown and described.
What is claimed is 1. The combination of a pair of posts; a lever pivoted intermediate its ends to one of said posts; a gate directly connected with one end of said lever; a rocking member carried by said post and connected with the opposite end of said lover; a member slidably mounted on said rocking member; and separate means connected with said sliding member for positively effecting the movement of said rocking member in one direction or the other to open and close the gate.
2. The combination of a pair of posts; a gate movable between said posts; a lever pivoted to one of said posts and connected at one end to said gate; a rocking member carried by said last mentioned post and operatively connected with the opposite end of said lever; a member slidably mounted on said rocking member; and separate means disposed on opposite sides of the gate and con-.
nected with said sliding member for positively effecting the movement of said rocking member in one direction or the other, to open or close the gate.
3. The combination of a pair of gate posts; a gate to cause said lever to open and close said gate.
4. The combination of a pair of gate posts; a gate hinged at its upper end to one of said posts; a horizontally movable lever carried by said post and connected at one end to the lower end of said gate; a rocking frame comprising an upper member pivoted to said post, a lower member including a pair of spaced bars, and'a flexible connection between said upper and lower member, the
opposite end of said lever having a portion slidably en gaged between said spaced bars; and separate means connected to the upper member of said frame for rocking the same in one direction or the other, to cause said lever to open and close said gate.
5. The combination of a pair of gate-posts; a gate hinged at its upper end to one of said posts; a horizontally movable lever carried by said post and connected at one end to the lower end of said gate, a rocking frame comprising an upper member pivoted to said post, a lower member including a pair of spaced bars, and a flexible connection between said upper and lower member, the opposite end of said lever having a portion slidably engaged between said spaced bars; slidably mounted means disposed on opposite sides of the gate and connected with said sliding member for tilting said frame in one direction or the other, to cause said lever to open to swing the gate inwardly or outwardly into open position, and to close the same.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE A. COLVIN.
