WILLIAM r. MAURER, or Haai/tour, iNniANA.
SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 343,047, dated June 1, 1886.
Application'fled March 9, 1886. Serial No. 194,524. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may con/cern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. MAURER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of I-Iarmony, in the county of Clay and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part cf this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved shoe. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the saine, and Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the sole-leather portion of the shoe.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
My invention has relation to shoes adapted for rough usage; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of a shoe or boot having a lower sole-leather portion attached to the sole, to which portion again the upper is secured, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying` drawings, the letter A indicates the sole, which may be of any desired thickness and provided with a heel, B, or made without a heel, and which may be either double or single, as occasion and the usage to which the shoe is to be subjected may require. The portion C of sole-leather is secured between the sole and the inner sole, D, at its lower edges in the same manner as the vamp is secured in a common shoe or boot,
and this portion, which is shaped into its de-r sired shape while the sole-leather is wet, extends around the entire lower portion of the shoe or boot, and is formed with a seam, E, at one side, the 'entire portion being made in one piece. The portion F may be shaped as a gaiter, as shown, and is stitched at its lower edge to the inner side of the upper edge of the sole-leather vamp.
It will thus be seen that the entire lower portion ofthe shoe will be made of sole-leather,and consequently be capable of withstanding ron gh usage, while the upper portion of the shoe or boot may be made of leather of any degree of softness, so that the shoe will be comfortable for the foot and at the same time hard and strong.
Vhen` the upper is made in the shape of a `gaiter, the entire upper is made out of one piece ot' leather, which is connected by means of a seam, G, at one side, preferably at the side opposite to the side at which the seam of the sole-leather vamp is, and it will be seen that neither in the vamp nor in the upper will be found a seam at the lback of the shoe, which, in
Aa shoe of the stiffness which the soleleatlier vamp causes would be uncomfortable, and would hurt the heel and back part of the foot of the wearer.
rIhis shoe or boot will be useful for miners,
A persons walkin g upon rough or stony surfaces,
and for persons working with strong acids or alkalies, the sole-leather forming the entire lower portion of the boot being of a sufficient thickness and strength to prevent its being cut through by stones or ragged rocks, or to be penetrated by any acid or alkali which might be dropped upon the shoe, or which otherwise might come in temporary contact with the shoe.
If desired, only the vamp proper may be made of the sole-leather, and the back portion may be made in the usual manner of leather where the forward part of the shoe is subjected to the worst usage, and numerous minor changes may be made in the construction of the shoe or boot without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination of the soles of a shoe, a vamp made in one piece of sole-leather secured between said soles, and having its ends joined in a seam at one side oi' the shoe, and anv upper made in one piece having a slit in the instep, and having its ends joined in a seam at the opposite side of the shoe to that upon which is the seam in the vamp, the said upper being secured by its lower edge to the upper edge of the vamp.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VILLIAM F. MAURER.
Witnesses:
SUTTON STRONG, FRANKLIN D. STEWART.
