No. 211,017. Patented Dec. 17, 1 878.

CHARLES WV. HUGHES AND THOMAS E. DYER, OF FOSTORIA, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT'EN COMBINED COUNTER AND HEEL=PROTECTOR.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 2] 1,017, dated December 17, 1878; application filed October 8, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES W. HUGHES and Tnoams E. DYER, of Fostoria, in the county or Seneca, and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-0ounter and Shoe-Heel Protector; and do hereby declare that the followin g is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement, with a shoe or boot heel, of a brace which not only supports the counter of the boot or shoe, but at the same time prevents the wear of one side of the heel.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side View, Fig. 2 a bottom view, and Fig. 3 a perspective, of the brace detached from the shoe.
In the figures, E represents the heel of a shoe, and D the counter of same. A represents the brace. This brace is made of suitable metal, and of suitable shape to conform to the side of the heel, and is firmly secured to the heel, as seen.
At the upper end of the brace are two arms, B B, which project backward and forward upon and against the counter, to give it support point to point of said arms.
Upon the lower end of the brace A is a plate, 0, which is at right angles to it, and which lies beneath the heel, being firmly secured to it by means of screws or nails. This plate is made of suitable form, and when confined to and under the heel prevents it from wearing as fast as it would otherwise.
It will be seen that the plate 0 extends backward, not only covering a good portion of the side of the heel, but at the same time acting as a brace, auxiliary to the brace A, to assist in keeping it rigidly in position. This arrangement of a brace not only keeps the counter stiff, but at the same time prevents the wear upon the heel.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The within-described counter and heel-protector for boots and shoes, formed of a single piece of metal, and consisting of the perforated plate 0, which is curved and covers the wearing portion of the heel, and is secured thereto by screws or nails, the shank A, secured to the outer surface of the heel, and the shank-protector B B, all as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 26th day of September, 1878.
CHARLES W. HUGHES.
