CLIVIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 788,545, dated May 2, 1905.
Application iled May 3], 1904. Serial No. 210,492.
To @ZZ whom, it 11m/y concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK MARGGRAFF, a citizen ot' the United States of America, and a resident ot' Augusta, county of Bracken, State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps, ot' which thc following is a specification.
The object of my invention is a clamp for holding a number oi' sheets oi' varying thickness iirmly together.
Referring' to the accompanying drawings, in which like parts are indicated by similar reference-letters wherever they occur in the various views, Figure l is a plan view of a clamp embodying my invention in its closed position. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same in its closed position. Fig. ,4 is a similar view in the open position. Fig. 5 is a detail plan of the straight jaw of the clamp, the dotted lines showing one of the lugs before it is bent up to its iinal position. Fig. 6 is an inverted detail plan view of the curved jaw of the clamp. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the locking-lever.v
Referring to the parts, the clamp consists oi a straight jaw A and a curved jaw B, which are hinged together at one end a. Straight jaw A has upon its sides lugs c a2, which are Yformed integral with it and bent up from its sides, as shown in Fig. These lugs a a2 support a retaining-bar C, below which plate A has a central perforation a3. Curved jaw B has a central slot b, across which a fulcrumpin L' is secured. Upon pin a locking-lever D is journaled. Locking-lever D has a downwardly-projecting arm d, with a cam-shaped face rl and an outwardly-projecting actuatingarm d2. Face al has a transverse rib cl3.
When the jaws A and B are brought toward each other, the arm CZ engages the retaininghar C. The cam is made oi' a shape such that the swinging downward ot' the arm Z2 draws the jaws more tightly together. Rib d3, en-
5 gaging bar C, locks the jaws in position. Should the sheet or sheets to be engaged by the jaws be of ordinary thickness, the jaw B retains its normal shape, when the lockinglever D is thrown to its closed position and clamps the sheet firmly between the jaws. Should the sheets be ot' considerable thickness, when the locking-lever D is thrown to its closed position the curve in the jaw B flattens somewhat to accommodate the increased thickness. Thus my clamp will grasp sheets oi' varying thickness and hold them iirmly, the cam upon the arm Z serving to prevent the locking-leve1"s slipping after it has once been thrown to its closed position until the arm l2 is raised. The contacting face oi' the jaw A is preferably scored, so as to roughen it and enhance the gripping action ot' the jaws upon the sheets.
There are various uses to which my invention may be put. It may be used for holding sheets of paper together, and it may be used for holding carriage-curtains. For instance, by securing` the clamp upon the backstay of a carriage-top the clamp would form a most convenient means for holding the back curtain in place, since it would hold the curtain firmly even though it did not have a large bite thereon, and thus its gripping would not be destroyed by a shrinking in thc curtain.
lVhat I claim is- I. In a clamp the combination oitl two jaws hinged together at one end, a retaining-bar secured upon one of the jaws, a locking-lever journaled upon the other jaw consisting of two arms, one armbeing oam-shapedto engage under the retaining-bar and the other being an actuating-arm for throwing the lever to clamp the jaws together.
2. In a clamp the combination of two jaws, one straight, the other curved, hinged together at one end and adapted to meet at the` other end, a retaining-bar attached to the straight jaw, and a locking-lever fulcrumed upon the curved jaw, and having two arms, one an operating-arm and the other a cam-shaped arm t0 engage under the retaining-bar to lock the jaws together. A
3. In a clamp the combination of a straight and a curved jaw hinged together at one end and adapted to Contact each other at the opposite end, both jaws being centrally slotted, a retainer-bar secured upon the straight jaw over its slot, a fulcrum-pin secured upon the curved jaw over its slot, a locking-lever journaled upon the pin and having a earn-shaped arm to engage under the retaining-bar and an actuating-arm.
