Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 193.777. dated July 31, 1877; application filed May 19,1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES F. READ,-of Portland, in the county of Ionia and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use'the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked there on, which form a part of this specification, and in wh'ich Figure l isa side view of my improved gate. Fig. 2 is a similar view thereof, broken away, showing the mechanism for vertically adjust ing and retaining the gate in an elevated po sition; and Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of the adjusting and retaining socket upon the lower end of the gate-post.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters.
This invention relates to a certain improvement in gates, the object of which is to enable the same to be elevated to clear temporary obstructions; and it consists in hanging the gate by means of sockets having frames or loops, and a pin or stud, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, A refers to a gate of ordinary construction, supported, preferably, in an upright slotted post, a, upon rollers a ajournaled therein to permit of endwise movement. B B are sockets, one of which receives the lower end of the post a, and the other clasps the upper end of the post by which the gate is hinged or pivoted to the said post.
The sockets B B are provided with frames I or eyes b N, connected thereto by arms b of a rectangularorother shape, which are slipped upon the hinge-post a. By means of the eyes or frames b the gate can be vertically adjusted, raised or lowered, as occasion may require.
The lower eye or frame 12 is arranged at an obtuse angle to its socket B, by which it will be observed from Fig. 1 and 2, the said eye or frame is caused to bind against the hinge-post, and thus assist in retaining the gate in position thereon. Projecting downwardly, and also at an obtuse angle from the lower inner side of the frame or eye W, is a pin or stud, 12 which, as the gate is vertically adjusted, enters any one of aseries of apertures, d d, in the hingepost 0, in order to retain the gate in an ele-, vated position, and at any desired elevation.
The gate is provided with a slide or latch, e, to fasten it to the gate-post f. This device is extremely simple, inexpensive, and easily constructed.
