s claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a combination cabinet having a replace and dinette set therein.
The modern trend towards conserving space is well exemplified by `this decorative fireplace which may also serve as a dinette when desired.
An object of the invention is the provision of a hollow fireplace having a fire bed in the center of the bottom thereof and panels at the sides and of the dinette are normally housed and may be extended as needed.
Still further vthe invention contemplates an arrangement wherein the replace has a top center panel which may be opened to expose a table extendible and adapted to be used in conjunction with benches extendible from the side panels.
Still further the invention proposes a novel arrangement for constructing the extendible table of sections, and a provision for automatically latching these sections against accidental folding.
Another object of the invention is the construction of a device as mentioned which is simple and durable and which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention,
`and of the objects and advantages thereof, ref-4 eren'ce will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims i'n which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompany drawings forming a material part of this disclosurer- Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of a combination dinette and replace constructed to this invention.
according Fig. 2 is a perspective view of Fig. l'but illustrating the dinette in operative position.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1 with aschematic showing of the table extended.
of Fig. 1..
e line 1-#1 Fig. 8 is a sectional view taken on the line 8-8 of Fig. 6.
Fig.9 is an enlarged detail View 0i' a portion 0fv Fig. 6.
tendible benches I3' are mounted in the space 10V behind said side panels I3.
The benches I 3' consist of said panel portions I3, the same 'side panels before referred to, and supporting legs I5 and I6.. 'Ihe legs l5 are mounted at the outer ends and about the middie of the panels 'I3 and are normally held at right angles thereto by supporting arms Il, such as is usually used to hold similar parts. The legs I6 are equipped with support elements I8 such as rollers, which engage tracks I9 from the 2o sides of compartments arranged behind said side panels. These tracks (see Fig. 4) extend in a curve from the bottoms to the tops of the compartments.
'I'he compartments are formed by transverse 25 partitions 2| and 22 dividing the interior of the fireplace. The tracks I9 are mounted respectively upon the sides of these partitions and the inner face of the side walls of* the fireplace.
The panel I2 is supported by several hinges 30 23 at its bottom edge so as to be pivotable to an opened position as clearly shown in Fig. 2. When opened, it is possible to extend the table. The table consists oi' a rear tabletop section Il' hingedly connected 'with a front table top sec- 35 tion Mb. A supporting leg 25 is hingedly mounted to the outer end of the table topv and is held at right angles thereto by pivoted arms 26. The details of these arms will not be given as they are generally known in the furniture art.' Within 40 the side compartments there are shelves 21 which may be used to store objects.
An 'automatic means is provided for latching the sections Il* and Mb of the table top into extended positions automatically when the table 5 is opened. This means consists oi' a bolt 30 iixedly mounted on a stem 3| which is slidably mounted through a washerwhich is iixediy mounted in the section u. The bolt so is sud-- ably mounted in the sectionll, and in extended position is adapted to engage in a keeper opening 3l in the edge of the front table section Il. A coaxial spring 32 is mounted on the stem 3| vand acts between the bolt 30 and the washer'll' to u urge the bolt 30 forward to* engage in the keeper 34.
A pin 35 projects from the stem 3| and engages a slot 36 in the rack 33. The rear end of the rack 33 meshes with a pinion 31 rotatively supported on the table top section I4". This pinion is much wider than the width of the rack so as to have an extending portion. This extending portion meshes with a rack 38 mounted in the section, I 4B at right angles to the rack 33. The rack 38 is urged laterally by a spring 39 coaxially Vthereon acting against acollar 40 on the rack and a portion of the table top I4,
The pin 35 engages the slot 36 to allow the bolt 30 to bewithdrawn from the keeper 34 by the rearward movement of the rack 33.
A support element or roller 4I is mounted upon the extended end of the rack 38. This roller 4I engages in a vertical track element 42 mounted upon the partition 2|. The other side of the table section I4a is provided with a supporting element or roller 4I engaging in a vertical track 42 mounted upon the partition 22. These tracks 42 and 42 extend downwards behind the fire bed Il, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 and also horizontally at I2b for holding the table when in open position. The arrangement is such that the table top may be moved into the compartment behind the fire bed. One of tracks 42 has an enlarged portion 42a (see Fig. 8) at its top end so that the spring 33 may move the rack 38 when the table top is in the extended position.
The operation of the device is as follows:-
Fig. 2 shows the extended position of the dinette. In this position the fireplace may be used as a dinette. When it is desired to fold the dinette, it is merely necessary to lift up the inner ends of the bench seats I3 to a position in which the bench seats are vertical and disposed into the open sides of the side walls of the fireplace and form the panels I3. Fig. 4 shows the bench seats in the closed position, the seat portions thereof then constituting the side panels I3. The side arms I3 straddle the shelf 21 as clearly shown in Fig. 5.
Friction is depended upon to maintain the side panels in their positions. The dot and dash lines in Fig. 4 indicate the extended positions of the benches.
The table may be collapsed by first pulling it out on the horizontal tracks and then lifting the outer end slightly so that the inner end may move slightly down along the tracks 42 and 42. This causes the roller 4I to be moved inwards against the action of the spring 38. Thus, the rack 38 moves inwards and turns the pinion 31 which retracts the bolt 33. The front table top section may now be moved about its hinges over the rear section I4, The dot and dash lines in Fig. 3 clearly show the folded position. The leg 25 may be folded fiat against the underside of the section I4b, which when moved on the section I4a is on the top side. The table may then be moved into the compartment of the replace to a position shown by the full lines in Fig. 3. It is held in position by an adjustable hook 4II swivelly mounted upon the back wall oi the fireplace.
When the table is extended from the closed position, shown in Fig. 3, to the open position, the bolt 30 will be extended to engage the keeper 34 automatically, the bolt being released from its retracted position. It will be Withdrawn from this latter position when the roller 4I engages the narrow portion of the track 42.
It is to be understood that the shape, design and proportions of the fireplace and the dinette may be changed as desired. Also that any number and type of supporting legs may be used for benches I3. Instead of using one bolt 30, two or more may be provided.
While we have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of our invention, it is to be understood that we do not limit ourselves to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:-
