Description
C. M. HYATT. Clamp.
No. 211,020. l Patented Dec. 17,1878.
UNTTED STATES CHARLES M. HYATT, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNCR TO THE EMBOSSING COMPANY.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLAMPS.
Specification forming part 'of Letters Pat-cnt No. 231,02), dated December l?, 1878; application filed November 27, 1878.
To ali whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. HYATT, of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New Yorlr, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clamps, which improvement .is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in Which- Figure l .represents a plan View of a clamp containing my invention. Fig. 2 is a crossseetion thereof. Fig. 3 shows a series of blocks in position for their reception in the clamp.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to obtain a clamp which is adapted to receive and hold a series or group of alphabetblocks, dominees, checkers, and the like during the process of their manufacture, such as the printing or enameling thereof, and which shall admit of the introduction and removal of such articles with greater facility and dispatch than ordinary clamps.
It consists in the combination, With a baseplate, of a series of edge-gages, which are arranged at suitable angles to each other, and one of which is pivoted at or near its one end, and oi' a device for locking the pivoted gage, whereby I obtain a cla-mp adapted to open and shut with facility.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a base-plate, and B C D are a series of edgegages, composing a clamp of the nature ot' my invention.
Between the gages B C D, I have represented a group of alphabet-blocks, (Er, which are thus brought to a position to he simultaneously printed, or treated in any other desired manner.
In practice I fasten together the group of blocks to be treated, previous to placing the same in the clamp, by an india-rubber or other suitable band, as shown, the bandbein g marked c, so that no time is lost in setting up the blocks in the clamp.
To accommodate the group of blocks Gr, the gages B C D are arranged at right angles to each other. The gages B and C are stationary; but they are made adjustable by means ot' slots t, formed therein, and setscrews c,
While the gage D is hung on a pivot, d, projecting from the base-plate at or near its one end. With this pivoted gage D, I combine a locking device, consisting, in the present eX- ample ot' my invention, of a spring, E. This spring E is so arranged as to force the pivoted gage D inward, and its form may be varied. I make the gage D in two parts, and connect one part thereof to the other by means of slotted plates c and set-screwsf, so that t-he same, like the gages B C, is adjustable; ibut, in lieu of this arrangement, the pivot d of the gage D may be combined with a slot to render said gage adjustable.
It will be seen that when the pivoted gage Dis allowed to follow the action ot' the spring E, any group of articles placed between the same and the gages B C are automatically and firmly held in position, While by simply moving the gage D outward against the action of the spring the articles can be introduced or removed, so that the least possible time is consumed in adjust-in g the articles in the clamp. i
In lieu of the spring E, I can use any other equivalent mechanical device, such as aWeight, lever, or cam; and when my clamp is combined with a printing-press or other machine, the pivotcd gage can be connected With the Working parts in such a manner that said gage is automatically opened and shut at the proper times. To make this connection I use a link, F, or other suitable means.
YV hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a clamp, thecombination ot' a base-plate, a series of edge-gages, which are arranged at suitable angles to each other, and one of which is pivoted at or near its one end, and ot a device for locking the pivoted gage, all constructed and operating substantially as herein described. f
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto set my hand and seal this 25th day of November, 1878.
CHARLES M. HYATT.
